Rain chances return late tonight
Starting off with a mostly clear sky and temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s. The wind is light and variable in direction. Cloud cover increases throughout today. By the afternoon, we'll have a partly to mostly cloudy sky and high temperatures climb into the middle 70s.
Late tonight, after midnight, rain rolls in from the south and persists on and off throughout the overnight hours Tuesday into Wednesday. Rain starts to fizzle out by the early evening hours Wednesday. Highest rainfall totals favor the southern counties.
There's a slim chance for a few isolated showers on Thursday, but most folks miss out. The weekend looks dry and pleasant. Highs climb into the upper 70s and lower 80s with plenty of sunshine.

Dare County issues State of Emergency ahead of Hurricane Erin

DARE COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A local state of emergency has been issued for all areas of Dare County due to Hurricane Erin. The decision comes after Dare County officials gathered this afternoon to receive a briefing from the National Weather Service, where they determined the system has the chance to produce life-threatening impacts on the Dare County Coastline. The release states that coastal flooding and ocean overwash are expected to begin as early as Tuesday, August 19, and continue through August 21. As a result, it is expected that multiple portions of N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island will be impassable for several days. Due to this, a mandatory evacuation of Zone A of the Hatteras Island has been issued. This zone includes all of Hatteras Island, including the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon. Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. All visitors in this zone must evacuate beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18 All residents in this zone must evacuate beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19 Officials recommend anyone effected make preparations now, including securing any property and collecting all personal belongings. Erin To Become A Cat 3+ North Of Puerto Rico This Weekend

Hurricane Erin continues its track to the west-northwest, according to the latest from the National Hurricane Center. The storm will strengthen to a major hurricane over the weekend as it passes north of Puerto Rico. Outer bands of the storm could bring heavy rain and tropical storm conditions to parts of the Northern Leeward, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as it moves north of the islands. The Bahamas, Bermuda and the East Coast of the United States should continue to monitor Hurricane Erin.
