Sultan Nazrin Opens Larut Matang And Selama NRD Office
TAIPING, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, today officially opened the new Larut Matang and Selama District National Registration Department (NRD) office here. Also present were the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, and the Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah. Their Royal Highnesses were welcomed on arrival at the district office by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara also visited an exhibition on the evolution of the NRD, attended a luncheon, and toured the office building. In his speech, Shamsul Anuar said that the Larut Matang and Selama NRD is one of 20 offices operating in Perak. He said the office is a consolidation of the original office that operated in Wisma Persekutuan Taiping since 1986 and the Kamunting NRD branch office that had been in operation since 2004, with both offices undergoing a rationalisation process before being merged. According to Shamsul Anuar, the new office building, featuring attractive architecture and a corporate image, was built on a 40,468-square metre site to provide better facilities for the public. The RM10.5 million project was funded under the Fourth Rolling Plan of the 11th Malaysia Plan. 'According to a report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia in 2024, the population of the Larut Matang and Selama District has increased by 14 per cent to 313,400 compared to 269,600 in 2020. 'The construction project of the Larut Matang and Selama NRD office began on Sept 2, 2021, and was fully completed on April 22, 2024,' he said.

Sultan Nazrin presents excellence awards at Universiti Malaya
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah in his role as chancellor of Universiti Malaya (UM), presented awards to university staff and corporate partners at the 2024 UM Excellence Awards (ACUM) today. His Royal Highness arrived at the ceremony at 2.30 pm and was received by UM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman. Among the top honours presented were the UM Academic Icon Award, the High-Impact Contributor Award (Organisation) and the Special High-Impact Contributor Award (Individual). Additional categories included the Strategic Thinker Partner Award, Research Corporate Partner Award and the UM Medical Centre (PPUM) Corporate Partner Award. Earlier in his remarks, Noor Azuan said the annual awards serve to recognise individuals and organisations that have demonstrated exceptional commitment, integrity and contribution, helping to strengthen the university's standing. 'This year's 14th edition is especially significant as, for the first time, PPUM is among the recipients, reinforcing collaboration across departments,' he said. A total of 45 categories were awarded to 59 recipients, including individuals, research centres and corporate bodies. The university's highest accolade went to Professor Dr Stefanie Shamila Pillai of the English Language Department, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, for her work documenting and archiving Melaka Portuguese, an endangered language in Malaysia. Her project is part of the Endangered Languages Archive under the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme. Noor Azuan also highlighted UM's research achievements, noting the university secured RM163.37 million in grants last year, a 42 per cent increase from 2023, reflecting growing confidence in its research capabilities. In 2024, UM researchers produced 4,325 publications, up 15 per cent from 3,749 the year before.

UM honours endangered language expert with top academic award
KUALA LUMPUR: An endangered language research expert from Universiti Malaya (UM) was honoured with the UM Academic Figure Award during the 14th edition of the UM Excellence Awards (ACUM) on Tuesday (May 20). UM faculty of language and linguistics and department of English language Prof Dr Stefanie Shamila Pillai received the award for her contributions in the field of Malaysian English language varieties and the preservation of heritage languages. The award was presented to her by the UM Chancellor, The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah. Prof Stefanie is the first Malaysian to document and archive endangered languages in Malaysia, specifically the Malaccan Portuguese language, through the Endangered Languages Archive (Endangered Languages Documentation Programme). Her work not only advances academic publications and intellectual property but also fosters partnerships with local language communities through mobile dictionary development and knowledge-sharing initiatives. "Languages are not just about communication, it is also about communicating our culture, our practices, and how we think. "Malaysia has more than 130 languages, many people do not know this. I would say more than 70% of those languages are indigenous languages and the majority are under threat. "It is really important for us to keep using our languages and to document and to revitalise our languages," she said. UM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the awards were the university's highest form of recognition for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their respective fields. "The individual and collective excellence we celebrate today directly contributes to the enhancement of UM's international reputation," he said during his key address at the ACUM here. A total of 59 staff, individuals, research centres, and corporate bodies were honoured at the ACUM in 45 different categories. Other award categories include the Special Award for High-Impact Individual Contributor, Special Award for Strategic Thinker Partner, Excellent Researcher (Clinical Field), Top Citation Researcher (Science Field), Excellent Academic Administrator (Academic Department), Excellent Academic Staff, and more. The UM ACUM is an annual event held to honour outstanding UM staff and corporate bodies in recognition of their contributions to the university. Also present at the ceremony were UM pro-chancellor Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong and UM board chairman Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar.

FRU Truck Crash: Sultan Nazrin Visits Personnel Treated At HTI, Meets Family Members
TELUK INTAN, May 17 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, today visited the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who were injured in the crash here last Tuesday. His Royal Highness arrived at the Teluk Intan Hospital at 11 am and was greeted on arrival by State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim, State Health director Dr. Feisul Idzwan Mustapha, Teluk Intan Hospital director Dr Khairul Baharin Mohd Baharuddin, Perak deputy police chief DCP Zulkafli Sariaat and Perak Dewan Negara member Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. Sultan Nazrin visited Corporal Haslizal Mohd Ali, 44; Sergeant Mazlan Mat, 50; Corporal Mohd Izwan Ishak, 39; Sergeant Mohd Parih Ali, 44, who are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Muhammad Zulnaidi Muhammad Zulkifli, 34, who is in the normal ward.
