"The middle order wasn't able to capitalise to the tune they were supposed to": Anjum Chopra on Indian Women's 5-run defeat against England in 3rd T-20

India Gazette07-07-2025
Faridabad (Haryana) [India], July 7 (ANI): Former India women's cricketer Anjum Chopra reflected on the third T-20 between India Women's and England Women's; she felt the Indian middle order couldn't accelerate the scoring rate while chasing 172.
She emphasised that a backwards step immediately puts the team in a position where they have to catch up, leading to an increasing run rate if they fail to capitalise.
While speaking to ANI, Anjum Chopra said, 'The middle order needed to capitalize so when you're chasing 171-172, you can't take a step back the moment you take a step back, obviously you will have to play catch up in the next following overs and if you don't do that the run rate increases. I thought that the middle order wasn't able to capitalise or play to the tune that they were supposed to be playing.'
England found its way out of a hole and kept the five-match series alive by narrowly escaping with a slender five-run victory against India women's team in the third T20I, in a contest where simple dropped catches took centre stage at The Oval.
With designated captain Nat Sciver-Brunt out of the contest due to an injury, stand-in captain Tammy Beaumont inspired England to a comeback win to bring the series to 1-2.
Despite the defeat in the previous fixture, Chopra praised Smriti Mandhana's performance in the ongoing T20 series against England. She said Mandhana's century in the first T-20 was a treat to watch and felt she's vastly experienced, that's what's expected out of her.
'I thought Smriti's knock in the first T-20 was brilliant. It was a treat to watch the kind of shots she played. She made batting look so simple, but again, she's vastly experienced, and that is what's expected out of her,' she added.
Mandhana made history last week as she became the first-ever women's cricketer from India to slam centuries in all formats of international cricket.
Mandhana reached this feat during her side's first T20I of five matches against England at Nottingham on Saturday. During the game, the left-handed opener smashed 112 in just 62 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes, at a strike rate of 180.65.
Followed by her century, Mandhana carried her form in the third T-20 as well, and she was the top scorer for India in the match. She slammed 56 off 49 balls, including ten fours. India will next clash with England on Wednesday, July 9, at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. (ANI)

Dream11, MPL, other fantasy apps face uncertain future as Online Gaming Bill clears Parliament

The Rajya Sabha on Thursday cleared the Online Gaming Bill, 2025, outlawing money-based fantasy apps, poker, rummy and other games, dealing a heavy blow to India's $3.8 billion gaming industry. Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 prohibits 'harmful' real-money gaming services, along with related advertisements and financial transactions, with the government citing risks of psychological distress and financial loss. (Pic for representational purpose only) The bill prohibits 'harmful' real-money gaming services, along with related advertisements and financial transactions, with the government citing risks of psychological distress and financial loss. While it is not immediately clear which apps will be directly impacted, the move poses a threat to India's gaming industry, one that has attracted global investors and nurtured homegrown fantasy platforms such as Dream11, Games24x7 and Mobile Premier League, Bloomberg reported. The Online Gaming Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday without a debate as Opposition members raised slogans demanding a discussion on the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission. An online money game is one in which a user deposits money in the expectation of winning monetary and other enrichment. Endorsements by top cricketers and film stars have incited interest in real money gaming apps such as fantasy sports betting games offered by Dream11, Games24X7, and Mobile Premier League. There is a realisation that online gaming has become a major problem for society, PTI quoted a senior official as saying, adding that the government has decided to keep the welfare of people above revenue loss from its ban. Indian apps which are expected to be impacted by Online Gaming Bill 2025 Dream11: Dream11 commands a valuation of $8 billion. In fantasy cricket games on Dream11, users create their teams by paying as little as ₹8 (10 US cents), with a total prize pool of 1.2 million Indian rupees ($14,000). The app becomes more popular during the Indian Premier League season. Mobile Premier League: MPL is valued at $2.5 billion, PitchBook data shows. Other apps likely to be impacted My11Circle Howzat SG11 Fantasy WinZO Games24x7 (parent of My11Circle and RummyCircle) Junglee Games (covers Rummy & Poker) PokerBaazi GamesKraft (also known as RummyCulture) Nazara Technologies (investor in PokerBaazi, though its direct RMG revenue is minimal) Bloomberg News reported that Dream11 and Mobile Premier League declined a request to comment. Why did government bring the bill? Union minister of electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw told PTI that online money gaming has become a serious social and public health issue, with a proven significant negative impact on society. "Our endeavour is to promote eSports and social gaming, online social gaming, and we would like India to become a game-making hub. For that, a lot of efforts are already being made," he said. The minister said, so far, as digital technologies go, online gaming has emerged as a 'major secto' with three main segments. "Two segments, eSports and online social gaming, are good for society. We are promoting two out of three segments... These two will get legal recognition and they will be promoted. And this bill will create an authority which basically creates programs and schemes which promote eSports and online social gaming," Vaishnaw said. The third segment, online money gaming, is causing harm to the society, he said, adding that this has emerged as a major social and public health problem. There is a realisation that online gaming has become a major problem for society, PTI quoted a senior official as saying. The official added that the government has decided to keep the welfare of people above revenue loss from its ban. Is it punishable under the new law? Yes. With the nod from both houses of Parliament, offering or facilitating online money gaming will now be punishable by imprisonment of up to three years and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore. The bill also seeks to prohibit advertisements related to online money games and bars banks and financial institutions from transferring funds for any of such games. Advertising of money games can attract imprisonment up to two years and/or fine up to ₹50 lakh. Facilitating financial transactions related to money games can lead to imprisonment up to three years and/or fine up to ₹1 crore. Repeat offences attract enhanced penalties, including 3-5 years' imprisonment and fines up to ₹2 crore. Offences under key sections are sought to be made cognizable and non-bailable. Shreyas Iyer fully expected to be picked in India's Asia Cup squad; BCCI says 'no grudges...' after Agarkar backlash

