PM Anwar hosts gala dinner in honour of ASEAN, GCC and China leaders
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hosted a gala dinner tonight in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, celebrating unity, diplomacy and the region's rich cultural heritage.
Held at Exhibition Halls 4 and 5 of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the event saw the arrival of guests and delegates from 8 pm, followed by a video presentation highlighting Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025.
Among the leaders present were those from ASEAN countries, Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, and the Chinese Premier, Li Qiang.
A ceremonial welcome was rendered by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), with 60 musicians performing a 25-minute instrumental ensemble as dignitaries arrived in succession.
The procession of dignitaries entered the grand hall to the accompaniment of the MPO and a 60-member cultural troupe, symbolising the spirit of regional solidarity.
The evening opened with a stirring opening performance titled Ardi Bertuah by the PERMATA Seni Choir, featuring a medley of Malaysian traditional songs such as Ulik Mayang and Jambatan Tamparuli, performed in traditional songket costumes, followed by welcoming remarks from the master of ceremonies, Terrence Dass.
Dinner was served alongside a vibrant cultural showcase, beginning with a medley of ASEAN songs performed by Bob Yusof, Asmidar and Yasmin Aziz, with orchestral support.
Among the songs performed were Sabai Sabai and Oh Oh Timor, which captivated the audience and drew delighted reactions, including smiles and thumbs up from the Prime Ministers of Thailand Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Timor-Leste Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao.
Celebrated Malaysian icon Datuk Zainal Abidin then took the stage with his iconic hit Hijau, accompanied by a cultural troupe, followed by Ikhlas Tapi Jauh.
The artistic segment continued with Wira Perwara, a powerful cultural performance featuring MPO and the PERMATA Seni Tari troupe.
Award-winning singer Shila Amzah followed with Wau Bulan and Zheng Fu, accompanied by cultural groups Mind'ance and MPO.
In his welcoming speech, Anwar expressed his gratitude in multiple languages spoken across ASEAN, GCC and China, which was reflected in an LED display showcasing the word 'Thank You' in all corresponding languages.
A lively 'Colours of Borneo' dance performance followed, before songstress Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza mesmerised the audience with three numbers -- Ya Maulai, Kun Anta with the PERMATA Seni Choir, and the ASEAN Theme Song.
The evening concluded with a medley of Heal the World and Fight Song, performed by MPO and the PERMATA Seni Choir, as guests exited the hall waving ASEAN, GCC and China flags -- marking a symbolic end to a night of friendship, diplomacy and unity.

From anime and film scores to heritage music: How the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra is winning over new audiences
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — When orchestras worldwide returned to perform after the Covid-19 pandemic, their once-brimming concert halls found little enthusiasm – and revenue – with an ageing and dwindling audience. Instead of playing its swan song, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) bounced back stronger when it began moving away from its primarily classical roots starting from 2021, to embrace pop culture, local heritage, and film scores like those from the Harry Potter franchise and Avatar: The Last Airbender. And this month, the MPO will be playing the cult classic mafia film The Godfather. 'The MPO and DFP are living, evolving cultural forces, not just a place for classical music but a home for diverse artistic experiences. 'The MPO is a versatile orchestra; its artistry transcends all genres,' the MPO and Dewan Filharmonik Petronas' chief executive officer Hassina Begam Abdul Gani told Malay Mail. While sharing on how the orchestra curates its concert calendar, Hassina said the rebranding has certainly been rewarding and has struck a note with a broader and younger audience. MPO and DFP chief executive officer Hassina Begam Abdul Gani said planning for the concert season begins 18 to 24 months in advance. — Picture courtesy of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra In the first half of 2025, she said the MPO sold out several big concerts: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets In Concert (January 6-9) Vivaldi's Four Seasons (March 8 & 9) Symphony of Memories: Nostalgic Hong Kong Classics (March 22) La La Land In Concert (May 4 and May 9-12) The second half of the year looks promising too; as of May, the sold-out concerts are: John Williams vs Hans Zimmer (August 21-24) Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba In Concert (September 20) How does MPO curate its concert calendar? Behind the scenes, the planning starts months ahead. Hassina explained that curating each season takes 18 to 24 months – factoring in performer bookings, tour schedules, logistics, and marketing. Each year is built around a unifying theme. For 