Pressley: League Cup defeat can be catalyst for Dundee to move forward
The Dark Blues hosted the Championship side in their first competitive game of the campaign, in what was also Pressley's debut in the Dens Park dugout, on Saturday.
A first-half goal from Chris Mochrie was enough to secure a 1-0 win for the visitors.
However, Pressley insists that setbacks at this stage of the season can be used in their favour and give them a better idea of what they need to improve on.
The former Scotland international defender said: 'Although we didn't want it at the weekend, setbacks are often the catalyst to move things forward. Because then you have to refocus and identify the problems.
'So, I think that's healthy at times, I think in pre-season, although this was a cup competition, but pre-seasons without setbacks can be dangerous.
'It can now be a real catalyst for us to say, look, we've got so much work ahead of us, and I think that is really important.'
Dundee will travel to Alloa this weekend as they look to get their League Cup campaign back on track.
And while the head coach, who also played for Hearts, Dundee United, Celtic, and Rangers, admits they are 'nowhere near' the level they want to be currently, he has confidence in the process and is relishing the challenges ahead.
He continued: 'We believe in what we are doing, but we are realistic about what we are doing. It was our first real game of any note and the first time we were really stress-tested.
'Do I think we are anywhere near resembling where I want us to be? Absolutely not, no. Not even close.
'But I believe in the process and I do believe in what we are trying to do.
'I think we've got a group of players that have really bought into what we're trying to do. Along the way, there are going to be bumps. I was under no illusions, this was always going to be a difficult job, a challenging job.
'But I enjoy that challenge, and I also enjoy working with this group. I think we have a group of players that want to put things right here and who are really pushing to be better, and that's all I ask for.
'All the other things we have to accept and take care of, but as long as we believe in what we're doing, I think we will be fine.'

Gyokeres' goals must fire Gunners to silverware or Arteta will feel the heat
Mikel Arteta will be out of excuses if Arsenal fail to win significant silverware this season with the imminent arrival of Viktor Gyokeres from Portuguese side Sporting. The Gunners have been desperately crying out for a prolific forward to finish off their exciting attacking play as they chase their first Premier League title in more than two decades and it is imperative the Sweden international cuts it in the English top flight. A fee has been agreed to take the marksman to the Emirates and the deal is expected to be officially announced by the end of the week, pending a medical. Gyokeres looks a phenomenal player and was the top scorer in Europe last season with 39 goals in the Portuguese Liga, which is more than Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski, Lautaro Martinez, Kylian Mbappe and any other hot shot you care to mention netted in their domestic divisions. He also scored six times in the Champions League, celebrating a hat-trick in a 4-1 home win against Manchester City while also bagging goals against Lille, Sturm Graz and RB Leipzig and has yet to hit his prime as he has only just turned 27. The flip side of the coin is that the top-flight in Portugal isn't the strongest of competitions and Gyokeres failed to deliver at Brighton before being sold to Coventry where he excelled for the Sky Blues with goals galore, albeit in the Championship. There is also the concern that Gunners boss Arteta has misfired in previous deals for forwards who should net around 20 league goals a term with the £45m move for Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus and the £65m spent to bring in Kai Havertz from Chelsea failing to deliver the goods – and that's not factoring in Raheem Sterling's disastrous loan spell from the Blues. Arteta has harped on about believing in his process since taking charge of the Emirates hotseat from Arsène Wenger in December 2019 but the FA Cup success against Chelsea the following May is the only trophy he has won unless you count the 2020 and 2023 Community Shields as major reasons to celebrate. As well as Gyokeres, Arsenal have splashed out on wideman Noni Madueke, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard and back-up goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer and could also add another striker if they can shift a few squad players, making them strong contenders to win their first Premier League crown in 21 years at 5/2 with Coral, Ladbrokes and Betway. But tellingly, Bet Victor have opened a book on who will be the Gunners' next manager, with Simone Inzaghe the favourite at 4/1 and Diego Simone 10/1 as it increasingly looks like it's win or bust for Mikel. Scottie Scheffler's first public appearance since winning his first Claret Jug by winning the Open at Royal Portrush was at the premiere of Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler, in New York. The original is nowhere near as good as Caddyschack in our book, but in any case Scheff will be able to reflect at leisure on the merits of the two comedies as he misses the 3M Open on the outskirts of Minnesota. More Trending Tony Finau joined the world No.1 on the red carpet for the long-awaited film and is 30/1 to top the leaderboard on Sunday while Scottish Open winner Chris Gotterup, who stood tall when finishing a solo third near the Giant's Causeway, is 20/1 with the same firms. World youth champion Gian van Veen landed our bet to beat Danny Noppert by more than 2.5 legs at the Winter Gardens and he can beat James Wade at 3/4 with Ladbrokes and Coral in round three while Stephen Bunting is 10/11 with William Hill and bet365 to power past Jonny Clayton after his 12-10 success against Gary Anderson. Wrexham now want ex-Premier League striker who was at heart of 'don't care' rant
