Trump and his defence boss have created a ‘cult of personality'
Today, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth gave a speech at the Pentagon that came across as more of a condescending lecture, slamming the press for their coverage of the attacks on nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan.
Through gritted teeth, Hegseth told reporters: 'The assessment is that we significantly damaged the nuclear program, setting it back by years, I repeat, years. What the United States did was historic.'
Furrowing his brow, the defence chief added: 'But because you – and I mean specifically you, the press – because you cheer against Trump so hard… You want him not to be successful so badly that you have to cheer against the efficacy of these strikes.
'You hope maybe they weren't effective, the way the Trump administration has represented them isn't true, so you make half-truths, spin leaked information into every way you can to try to cause doubt and manipulate the public mind.'
Hegseth's remarks were one of the most brutal attacks on the press from a senior official in Trump's second term so far.
But the most interesting part isn't the words, an expert has said — it's the focus of their wrath.
Ian Garner, historian and propaganda analyst at the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw, told Metro it's telling to see Trump and Hegseth go on the attack, not against Iran, but against the media.
'This has been coming back since his first presidential run. To me, it's extremely authoritarian,' he said.
'The authoritarian approach is to say that the real enemy, the much more frightening enemy, is the enemy within.'
For Hegseth and Trump, that 'enemy' is the press, which they claim has undermined a military mission simply by reporting on evidence coming out of the Pentagon.
Media outlets that reported on new intelligence from the US suggesting the attacks in Iran did not destroy the nuclear facilities were publicly humiliated by Trump.
For the President and his Defence Secretary, who hailed them as 'one of the most successful military strikes in history', this was a betrayal.

But Mr Garner points out: 'To suggest the media is somehow undermining a military mission by reporting on evidence, can't possibly affect the reality of that mission.
'The way Trump and Hegseth have interacted with the public and media tells us is something much more important: that this conflict is much more about spectacle and performance and giving domestic audiences a show of strength from the White House and the Pentagon than achieving any particular strategic target.'
The heart of this performance? Trump himself. A growing number of Americans are seeing him as the true commander-in-chief, Mr Garner argues.

The media spectable unfolded after the US unleashed more than a dozen bombs on t wo Iranian nuclear facilities, the Fordow Fuel Enrichment plant and the Natanz Enrichment Complex.
But the revelation that the US may not have fully eliminated the centrifuges of the sites and highly enriched uranium is quickly becoming an issue for Trump and his 'cult of personality' – as well as the media reporting on it.
But it's not Trump's first fight with the media. He became famous in his first campaign for slamming what he called the 'fake news media' for spreading lies.
In 2017, it was found that one in four of Trump's tweets at the time contained fake news.