2025, it's 'Where Every Beat Tells A Story', a nod to music's role in narrating human experiences. The calendar is then segmented into sub-themes to give each quarter its own character and rhythm. January kicks off with celebratory concerts to ring in the new year, followed by romantic serenades to mark Valentine's Day in February. Some seasons include Hari Raya Aidilfitri collaborations with local artistes in the second quarter. By mid-year when National Day and Malaysia Day roll around, the MPO shifts gears to highlight the nation's rich cultural heritage. From joget to Chopin This July 5, Simfoni Budaya II brings a symphonic spin to traditional joget, asli, and zapin songs. On August 9, Mistik Pura Masyrik dives into East Coast folklore, featuring legends like Cik Siti Wan Kembang and Ulik Mayang, brought to life by Artistana Istana Budaya and Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia. On September 6, the Temple of Fine Arts takes the stage with Ragas and Mudras, a showcase of Indian classical music and dance. Special classical concerts also take place in August to commemorate the orchestra's founding anniversary, which made its debut concert on August 17, 1998. This year, a two-part Chopin Festival will take place on August 16 and October 11, celebrating the works of Polish maestro Frédéric Chopin. Led by music director Junichi Hirokami, MPO will perform some of Chopin's renowned concertos with pianists Melody Quah and Martin Garcia Garcia. Pop culture meets philharmonic While the classics remain, it's the blockbuster soundtracks and pop culture tie-ins that have broadened the MPO's appeal. From August 21 to 24, the MPO will feature the iconic movie scores of two Oscar-winning composers at the John Williams vs Hans Zimmer concert. In September, the MPO will reimagine the pulse-pounding score of shonen anime hit series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. The year ends with a two-weekend Ballet Festival in December, pairing Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and The Nutcracker with Russia's Ballet Stars of Moscow. The year will also coincide with major musical anniversaries: the 270th birthday of Mozart, the 50th death anniversary of Benjamin Britten, and Steve Reich's 90th. Asked if fan-favourites like The Shang Sisters might headline a solo concert, Hassina was open-ended but optimistic. 'The MPO is open to all possibilities,' she said. The female jazz trio first performed with MPO and the WVC jazz band on April 26; and if current trends hold, they may not be the last to bridge the old with the new.

PAS eyes support of ‘critical' non-Malays disgruntled with govt
PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah said that although some PH supporters may have become disappointed with the party, they still disliked PAS over its perceived hardline Malay-Muslim stance. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Non-Malay voters disgruntled with the Pakatan Harapan-led government are the target of PAS, the largest opposition party in the Dewan Rakyat, as it prepares for the next general election. PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah acknowledged that Malay-Muslim parties have struggled to gain the support of non-Malays. However, it was apparent that voters who make up PH's core support have become increasingly critical of the government led by PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim, Amar said in an interview with Malaysiakini. 'The question now is how PAS can attract them to our side,' Amar was quoted as saying. The challenge was to find more convincing ways to win over the non-Malays ahead of the general election, which is due by February 2028. While some PH supporters may have become disappointed with the coalition's inability to execute various reforms it had promised, he admitted that they still disliked PAS due to its perceived hardline Malay-Muslim stance. 'This is what we're currently thinking about: how to win their support,' he said, adding that the Islamic party must preserve its clean image to retain young voters. Amar also took a swipe at its Perikatan Nasional partner Gerakan for making statements that have 'harmed and undermined' PAS. He urged Gerakan, the only multiracial party in the opposition coalition, to exercise control in making public statements, adding that PAS keeps an eye on such matters. 'I have to be honest here, because occasionally their remarks have backfired. They need to be careful and exercise control, because we're part of the same coalition. There must be give and take,' he said. Gerakan has 'much to improve' in attracting Chinese voters, who have been largely supporting DAP, and Gerakan's machinery and groundwork needed improvement, while the party's image itself needed to be rebuilt, he said. In November last year, Gerakan president Dominic Lau urged PAS to declare that it will not interfere with the rights of other communities, in order to ease the concerns of non-Malays and boost their support for PN. However, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man shot down the proposal, saying Gerakan should not blame the Islamic party for its failure to muster support from the Chinese community.