Shreyas Iyer's non-selection for the 2025 Asia Cup has sparked significant outrage in the Indian cricket fraternity. Fans and experts have rallied behind the India star, questioning the logic behind his exclusion from the 15-man squad announced in Mumbai on Tuesday. The backlash even saw the BCCI being accused of favouritism, while chief selector Ajit Agarkar's explanation for the move was ridiculed as 'nonsensical.' Shreyas Iyer was not picked for the 2025 Asia Cup According to a report in the Times of India, Iyer was fully expecting a call from the selectors for the continental tournament, which gets underway on September 9. And why not? After piling up 604 runs in IPL 2025 at a strike rate of 175.1, followed by 345 runs for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at a strike rate of 188.5, Iyer had every reason to be realistic — only for fate to hand him disappointment. 'With regard to Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance,' Agarkar said when asked about Iyer at the presser. What further fuelled the outrage was that Iyer wasn't even named in the reserves, sparking theories that he may not be the selection committee's favourite. But a BCCI source, speaking to TOI, explained why the star batter wasn't in the standby list, while stressing that the selectors hold no grudges against him. 'A seasoned player like Shreyas can't be named in the reserves, please understand this! If you pick him, he plays in the XI. No one has any grudge against Iyer. He will get his chances and play many matches for India in all three formats. It's just that right now, he didn't fit in!' the source said. Iyer will now have to wait until October to see if he gets an opportunity to prove his worth for the T20 World Cup next year. India still have 10 T20Is to play after the Asia Cup — five in Australia and five at home against South Africa. He will also have the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, beginning November 26, to push his case further.

Asia Cup 2025: Sports Ministry takes BIG decision, India vs Pakistan match will…

India vs Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025 will take place in Dubai on September 14. (Photo: IANS) Arch-rivals India and Pakistan are set to face off in a massive match in Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai on September 14. It will be the first match between India and Pakistan cricket teams since India's 'Operation Sindoor' in retaliation to the Pahalgam terrorist attack earlier this year. The subsequent border tension had resulted in IPL 2025 as well as Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 being suspended for a week as well. The Indian Legends team refused to face Pakistan Legends team twice during the World Championships of Legends (WCL) 2025 tournament in UK last month in the aftermath of 'Operation Sindoor'. Now the question on everybody's mind is whether the crucial Asia Cup 2025 match between the two neighbours will go ahead or not. The Indian Sports Ministry came out with clear guideline on the issue on Thursday. The ministry said that India and Pakistan won't engage in any bilateral sporting ties but the cricket team will not be stopped from playing the multi-national Asia Cup 2025 next month. The ministry unveiled the new policy with regard to India's international engagements with emphasis on Pakistan. Sources said it is effective immediately. Add as a Preferred Source 'India's approach to sports events involving Pakistan reflects its overall policy in dealing with that country,' states the ministry policy. 'In so far as bilateral sports events in each other's country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India,' it added. Multi-lateral sporting events like World Cup, Asia Cup, etc will not be affected The sports ministry made it abundantly clear that the multilateral engagements will not be affected. 'We will not stop Indian cricket team from playing in Asia Cup as it is multilateral,' the ministry source said. 'But Pakistan will not be allowed on Indian soil for bilateral competitions. But we will not stop them from multilateral events as we will abide by Olympic Charter,' he added. Asked if Indian teams will be allowed to travel to Pakistan for any multi-lateral competitions, the source said, 'In that scenario, we will examine the case before deciding anything. 'Even in multi-lateral events, we can't leave our athletes in lurch. After all it's a country that has no hesitation in declaring that it's a dumpster and can hit the shining Mercedes that is India,' he added. Story Highlights India vs Pakistan cricket match in Asia Cup 2025 is set to take place in Dubai on September 14. Indian Sports Ministry on Thursday have come out with guidelines about sporting ties with neighbours Pakistan. There will be NO bilateral sporting ties between India and Pakistan. India and Pakistan team can play each other during multi-lateral events like World Cup, Asia Cup or Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Team India can face Pakistan possibly three times in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 tournament. Apart from the group fixture on September 14, India and Pakistan can face off in the Super 4 stage and if both teams qualify for the final, they will go up against each other in the final on September 28 as well.
