NARATHIWAT (Thailand), June 6 — A Malaysian senior citizen died after the vehicle he was driving skidded into a ditch in an accident along the Narathiwat-Pattani Highway near Yi Ngo District in Thailand's southern province yesterday afternoon.
Yi Ngo District Police Chief, Naravi Binwaearong, said his department received a report of the accident at 3pm local time.
'Police officers who arrived at the scene found that the victim had been taken to Yi Ngo Hospital and was confirmed dead a few hours after the accident,' he said when contacted yesterday (Thursday).
He said the victim, aged 68, was from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, and had been driving alone at the time of the incident.
Preliminary investigations found that the accident was caused by a burst tyre on the four-wheel drive vehicle the victim was driving.
'The police have informed the Malaysian Consulate of the incident, and the victim's body remains at Yi Ngo Hospital,' he added. — Bernama

After Gerik tragedy, Yayasan Terengganu mulls ties with reputable bus operators to ferry students

KUALA TERENGGANU, June 11 — Yayasan Terengganu (YT) is considering to forge agreements with reputable bus operators to ferry Persatuan Mahasiswa Anak Terengganu (Permata) members back to their hometowns during long holidays or festive periods. YT chief assistant director (higher education) Wan Mohamad Nazir Wan Jusoh said the move was to ensure the safety of students following the death of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in a bus crash along Jalan Raya Timur- Barat (JRTB) in Gerik, Perak. He added that the majority of students involved in the crash were Permata executive committee members and normal members from Besut and Setiu districts. 'We will discuss the suggestion and other improvements further at the higher management levels and Permata's leadership ,' he said when contacted yesterday, and denied that the bus involved in the crash was prepared by Permata, pointing out that it was rented by the students themselves. He also noted that while the foundation had its own buses, they were not enough to handle the number of Permata members, which number around 10,000, throughout the country. The buses were currently used for Imtiaz schools that had packed schedules and programmes throughout the year. 'We have 21 associations under Permata in the country, 19 of which are public universities and two private universities,' he added. — Bernama

AGC rejects Najib's bid to drop SRC RM27m money laundering charges, court to decide on DNAA by June 20

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has rejected Datuk Seri Najib Razak's representation to drop his three money laundering charges involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds amounting to RM27 million. The decision was related to the High Court during today's case management on the status of the representation submitted to the AGC in 2023. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul said the prosecution was therefore prepared to proceed with the trial, but also asked for the court to fix longer trial dates to allow for the compilation of voluminous trial documents. Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah then suggested to court to grant his client a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in the interest of justice as trial has been indefinitely postponed since 2019. A DNAA means an accused person can face trial for the same charges in the future if the prosecution decides to reinstate them. 'I am suggesting for the court to grant a DNAA. This will remove pressure from both sides,' he said, adding that the prosecution can decide further when everything is in order to proceed with trial at a later date. On the matter of DNAA, Ashrof said he would leave it to the court's discretion as his explicit instructions were to proceed with the trial and therefore cannot agree to the defence's request. 'We cannot agree to the DNAA as we have indicated we are prepared to proceed with trial, however, on issue of documentations we need time,' he said. High Court Judge K. Muniandy later fixed June 20 to decide on the defence's application for DNAA. On February 3, 2019, the former prime minister claimed trial to the three charges of money laundering by accepting illegal proceeds amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan on July 8, 2014. He was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM5 million or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction. The former Pekan MP is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. On September 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon, following which on January 29 the Pardons Board halved his jail term from 12 to six years and reduced the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Police: Bus driver in crash that killed 15 UPSI students had 18 summonses, 13 for speeding

PETALING JAYA, June 10 — The driver of the bus involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students yesterday had a record of 18 traffic summonses, according to Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri. According to Sinar Harian, Yusri said 13 of the summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for failing to have a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident. He added that a special task force involving police, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the road transport department, the Land Public Transport Agency, and other relevant bodies has been formed to investigate the crash. 'We will complete the investigation papers as soon as possible. Our investigation will be thorough and cover all aspects, including the driver's past offences, background, activities and career history,' he was quoted as saying. The crash occurred early Monday morning when the bus, travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to UPSI's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with the rear of a Perodua Alza, veered off the road, and overturned along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding. Sinar Harian reported that the task force's findings will address potential safety lapses and preventive measures.
