KUALA LUMPUR: An endangered language research expert from Universiti Malaya (UM) was honoured with the UM Academic Figure Award during the 14th edition of the UM Excellence Awards (ACUM) on Tuesday (May 20).
UM faculty of language and linguistics and department of English language Prof Dr Stefanie Shamila Pillai received the award for her contributions in the field of Malaysian English language varieties and the preservation of heritage languages.
The award was presented to her by the UM Chancellor, The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah.
Prof Stefanie is the first Malaysian to document and archive endangered languages in Malaysia, specifically the Malaccan Portuguese language, through the Endangered Languages Archive (Endangered Languages Documentation Programme).
Her work not only advances academic publications and intellectual property but also fosters partnerships with local language communities through mobile dictionary development and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
"Languages are not just about communication, it is also about communicating our culture, our practices, and how we think.
"Malaysia has more than 130 languages, many people do not know this. I would say more than 70% of those languages are indigenous languages and the majority are under threat.
"It is really important for us to keep using our languages and to document and to revitalise our languages," she said.
UM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the awards were the university's highest form of recognition for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their respective fields.
"The individual and collective excellence we celebrate today directly contributes to the enhancement of UM's international reputation," he said during his key address at the ACUM here.
A total of 59 staff, individuals, research centres, and corporate bodies were honoured at the ACUM in 45 different categories.
Other award categories include the Special Award for High-Impact Individual Contributor, Special Award for Strategic Thinker Partner, Excellent Researcher (Clinical Field), Top Citation Researcher (Science Field), Excellent Academic Administrator (Academic Department), Excellent Academic Staff, and more.
The UM ACUM is an annual event held to honour outstanding UM staff and corporate bodies in recognition of their contributions to the university.
Also present at the ceremony were UM pro-chancellor Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong and UM board chairman Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar.

Zahid's remarks on Tengku Zafrul show Umno ready to move on, says analyst

Analysts said Tengku Zafrul Aziz's departure will have little impact on Umno, likely because he is neither an MP nor a state assemblyman. PETALING JAYA : Recent remarks by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that the party is not losing sleep over Tengku Zafrul Aziz's departure signal Umno's readiness to move on from the former Supreme Council member, according to a political analyst. Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said Zahid's stance suggested that Umno, having weathered numerous political challenges, would not be shaken by the departure of any individual, even one as high-profile as the investment, trade and industry minister. 'This is a form of damage control to reinforce party loyalty over personal allegiance. Umno is making it clear that it no longer wants to be seen as dependent on technocrats or 'parachute candidates' who lack strong grassroots support, such as Tengku Zafrul in Kuala Selangor and later Kota Raja. 'It also shows that Umno is working to rebuild a grassroots-oriented identity rather than one rooted in political elites,' he told FMT. On June 2, Zahid said the party was not losing sleep over Tengku Zafrul's decision to quit and his intention to join PKR, adding that it was 'better he left if he couldn't remain loyal'. Tengku Zafrul failed to wrest the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat during the 15th general election and currently serves as Umno's Kota Raja division chief. Awang Azman said Zahid's statement might not fully appease party leaders or grassroots members, as some still viewed Tengku Zafrul as a political opportunist who 'rode on the party's goodwill' without earning it through merit or sacrifice. 'To prevent this episode from becoming a political liability in the next general election, Umno must act wisely and consolidate its internal strength, not just to move on but also to move forward,' he said. He warned that mishandling the issue could give the impression of internal instability, urging firm action to prevent political opportunism from taking root in the party. 'Zahid's leadership must be followed by a strategy to repair internal perceptions,' he said. Meanwhile, Ariff Aizuddin Azlan of Universiti Teknologi Mara said Zahid's stance suggested that Tengku Zafrul's exit had little practical impact on Umno, likely because he holds no elected office. 'The Umno president must demonstrate political maturity, as whatever he says will be taken as principle and guidance. 'The best way to curb the polemics is by opening constructive dialogue channels with all stakeholders and working together to find solutions,' he said.

Schwarzenegger surprises Vienna metro users with climate message

VIENNA: 'Here is your chief mobility officer Arnold Schwarzenegger talking to you' -- with this announcement the 'Terminator' star and former governor of California surprised Vienna public transport users on Tuesday by hailing them as 'climate action heroes'. The Austrian Hollywood star is in town for an annual conference he organises on climate change. 'Thank you for your commitment to a healthy planet,' he says in German in the announcement, broadcast every 30 minutes over the intercom system of all public transport, according to network operator Wiener Linien. He continues in English that 'you're all real climate action heroes, helping to unite in action and terminate pollution'. Schwarzenegger, 77, launched the summit in his native Austria eight years ago to highlight the challenges of climate change. In his opening speech on Tuesday, Schwarzenegger, who has been an outspoken critic of US President Donald Trump, held back criticism, while calling for 'action that makes their (people's) lives better'. 'I know that the people are sick and tired of the whining and the complaining and the doom and gloom. They want heroes... We have to win the people over,' he said. This year, former British prime minister Tony Blair is attending, as well as Austrian Prime Minister Christian Stocker and Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen. Around 2.4 million people use the city's public transport per day, according to Wiener Linien. The Austrian capital has around two million inhabitants.
