How Singapore businesses are scrambling to stay open amid the new Covid-19 wave
SINGAPORE, May 15 — A recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Singapore has prompted some businesses to reactivate contingency plans to deal with staff shortages and safeguard customer health.
From Apr 27 to May 3, Singapore recorded an estimated 14,200 Covid-19 cases, up from 11,100 the week before, according to health authorities.
According to a Channel News Asia report, restaurants and transport firms have responded by hiring part-time staff, intensifying cleaning measures, and providing protective equipment to their employees.
At House of Seafood in Punggol, two chefs tested positive for Covid-19, creating a staffing crunch ahead of the busy Mother's Day weekend.
To cope, the restaurant sought skilled part-time chefs with similar experience to maintain the quality of its popular crab dishes, according to supervisor Feng Ying.
However, Feng said these chefs came at a premium.
'We need to raise the salary, by about 50 per cent more than usual, in order to hire them,' she was quoted as saying.
The restaurant also ramped up cleaning protocols, engaging professional sanitisation services for deep cleaning of kitchen areas and common surfaces.
Disinfection efforts at the eatery have doubled to four times daily, focusing on high-touch areas like door handles and toilets.
Transport firm SG Bus Charter Travel & Tours has also intensified cleaning while continuing to equip its drivers with N95 masks, which have been standard since the pandemic began.
Its director, Dinesh Dhillon, said the company has flexible work arrangements and daily driver schedules that can be reshuffled quickly in the event of Covid-related absences.
'When ... two or three or maybe four or five drivers come down ... we'll just reshuffle the whole schedule,' he said.

'I just received an email stating that my contract was not going to be renewed for the upcoming school year. They gave no reason whatsoever, no warning, and then literally within minutes my computer was deactivated,' said a former employee. Epic Charter Schools says a total of 357 employees were not renewed for the 2025-2026 school year: 83 Teachers 274 Administrative Staff 'My first initial reaction was just overwhelming sadness because I love the students and I love the people and I love the teachers, and then I was just mad, I was mad because these are people's lives at stake, like a warning would have been just courteous,' said a former employee. Norman Regional Health System lays off 10% of workforce The former employee says that they will not be getting severance pay, but will be paid through the end of June. 'To my understanding, it was a lot of us that were let go due to mismanaging funds,' said a former employee. Epic says the layoffs were necessary to ensure long-term suitability Starting in the 2025-26 school year, Epic will phase out its Learning Center model, no longer offering full-day in-person instruction Monday through Friday. Meal services for breakfast and lunch will also no longer be provided. News 4 reported on other layoffs and pay cuts in the fall due to a financial shortfall from lower-than-expected enrollment. 'It's just a tragic reality and sadly, it's something that I predicted four years ago now when we changed the school funding formula,' said Rep. Andy Fugate (D-Del City). In 2021, public schools relied on the most recent enrollment numbers to work up their budgets. Rep. Fugate says Epic used numbers that were inflated due to COVID-19. 'You know, the model itself, charter schools in general here in Oklahoma can be fly-by-night school learning environments. There's nothing that says they have to remain in business,' said Rep. The previous best was 41 in IPL 2024. Don't fall for this: Scam texts impersonate toll agencies, Colorado DMV
(COLORADO) — Text messages that are impersonating the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and official toll agencies are falsely claiming that people owe unpaid tolls or other traffic violations and are threatening that if payments are not received, the victim will face DMV-related fines or penalties. 'These scam texts often appear to come from official toll agencies and may reference the DMV to intimidate recipients into making immediate payments or providing personal information,' according to the Colorado DMV's website. 'The messages typically contain a link to a fake website that closely resembles an official toll payment site.' The DMV recommends the following actions if one of these texts is received: Do not click on any links. Do not share personal or financial information. Visit the official toll agency website to verify any legitimate billing or notices. If you don't have a toll account or haven't recently used a toll road, it's almost certainly a scam. Anyone who receives one of these fraudulent texts is encouraged to report it to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center or the Federal Trade Commission.
