Hijrah A Turning Point For Change And Environmental Action
IPOH, June 26 (Bernama) -- All sectors of society must come together to address the escalating environmental crisis, and the beginning of the 1447 Hijrah should serve as a turning point for reflection and transformation — a moment to break away from the destructive depravity that continues to harm our planet.
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, said the world today is facing a series of environmental phenomena that have triggered widespread disasters, endangering both human well-being and the sustainability of our planet.
'The growing population, rising urban density, land clearing for new settlements, infrastructure development, urban expansion, and industrial activity have all directly impacted the natural environment.
'This Earth belongs to Allah. Let us honour and give thanks for the divine blessings we have received— not by defying His commands, but by ending all forms of harm and injustice toward the natural world. Only then can we hope to be spared from the calamities of environmental destruction and live in peace beneath the shelter of divine mercy and compassion,' he said when launching the state-level Maal Hijrah 1447H celebration here tonight.
Also present were the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim and the Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah.
Sultan Nazrin said that this year, Perak has chosen the theme 'Migration and Sustainability: Uniting the Muslim Community, Preserving the Earth' for the Maal Hijrah 1447 commemoration.
'It responds to the escalating distress of our ailing planet, marked by increasingly frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, erratic climate patterns, global warming, devastating wildfires, and widespread flooding, all of which continue to endanger lives and livelihoods,' he said.
His Royal Highness also said that Islam firmly prohibits all forms of pollution that harm the environment.
'A damaged ecosystem not only affects humankind but also disrupts the balance of the entire natural world, leading to disaster and danger.

Chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM), Professor Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, died today at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang. SINGAPORE: (Bernama) The passing of Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman, Prof Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, on Thursday (June 26) is not only a great loss to the ummah in Malaysia but also in Singapore. Muslim Converts' Association of Singapore (MCAS) President, Muhammad Imran Kuna, said Muhammad Nur was one of the pioneers who helped establish the association's education system and remained an important consultant to its work until his passing. Muhammad Imran said that during a visit to Muhammad Nur's home last month when he was unwell, the former senator's parting words were a reminder to ensure that the Muslim ummah in Malaysia and Singapore remain united and continue working together. "He wanted us to be the bridge, and for the ummah to strengthen and hold hands. Insha Allah, we will continue to uphold his niat (intention) and request,' he told Bernama. Muhammad Imran added that the IKIM chairman was instrumental in fostering collaboration between MCAS and other Muslim associations and organisations in Malaysia. "He was one of those who believed in what we wanted to do and had great ideas. He was a great inspiration and will always be remembered by us. "He was supposed to be one of the pillars supporting the first Asia-Pacific Cross-Culture Conference, which we are planning to hold in Singapore in November, and also a major Quran-related project we intended to launch in Singapore,' he said, noting that he had known Muhammad Nur for 15 years. In January, MCAS, which is also known as Darul Arqam, honoured Muhammad Nur with its highest accolade at the inaugural MCAS Academic Excellence Award ceremony, in recognition of his dedication, leadership, and transformative impact on the association. As the MCAS' Islamic education consultant from 2000 to 2009, Muhammad Nur played a key role in refining the Islamic education curriculum and da'wah methodologies. According to MCAS, he was central in developing specialised courses for new Muslim converts, covering subjects such as Aqidah, Fiqh, and Sirah. His efforts also extended to revising textbooks, conducting seminars, and organising workshops aimed at enhancing the educational experiences of new Muslims from diverse backgrounds. Prayers and Yasin recital mark start of Islamic year 1447H
KUALA LUMPUR: In the calm of dusk, the prayer hall of Masjid Negara echoed with heartfelt supplications as Muslims marked the arrival of 1 Muharram 1447 Hijrah, ushering in the new Islamic year. From as early as 6.30pm, more than 1,000 congregants, including tahfiz students and members of the public, gathered in the mosque's main prayer hall for the year-end and new year prayers in commemoration of the Hijrah. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee were also in attendance. At 7.25pm, the year-end prayer for 1446H was recited, followed by the Maghrib (sunset) call to prayer and the new year prayer, both led by Masjid Negara Grand Imam Ehsan Mohd Hosni. The programme continued after Maghrib with the recital of Surah Yasin – the 36th chapter of the Quran, often referred to as the 'heart of the Quran' – and a special prayer seeking blessings, protection, and well-being for the ummah (global Muslim community) in the year ahead. Following Isyak (night) prayers, a solat jenazah ghaib (funeral prayer in absentia) was performed for Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman Professor Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, who passed away at 11.27am today at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital, Serdang. Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Mohd Na'im urged Muslims to embrace the spirit of Hijrah not merely as a historical event, but as an ongoing journey of personal and communal transformation. He said 1st Muharram is a timely opportunity for introspection, to shed narrow thinking and negativity, and to strive towards building a more progressive and balanced society. "May we be granted the strength and resolve to continue spreading good, developing our potential and contributing to national progress," he said. The National Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration will take place tomorrow at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the King and Queen of Malaysia, are scheduled to grace the event. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and members of the cabinet are also expected to attend, along with more than 8,000 guests, including foreign dignitaries, as well as heads of government departments and agencies. Two Holy Mosques Authority Completes Replacement Of Holy Kaaba Kiswa
MAKKAH, June 26 (Bernama-SPA) -- The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has completed the annual replacement of the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba, continuing a tradition of care that spans over 100 years, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. A specialised team of 154 Saudi professionals from the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswa carried out the replacement process. The team was strategically assigned to various sides and the roof of the Kaaba based on their areas of expertise. The process began with dismantling the old Kiswa and installing the new one, which was then secured at the corners and across the roof of the Kaaba. bootstrap slideshow The new Kiswa weighs approximately 1,415 kilograms (kg) and stands 14 metres high. It consists of four separate panels along with the door curtain (sitara). Each panel was individually raised and aligned over the previous one, with the new Kiswa being gradually lowered as the old one was removed. This process was repeated for all four sides. Once in place, the decorative band (hizam) was aligned and stitched along a straight line around the Kaaba. Next, the corners were sewn vertically from top to bottom to ensure a seamless and secure finish. The sitara, which requires precision and considerable time, was then installed. A cut was made in the black silk fabric to fit the curtain—measuring 3.30 metres wide and 6.35 metres long—and three openings were created beneath the fabric to insert the curtain. It was then sewn into the Kiswa from both the inside and outside to ensure proper placement. The making of the Kiswa consumed approximately 825kg of raw silk, dyed black at the complex, 120kg of gold-plated silver thread, 60kg of pure silver thread, and 410kg of raw cotton. -- BERNAMA-SPA
