Max Verstappen left offended by fellow drivers as F1 star's record questioned
Max Verstappen fumed after the veracity of his exploits at the Nurburgring on his week off were called into question. The Dutchman raised eyebrows before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix by heading to Germany for some GT testing at the famous circuit.
Verstappen went undercover to drive at the Nurburgring, adopting the pseudonym 'Franz Hermann' for the sake of the test. He drove a Ferrari 296 GT3 and, it soon emerged, set a new lap record for that type of racing machine – though that claim was soon called into question.
Some experienced GT racers also got involved in what turned out to be quite the argument on social media. And that included Maro Engel, who races in the German DTM series and claimed that Verstappen had not been running with a proper Nurburgring Endurance Series set-up on the car.
The implication was that Verstappen had been able to go faster because of a set-up which made the car more performant than it would be in an proper race in that series. But Verstappen was quick to snap back at that claim.
"False. Don't spread things when you don't know how the car was set up and our engine settings. Why would I join a NLS track day with the wrong BOP?" he wrote on X. And Engel responded: "Seems like paddock chat was incorrect then."
He could have just ignored all the noise, but it seems to have annoyed the Red Bull driver. Regarding Engel's social media accusation, he told journalists at Imola: "That was a stupid comment. I went there to have fun and just drive my laps. I [was] just there to learn.
"Then the record comes out of course, and it's as if other drivers feel attacked. I'm just enjoying myself, and then you get that kind of unnecessary comment, which I find totally pointless.
"I know him [Engel]. So yeah, then I think, 'It's probably better not to say anything'. But I happened to come across it in my feed. Normally you don't see that, but I've met him a few times in Monaco. I have a lot of respect for everyone in the GT3 world, and then I think, 'This is just unnecessary'."

And he insisted that he had indeed been using the correct set-up on the car. "Of course. Otherwise it would be a bit silly to drive there," he said.
Verstappen went on to confirm that he had gone quicker than the official Nurburgring Endurance Series lap record at the famous circuit of seven minutes and 49.578 seconds, set in 2022 by Christian Krognes. But, because it was a test, that record still stands as the four-time F1 champion's laps were unofficial.
Verstappen had never driver on the Nordschleife in person before that test, but it was not an unfamiliar track for the Dutchman regardless. "I've done thousands of laps there [in the simulator]," he said. "When I got there in real life, it was really just a matter of finding out the grip level. I already knew everything else."

Fresh Liverpool transfer stance on Marc Guehi as Arne Slot eyes cut-price deal
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Marc Guehi but do not agree with Crystal Palace's price tag as the defender's contract enters its final 12 months Liverpool remain keen on landing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace but do not agree with their £40million valuation given he is available for nothing come next summer. They also want to avoid a lengthy saga should they pursue the centre-half. The Eagles defender has established himself as an England regular and is one of the leading lights at Selhurst Park, captaining them on the FA Cup only months ago. However Guehi has no desire to sign a new deal in south London and could leave for free in 12 months. It would represent a huge loss for Palace, who turned down the chance to land £65m from Newcastle when they chased Guehi last summer. If Liverpool are to move for the defender then it will revolve solely around the price being quoted. The Reds have already spent £200m this summer but are keen on making additions to their defence. Guehi has a lot of positives going for him but those on Merseyside have little interest in negotiations that drag on for weeks, reports the BBC. As it stands Liverpool believe Palace's asking price of £40m is too high given his situation and the prospect of signing him for free later down the line. Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea have all registered varying degrees of interest in Guehi since the end of the season. The defender was once on the Blues' books and the west Londoners have made a habit of letting players go only to re-sign them later in their careers. Liverpool themselves have several moving pieces when it comes to their defensive picture. They have allowed Jarell Quansah to leave for Bayer Leverkusen this summer and, as things stand, Ibrahima Konate is out of contract next summer and has shown little interest in signing a new deal. He is thought to be keen on a move to Real Madrid. Joe Gomez is again dealing with an injury issue, which leaves Virgil van Dijk as the team's defensive leader. However landing Guehi to partner the Dutchman could prove a huge coup for the Premier League champions. Palace face the risk of losing several of their major names this summer. 12 months ago they saw Michael Olise leave and Eberechi Eze is now heavily being courted by Arsenal with the player himself keen on making the move across London. Man Utd offered new Ollie Watkins transfer hope after performing U-turn on move
Manchestter United appear to have moved on from Ollie Watkins, at least for the time being, but there is fresh hope that the England striker could yet become available Manchester United have turned their attentions away from Ollie Watkins and towards Benjamin Sesko. However, fresh developments could yet allow them to come back in for the Aston Villa star. Villa's asking price on Watkins appeared to be a sticking point, with United seeming reluctant to part with the best part of £60m. Unai Emery's side were reluctant to sell, given their lack of back-ups in attack, but they are now eyeing up alternatives. Curiously, Villa's main attacking target is Sesko's team-mate Lois Openda. According to reports in Belgium, the Premier League side have been exploring a move for Lois Openda for a number of months, with the interest said to be mutual. Belgian international striker Openda has scored 41 goals across two seasons as a Leipzig player, but could be available after the German club missed out on European qualification. However, it is being reported that Villa will need to sell Watkins before they can bolster their attack.. Villa have had a quiet window so far, with Dutch starlet Zepiqueno Redmond their only attacking recruit. They weren't able to seal permanent moves for loanees Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, leaving them with fewer options in attack. Sesko and Watkins are both valued by their respective clubs at around £60million. However, United are more prepared to spend that kind of money for a player more than seven years younger than the England star. Slovenia international Sesko, who turned 22 in May, has 39 goals across two Leipzig seasons. He was also a target for Arsenal before they swooped for Viktor Gyokeres, while Newcastle could yet pounce if they lose Alexander Isak. While United wait to add to their attacking ranks, their current crop had a chance to show what they can do in front of goal. Ruben Amorim's side are in the United States for the Premier League Summer Series, where they made it two wins from two with a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth. United scored twice in each half, with Rasmus Hojlund among those to find the net. They play Everton over the weekend before rounding off their pre-season campaign with a home friendly against Fiorentina on August 9. Danish striker Hojlund is one player who could yet be sold to raise funds in a summer which has already seen United splash out more than £100m to bring Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to Old Trafford. 'I'm really happy with Rasmus. But I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market," United's head coach said.

