India must protect farmers, digital ecosystem in trade pact with US: GTRI

Any trade agreement with the US must not be politically driven or one-sided and India should protect its farmers, digital ecosystem, and policy space, economic think tank GTRI said on Friday. With India's chief trade negotiator in Washington DC and the clock ticking, the next few days could determine whether India and the US settle for a limited mini-deal or walk away from the negotiating table - at least for now, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. The two sides are looking at finalising an interim trade pact before July 9, as it marks the end of US President Donald Trump's 90-day suspension of the country-specific tariffs, originally announced on April 2. "The more likely outcome is a limited trade pact - styled after the US-UK mini trade deal announced on May 8," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said, adding, "any trade deal with the US must not be politically driven or one-sided, it must protect our farmers, our digital ecosystem, and our sovereign regulatory space." Under a mini or interim deal, according to the think tank, India is expected to cut tariffs on a wide range of industrial goods, including automobiles, a persistent demand from Washington. In agriculture, India may offer limited market access through tariff reductions and tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) on select US products such as ethanol, almonds, walnuts, apples, raisins, avocados, olive oil, spirits, and wine, it added. Beyond tariffs, the US is expected to press India for large-scale commercial purchases, including oil and LNG, civilian and military aircraft from Boeing, helicopters, and nuclear reactors, it said. "There may also be pressure on India to ease FDI restrictions in multi-brand retail, potentially benefiting firms like Amazon and Walmart and to liberalise rules on remanufactured goods, currently subject to stringent import norms," Srivastava said. Agricultural goods account for less than 5 per cent of US exports to India. SCO meet: Rajnath Singh's stance against terrorism and Pahalgam attack was countered by Pakistan and..., even THIS country didn't stand with India Not just at borders, but India also have to fight diplomatic battles with Pakistan and China. In the meeting of the Defence Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in China, both China and Pakistan tried to play with India. However, failed miserably. Surprisingly, a country which calls itself India's ally, also didn't stand up for New Delhi. India's stance against terrorism and Pakistan-backed terrorists was countered by Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif's question on Kulbhushan Jadhav, Jaffar Express and Balochistan. Pakistan calls Kulbhushan Jadhav an Indian spy, while India says that the Pakistani intelligence agency kidnapped him from Iran and forcibly kept him in captivity. When Rajnath Singh wanted to respond to this baseless claim of Pakistan, SCO Chairman China did not approve it. Not only this, the Pahalgam attack was not mentioned in the joint statement but Balochistan was named. Understanding this trick of China and Pakistan, Rajnath Singh did not sign the joint statement. What was Russia's stance? Russia who has always termed itself as New Delhi's friend also did not come ahead in India's rescue. During this time, Russia also signed the joint statement and did not support India. What did Pakistan minister say? Khawaja Asif said, 'I gave my speech at number five where I raised the issue of Jaffar Express attack and Kulbhushan Jadhav.' Meanwhile, the Indian Defense Minister requested China, the chairman of the conference, to speak again. China rejected this request of India and cited the alleged tradition. He said that except India, the defense ministers of all other countries signed the joint statement. Rajnath meets Chinese counterpart Rajnath Singh held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun and stressed on border management and to have a permanent solution of border demarcation by rejuvenating the established mechanism on the issue.