Wrexham are eyeing a seasoned former Premier League striker as manager Phil Parkinson ramps up his efforts in the summer transfer market ready for life in the Championship Wrexham have been tipped to make a swoop for a former Premier League striker as they look to mount a challenge in the Championship next season. Manager Phil Parkinson has made four signings so far this summer, including forward Ryan Hardie from Plymouth and goalkeeper Danny Ward from Leicester. He then brought in left-back Liberato Cacace from Empoli and midfielder George Thomason from Bolton, with ex-Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass also expected to join the Red Dragons this week. Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has pledged that the club will be "as aggressive as we can possibly be" in the transfer market after sealing promotion from League One in April. And Parkinson is now reported to have turned his attentions to Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore to bolster his options up front. The Wales international scored six goals in 30 appearances for the Blades in the second tier last season as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing to Sunderland in the play-off final. The 32-year-old still has two years left on his contract at Bramall Lane, but United are likely to be mindful of his diminishing resale value, according to The Sheffield Star. Wrexham would be getting a player with Premier League pedigree if they did choose to sign Moore following his stint at Bournemouth. However, despite his experience, he came in for criticism from Blades fans on several occasions last term. The club's then manager Chris Wilder spoke out in Moore's defence at the time and urged supporters to get behind his players. Speaking in September last year, Wilder said of the striker: "He's a team player. We've played six games and won four and drew two. He's led the line and worked tirelessly. I really don't care where the goals come from. Just as long as we win games of football. "Expectation levels, opinion split, or behind the players, please. Let's be together, let's not start on any of that nonsense. Social media is yet again rearing its head. Get behind the boy. He gives everything for the team. "Go and ask the players. Go and ask Callum O'Hare, go and ask Gus Hamer, go and ask Harry Souttar, go and ask Alan Knill, go and ask Jack Lester, what they think of Kieffer Moore. They'd all give the same answer." He again leapt to Moore's defence after United's 2-1 Championship play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May. The Welshman came in for scrutiny for his role in Sunderland's late-winner after he lost possession in the build-up to Tommy Watson's 95th minute goal with a stray pass. But Wilder, who left the Blades in June, said Moore's season should not be defined by his costly mistake. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "His performance and his contribution this season shouldn't be defined by that. None of us should be defined by that. We got 92 points and that gets you up most seasons. "I've always said that the highs are a lot higher and the lows are a lot lower [as a United fan]. It stung yesterday but I've got a beautiful family supporting me, I've got magic pals. "I've got really good people around me and I'm at a fabulous football club. I know there'll be a little bit of negativity, I get that and I think social media amps that up, a thousand per cent." Garner expects 'fireworks' in Bellotti showdown
European super-featherweight champion Ryan Garner has said that people can expect "fireworks" when he fights Reece Bellotti on two will meet for the British, Commonwealth and European super-featherweight titles at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC). Garner goes into the contest having recently picked up the European title with a victory over Salvador Jimenez in March."It's a massive opportunity for me," Garner told BBC Sport."I can be the first person from Southampton to be British, Commonwealth and European champion, so there's a chance to make history."I have massive respect for Reece but I think I'm better. That being said, this is my biggest challenge by a mile and I'll have to be at my best."It's going to be a very exciting fight and I think we will both bring fireworks, but I'm convinced that I will come away with the win."The 27-year-old is unbeaten as a professional and trains in Southampton with coach Wayne Batten, just a short distance away from the Saints' St Mary's Stadium. Wins against Liam Dillon and Archie Sharp earned him the opportunity to headline in the nearby town of Bournemouth in March at the same venue former WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith fought in three times. Garner and Bellotti's match-up has been tipped to be an exciting one because of their similar styles and attitudes in the men have been known to be in "tear-ups" and like to meet their opponent in the middle of the ring, inflicting a high and consistent output of have also both been recognised for having tremendous engines, not letting up or slowing down in previous 34-year-old Bellotti having five defeats on his record, since moving up in weight he has won six consecutive bouts, picking up the British and Commonwealth titles along the way. Bellotti comes into this contest off the back of an impressive victory over rival Michael Gomez Jr in Manchester, and he will be looking to silence the home supporters."I'm not taking this lightly at all," Garner added."I have to be switched on at all times because If I'm not then it could jeopardise everything that I have worked for, so I'll make sure that won't happen."I believe I'm getting better with every camp and I still think people are yet to see the best of me."I want to be known as the best fighter to have come out of Southampton. I believe I'm destined to fight at St Mary's Stadium and I'm not going to lose or let up on the way to that." Garner 'on verge' of world title fight - Warren Garner's promoter, Frank Warren, told BBC Sport: "If Ryan comes through this then he's on the verge of fighting for a world title in my opinion."Reece Bellotti is a good fighter, and he's going to come into Ryan's backyard - this will be a test for him."I think we're going to get a bit of a barn burner as far as the fight's concerned. I hope he comes through it and if he does we'll be looking to get a title fight on at Southampton's ground."Queensberry Promotions have put on stadium shows for some of their boxers before, with the most recent one a heavyweight showdown at Ipswich Town's Portman Road for Fabio Wardley. The BIC can hold about 4,000 seated people, and in March it was packed out for what was Garner's first major headline show. St Mary's Stadium holds about 32,000 seated spectators, plus more space on the pitch."It would be fantastic for Southampton and Ryan," Warren added."It would be a bit like what we did with Fabio in Ipswich and Josh Warrington in Leeds. There's nothing better than being in front of your own."Hopefully, we can get that world title for him down there. This is a tough test, but I believe he is capable of doing it."There'll be fireworks. It's going to be something special, and the pair of them are going to put on a fantastic night for the fans."