Trump demands Lisa Cook, first black woman Fed Reserve member, ‘resign, now!!!' and accuses her of mortgage fraud
President Donald Trump is escalating his crusade against the Federal Reserve's independence by demanding the resignation of Lisa Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the central bank's board of governors, citing unsubstantiated allegations of mortgage fraud. Writing on Truth Social, Trump said Cook, a former Michigan State University professor who has served on the board since 2022, 'must resign, now!!!' and shared a Bloomberg News article about calls for the Department of Justice to investigate Cook's mortgage application history by Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Administration and of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Pulte, a 37-year-old board whose grandfather founded a large residential home construction form and who gained prominence on social media by giving away free money to people on Twitter, sent a letter last week to Attorney General Pam Bondi and DOJ official Ed Martin alleging that Cook 'falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud under the criminal statute.' He alleges that Cook improperly listed an Ann Arbor, Michigan property as a primary residence before also purchasing another property in Georgia. His letter to Bondi states that Cook 'appears to have acquired mortgages that do not meet certain lending requirements and could have received favorable loan terms under fraudulent circumstances' and suggested that she be investigated for violating four separate criminal statutes. Separately on social media, Pulte said the allegations, which have not resulted in any charges as of yet, give Trump 'cause to fire' the Democratic appointee. Since being sworn into office, Pulte has used his position to dig into mortgage applications from prominent Democrats and has made similar allegations against New York State Attorney General Letitia James and California Senator Adam Schiff. But he denied any improper political motivations during an interview on CNBC and claimed he had 'received a tip' about the matter instead of targeting Cook on his own. 'We refer people every day criminally for mortgage fraud, and no one is above the law. And in this case, it happens to be a fed governor. And I have an obligation to do something about it,' he said. 'You know, the Fed has written all about the economic harm of mortgage fraud, in particular occupancy fraud. And here she is allegedly committing mortgage fraud. So I think it's a big issue. I don't think it's going away. I think she will have to resign or I think she will be fired.' Although he has not publicized any similar allegations against any Republicans, he claimed that his agency would 'look at any allegation of mortgage fraud' and said party affiliation was irrelevant to him. 'We do not care whether you're a Republican or a Democrat. We do not care whether you're wealthy. We don't care whether you're a prosecutor. We don't care whether you're a Fed governor. If you commit mortgage fraud and you present an existential threat to the federal home loan banks ... we are going to prosecute it,' he said. Pulte's move to accuse Cook of mortgage fraud expands his — and the president's — effort to hound members of the Federal Reserve's board in retaliation for not acting to artificially juice the economy by lowering interest rates. Trump has made no secret of his distaste for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whom he nominated to lead the Federal Reserve in 2017, primarily because of Powell's refusal to lower interest rates, particularly in light of Trump's decision to levy tariffs. Powell has said that the central bank needs time to see what effects tariffs will have on inflation and employment before making a determination on interest rates. This has prompted Trump to call Powell a 'stupid person' and refer to him by the nickname 'Too Late.' The Supreme Court recently signaled that Trump can't fire Fed board members simply because the president disagrees with him on interest rates. But legally he could do so 'for cause,' such as misconduct or dereliction of duty.

Minister unveils UK crackdown on Kyrgyz finance to ‘keep pressure on' Putin
Stephen Doughty unveiled sanctions against eight organisations and individuals on Wednesday, and said the move would help 'keep up the pressure on' Russian president Vladimir Putin, who he alleged was exploiting 'dodgy crypto networks'. Kyrgyzstan's Capital Bank, formally known as the OJSC Capital Bank of Central Asia, was among the sanctioned organisations, along with its director Kantemir Chalbayev. Leonid Shumakov, who is understood to be the director of the rouble-linked A7A5 cryptocurrency token, also features on the list of sanctions targets, along with Grinex LLC, CJSC Tengricoin, Old Vector LLC, Zhanyshbek Uulu Nazarbek and Altair Holding SA. According to the Government, A7A5 has moved 9.3 billion US dollars (£6.9 billion) on a dedicated cryptocurrency exchange in just four months. 'If the Kremlin thinks they can hide their desperate attempts to soften the blow of our sanctions by laundering transactions through dodgy crypto networks – they are sorely mistaken,' Mr Doughty said. 'These sanctions keep up the pressure on Putin at a critical time and crack down on the illicit networks being used to funnel money into his war chest. 'Alongside our allies, we will continue to support the US-led drive to end this illegal war and secure a just and lasting peace.' The Kremlin has, in turn, sanctioned 21 individuals, including former Labour MP Denis MacShane, several journalists, and the Government-appointed independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, Jonathan Hall. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced in a statement that its move was 'in response to London's ongoing confrontational course, which includes efforts to demonise' Russia, tackling 'individuals who spread disinformation and unfounded accusations'. London and Moscow traded sanctions after a pair of summits on Friday and Monday, when US President Donald Trump said 'everyone is happy about the possibility of peace' in eastern Europe. Mr Trump, who hosted Mr Putin in Anchorage and then his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, claimed he had begun planning for trilateral talks between the three leaders. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who was in the White House with Mr Zelensky and several other European leaders, welcomed early-stage plans for three-way talks as a 'sensible next step'. Mr Trump also claimed the Putin administration would 'accept' multinational efforts to guarantee Ukraine's security, to ward off future Russian attacks. A YouGov poll of more than 6,300 adults found that 57% of Britons would support deploying British soldiers as peacekeepers in Ukraine, if a peace deal to end the war is reached, with 25% opposed.
