Japan to collaborate on Thailand's decarbonization efforts

NHK02-05-2025

Japan has agreed to collaborate with Thailand on a program to accelerate decarbonization in the Southeast Asian nation's industrial sector. They will work together to introduce energy-saving technology in factories.
The initiative is part of a framework called the Asia Zero Emission Community, or AZEC, set up by Japan. It is aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and economic growth in the region in partnership with Southeast Asian countries.
Government officials from both nations took part in a ceremony in Bangkok on Tuesday. Many Japanese automakers have production bases in Thailand.
Krittiya Petsee of Thailand's Energy Ministry said, "We are confident that this framework will be a key mechanism in driving a future of clean, secure and sustainable energy."
Sakuma Kazuko of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation said, "One advantage we bring is that there are many Japanese companies with excellent energy-saving technologies. There are also numerous support programs offered by public institutions like ours."
The two governments plan to hold a conference to connect Thai businesses with Japanese companies that have advanced energy-saving technologies. They will also coordinate to provide financial support for capital investment.

Japan OKs Gender Policy Guidelines Featuring Women Startup Aid

Yomiuri Shimbun file photo Prime Minister's Office Tokyo, June 10 (Jiji Press)—The Japanese government Tuesday approved its basic policy guidelines for women's empowerment, which includes supporting female entrepreneurs in regional areas of the country. The Intensive Policy for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women 2025, adopted at a joint meeting of government task forces, including the Headquarters for the Promotion of Gender Equality led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, stresses the urgency of efforts to make rural areas attractive to women. It contains support for female entrepreneurship through gender equality centers set up by local governments. The measure is aimed at encouraging women not to move out of regional areas. The government considers limited job opportunities for women in such areas as a factor behind the exodus, so it will expand consultation services and facilitate the establishment of connections with financial institutions to support startups by women. The government plans to establish in fiscal 2026 from next April an independent administrative agency to promote gender equality. The institution will support regional efforts through measures such as creating a database of experts to be dispatched to rural areas for lectures. Ishiba said at the meeting that the government will promote regional development that makes areas appealing to women, adding that it seeks to 'achieve a society in which everyone can live in their own styles.'

Trial to run political ads at Japan convenience stores canceled

KYODO NEWS - 10 minutes ago - 11:41 | All, Japan A planned trial run for displaying Japanese political advertisements on convenience stores' electronic signage screens has been canceled, an association promoting the digitalization of election campaigns said Monday. The first attempt to run such ads using a retailer's digital signage had been scheduled to start Tuesday and last for a week at FamilyMart Co. stores in Tokyo, in a bid to encourage young people to become more interested in politics amid low voter turnout. "The dates were not met as we carefully considered whether to participate in the trial," a company official said, adding the major convenience store chain will continue studying ways to contribute to improving voter turnout using digital signage. The trial was to have taken place before the start Friday of campaigning for the Tokyo metropolitan assembly election. Companies in Japan have so far refrained from utilizing their digital signage to run political advertisements. The initiative was announced on May 20 by the association for digital transformation of policy and public affairs. Members of the group include lawmakers, people in the advertising industry and legal experts. They held a press conference in the Diet attended by senior members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and opposition parties including the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Japan Innovation Party and the Democratic Party for the People. Japan's Akazawa Preparing to Visit U.S. from Fri.

News from Japan Jun 10, 2025 11:21 (JST) Tokyo, June 10 (Jiji Press)--Japanese chief tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is preparing to visit the United States from Friday for the sixth round of ministerial trade negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, it was learned Tuesday. Akazawa, the economic revitalization minister, is also expected to visit Canada, where the Japanese and U.S. leaders will hold a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit from Sunday. Talks between Japan and the United States are on the homestretch as the two sides are hoping to strike a deal at the bilateral summit on reviewing high U.S. tariffs. Akazawa is considering meeting with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other U.S. officials in what will be his fourth consecutive week of visits to the United States. He is seen returning to Japan on June 18, but this is subject to change depending on the state of negotiations. While Tokyo has been urging the U.S. side to scrap all tariff measures introduced against Japan by the Trump administration, including additional levies on automobiles, Washington has indicated that its focus of the ongoing negotiations is the additional portion of what it calls reciprocal tariffs.