'I left Tottenham for Arsenal because I'm ambitious – I dreamed of playing at the top'
Sol Campbell remains among the most hated figures in Tottenham Hotspur history after opting to leave the club on a highly controversial free transfer for fierce rivals Arsenal Sol Campbell admitted it was his ambition to play at the highest level of football that drove his desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Arsenal. The ex- England defender came through the academy of Spurs before spending nine years in the first team, where he established himself as one of the world's premier centre backs. However, with just one domestic honour to his name and yet to grace the UEFA Champions League, Campbell sought more for his career and opted to rejected Spurs' contract offer that would have made him the highest-paid player in their history. Out of contract in the summer of 2001, some fans believed that Campbell would have moved abroad and were left shocked to their core when realising he would stay in north London to now represent their most bitter rivals in the Gunners. Nicknamed 'Judas' by much of the Spurs fanbase, who continue to lambast their former academy graduate for what they believe to be the ultimate betrayal in sports, Campbell was clear in his reasoning for signing for Arsenal. At the time of his decision, he said: "I'm ambitious, I dream about playing football at the top level and this is why I'm here." The Gunners had competed in the Champions League for the last three seasons before Campbell's arrival and had already won the Premier League during Arsene Wenger's reign. Campbell's unveiling as an Arsenal player came as a surprise to the footballing world, including the media, as just two journalists were present for the announcement at the club's London Colney training ground. Expecting the introduction of ex-Ipswich Town goalkeeper Richard Wright, who was signed for £2million, the reporters were instead treated to the shock of Campbell's presence upon walking into the press room. His arrival was an instant success for the red side of north London, recapturing the Premier League title with a seven-point margin over second-placed Liverpool. In addition to a first league title, the centre back won his first FA Cup, with Arsenal beating Chelsea 2-0 in the final. Campbell's arrival at Highbury wasn't all smooth sailing as he was subjected to boos from his new team-mates in training in order to prepare him for the hostile reaction he'd receive upon his return to Tottenham. Wenger previously spoke to German magazine 11 Freunde about the tactics from his former players as he said: "They did that, and they also made jokes about it. The situation was really stressful for Sol and he told me afterwards how severe it became. 'He couldn't go to certain places for dinner or walk freely in London because of the anger of the Tottenham fans. In hindsight, I'm not sure if I would sign him again bearing in mind the difficulties he faced. "I thought he was capable of facing the adversity. For me, it was easy because everybody was conscious that I had signed a great player. But for him, it was more complicated." The two rivals are set to go head-to-head against each other on Thursday in a pre-season friendly. Being hosted at Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong, it'll be the first north London derby taking place outside the UK, with kick-off at 12:30pm UK time.
