Shocking Lions incident that had fans calling for Maro Itoje to be banned
Maro Itoje will take the reins as British and Irish Lions captain for Saturday's Test opener against Australia, marking the start of their summer campaign. He's expected to lead by example as the squad eyes an early series advantage.
Having stumbled against Argentina in Dublin prior to their trip, the Lions have since gone unbeaten in five matches on Australian ground. But things will heat up in Brisbane, where Itoje faces scrutiny both for his conduct and his impact.
That's partly due to past controversy. During the 2021 South Africa tour, the Saracens lock drew heavy criticism after a high-profile clash with Damian de Allende, with the 30-year-old becoming the focus of outrage from Springboks fans and South African media outlets for his in-game antics.
He was seen pressing his knee onto De Allende's upper body - specifically around the chest, shoulder, and neck - during the second Test in Cape Town. That match ended 27-9 in South Africa's favour, tying the series before the decider.
De Allende retaliated from the ground by dragging Itoje down and then shoving him in the head. Itoje responded by complaining to referee Ben O'Keeffe. Although no action was taken against either, the online backlash was severe.
One fan posted to X: "[Maro Itoje] should be banned after his knee on De Allende's neck! That's dangerous." Another user said: "Itoje also deserved red for this. This is intentional."
"Shocked he wasn't thrown out of the game," another comment read. One supporter wrote: "Unacceptable! Maro had a terrible game overall, actually. Complaining and moaning."
Itoje, though, seems to have turned the page. His recent form suggests he's grown into the leadership role, becoming a consistent presence throughout the preparatory fixtures. He was on the scoresheet in the Lions' 52-12 rout of the Queensland Reds, showcasing endurance and focus throughout the match.
Australia, led by ex-Ireland coach Joe Schmidt, will likely make Itoje a priority target as they seek to disrupt the Lions' plans at Lang Park.
Itoje is set to line up in the second row alongside Joe McCarthy and is one of four Englishmen in the starting side, joined by Ellis Genge, Tom Curry, and Tommy Freeman.
But more than anything, Itoje must avoid the sort of confrontations that invite disciplinary trouble. With the captain's armband now on his arm, fans will hope he's left the drama behind and embraced the responsibility.

Owen Farrell named on bench for Lions' second Test against Wallabies
Sione Tuipulotu has been left out of the British & Irish Lions side to face Australia on Saturday with Bundee Aki coming in at inside centre and Owen Farrell named on the bench. Andy Farrell has named nine Ireland players with Andrew Porter replacing Ellis Genge at loosehead while in the other change to the starting XV, Ollie Chessum replaces the injured Joe McCarthy as the Lions look to wrap up the series in Melbourne. It would have been 10 Irishmen with Garry Ringrose initially selected, only to withdraw after training on Thursday morning. Owen Farrell is named among the replacements after captaining the side to a 24-19 victory over the First Nations & Pasifika XV on Tuesday while there are also bench spots for Jac Morgan, Blair Kinghorn and James Ryan. Assuming he comes on to the field, Farrell will win his first Test cap since England's 2023 World Cup bronze medal-match victory over Argentina. He has six previous Lions Test caps to his name and is set to make his 22nd appearance for the touring side. Tuipulotu's omission is due to a tight hamstring and is a blow after he impressed in the first Test victory in Brisbane last week and it will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Scotland centre given he grew up in Melbourne. Huw Jones also shone and gets a reprieve after Ringrose's setback from a concussion earlier in the tour. Genge can consider himself hard done by to drop to the bench but the replacements struggled in Brisbane and he will be tasked with bringing intensity on Saturday. Porter's selection makes for an all Ireland and Leinster front-row along with Dan Sheehan and Tadhg Furlong. Chessum joins England teammate and captain Maro Itoje in the second row while the back-row – so impressive last week – is unchanged with Tadhg Beirne, Tom Curry and Jack Conan . Aki's promotion is the only change to the backline with Jamison Gibson-Park, Finn Russell, Jones, James Lowe, Tommy Freeman and Hugo Keenan continuing. Farrell's pick of nine Ireland players is one short of the 10 Welshmen selected for the 2013 decider against Australia when Brian O'Driscoll was famously dropped, but the head coach is nonetheless leaning heavily on players from his national team. Seven of the starting XV are from Leinster. On the bench, as well as Genge, Ronan Kelleher and Will Stuart provide front-row cover while Ryan and Morgan are in line for their first Lions caps. Ben Earl drops out as a result while Alex Mitchell continues his record of being named in every matchday squad to date. With Owen Farrell and Kinghorn selected, Marcus Smith drops out of the 23. Wallabies Valetini, Skelton, Porecki return from injury for second Lions test
MELBOURNE, July 24 (Reuters) - Australia coach Joe Schmidt has added a considerable heft to his pack with the inclusion of Rob Valetini, Will Skelton and Dave Porecki in his starting line-up for Saturday's second test against the British & Irish Lions. The Wallabies were outmuscled by the tourists at the collision in the first hour of last week's loss in the series opener in Brisbane and the return of flanker Valetini and lock Skelton from calf injuries should help in that area. Hooker Porecki missed the first-test defeat because of a concussion sustained in Australia's warm-up match against Fiji and his recall in place of Matt Faessler should help in the lineout, where the Wallabies struggled at Lang Park. Schmidt resisted making any further changes to his starting side and 22-year-old Tom Lynagh will lead an unchanged backline from flyhalf at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in his second test start. Flanker Nick Champion de Crespigny and Faessler have been dropped to allow the return of Valetini and Porecki, while lock Jeremy Williams remains in the matchday squad among the replacements after making way for Skelton. Schmidt has opted for a 6-2 split in favour of the forwards on the bench with the powerful Langi Gleeson also returning from injury to join flanker Carlo Tizzano as back-up for the loose forwards. "The squad has recovered well after a very physical first test and the week's preparation here in Melbourne has allowed us a bit more time together," Schmidt said in a news release. "We took some confidence from the second half last week, but we know we'll need to improve further against a Lions team that will bring plenty of fire to the contest on Saturday night." The third and final test takes place at Sydney's Stadium Australia on Aug. 2. Team: 15–Tom Wright, 14–Max Jorgensen, 13–Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, 12–Len Ikitau, 11–Harry Potter, 10–Tom Lynagh, 9–Jake Gordon, 8–Harry Wilson, 7–Fraser McReight, 6–Rob Valetini, 5–Will Skelton, 4–Nick Frost, 3–Allan Alaalatoa, 2–David Porecki, 1–James Slipper Replacements: 16–Billy Pollard, 17–Angus Bell, 18–Tom Robertson, 19–Jeremy Williams, 20–Langi Gleeson, 21–Carlo Tizzano, 22–Tate McDermott, 23–Ben Donaldson

Owen Farrell named on bench for Lions' second Test against Wallabies
Four days after captaining the Lions in the midweek victory over the First Nations and Pasifika, Farrell will make his first Test appearance since the 2023 World Cup as fly-half and inside centre cover. Head coach Andy Farrell has made three changes to the starting line-up that won the first Test 27-19, including the removal of Sione Tuipulotu, who is jettisoned from the matchday 23 completely with Bundee Aki taking his place in the number 12 jersey. Joe McCarthy has lost his battle with the foot condition plantar fasciitis so Ollie Chessum is drafted into the second row and there is an adjustment at loosehead prop where Andrew Porter is preferred ahead of Ellis Genge.
