Bahrain's main venue for business gatherings has hosted 124 events and drawn over 1.4 million visitors since it opened in late 2022, with new bookings making up nearly three-quarters of those activities.
The Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre has also seen a marked jump in use, with a 40 per cent rise in events in 2024 compared to the year before.
Tourism Minister, Her Excellency Fatima Al Sairafi, gave the update in a reply to Shura Council member Ali Al Shehabi, who had asked about how often the centre was being used, how it measured up to global standards, and what was being done to attract organisers.
In 2024, the venue's halls were in use for 26 per cent of the year.
This falls within the standard international range, according to the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. Since its launch, the centre has leased out more than 11 million square metres of space.
Among the events were two major gatherings being held for the first time in the Middle East.
The World Routes air travel forum and the UN's food tourism meet both drew thousands from over 100 countries.
The grounds have also been used for month-long public programmes such as the Bahrain Summer Games and Youth City.
Sixty-three events are on the books for 2025, with a planned usage rate of 31 per cent.
Early-year bookings included the 35th Autumn Fair, which drew over 200,000 people, the GCC Law and Arbitration Week, and the Bahrain International Garden Show. This year is expected to bring large trade shows.

From Gulf to global governance

Bahrain's entry to the United Nations Security Council has drawn praise from lawmakers, who described the vote as a clear nod to the Kingdom's conduct on the world stage. Shura Council Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh extended congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, following Bahrain's victory in yesterday's ballot at the UN General Assembly in New York. The Kingdom secured 186 votes, granting it a non-permanent seat for the 2026 to 2027 term. Al Saleh said the result showed the standing of HM the King's approach abroad, firm, measured, and grounded in mutual respect. He called it part of a broader story, one built over years, in which Bahrain had carved out a place as a steady hand in matters of peace and security. The Shura head spoke of the country's path as one shaped by values rather than volume. Bahrain, he said, had long championed peaceful co-existence, freedom of belief, and neighbourly exchange. These were not imported slogans but principles rooted in the constitution and set out clearly in the National Action Charter.

Shura reviews 30-day grace period for work permit renewals

A 30-day window to renew expat work permits and a cap on how many can be issued has been proposed during a review by the Shura Council's Services Committee. The committee, chaired by Dr Jameela Mohamed Redha Al Salman, met yesterday to discuss two amendments to Bahrain's 2006 law on labour market regulation. Present at the meeting were Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) Chief Executive Nibras Mohamed Talib and Labour Ministry Labour Relations Director Mai Hassan Al Asmi, along with senior staff from both bodies. One proposal seeks to give employers an extra month to renew work permits without facing penalties. As things stand, failure to renew on time means sanctions under Article 36 of the law. The second proposal calls for the national labour market plan to set a fixed upper limit on the number of permits granted by the LMRA. Current wording leaves that decision open-ended. Also on the table was a draft law to regulate artistic professions. The proposal, submitted by members Nancy Deena Elly Khedouri, Dalal Al Zayed, Khalid Al Maskati, Redha Faraj and Dr Mohamed Al Khozaie, would require anyone working in the arts to obtain a licence from the minister. The draft sets out a plan to issue professional cards to Bahraini artists, giving them access to certain benefits. It also includes the creation of a fund to support artistic work and provide backing for artists in the country. The draft further calls for stronger legal cover for those working in the arts, aiming to treat the field as a recognised line of work. It includes provisions for financial and social backing for Bahraini artists and refers to the arts as part of Bahrain's cultural identity.
