North Korea's Kim oversees air drills

SEOUL : North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised drills by the nation's air force and underscored the need for a step-up in war preparation, state media said on Saturday.
Kim, who inspected anti-aircraft combat and air strike drills by North Korea's 1st Air Division on Thursday, called for 'all units in the entire military' to bring about 'a breakthrough in war preparation', KCNA reported.
Footage of the drills on North Korean state TV showed a MiG-29 jet launching a missile, which appeared to be a North Korean version of a Russia-developed mid- to long-range air-to-air missile, said Hong Min, North Korea analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification.
So far this month, Kim has overseen a missile test, inspected tank and munitions plants, made a rare visit to the Russian embassy in Pyongyang reaffirming the country's alliance with Russia, and supervised tank firing drills and special operations unit training.
North Korea also slammed the US state department for placing it on a list of countries that do not fully cooperate with US counterterrorism efforts. Pyongyang has been placed on the list every year since 1997, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said.
'The more the US provokes the DPRK with unnecessary and inefficient malicious acts, the further it will escalate the irreconcilable hostility between the DPRK and the US,' a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson said, using the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
'The DPRK will… take effective and proper measures to cope with the US hostile provocations in all spheres.'

OpenAI finds more Chinese groups using ChatGPT for malicious purposes

(AFP pic) SAN FRANCISCO : OpenAI is seeing an increasing number of Chinese groups using its artificial intelligence (AI) technology for covert operations, which the ChatGPT maker described in a report released today. While the scope and tactics employed by these groups have expanded, the operations detected were generally small in scale and targeted limited audiences, the San Francisco-based startup said. Since ChatGPT burst onto the scene in late 2022, there have been concerns about the potential consequences of generative AI technology, which can quickly and easily produce human-like text, imagery and audio. OpenAI regularly releases reports on malicious activity it detects on its platform, such as creating and debugging malware, or generating fake content for websites and social media platforms. In one example, OpenAI banned ChatGPT accounts that generated social media posts on political and geopolitical topics relevant to China, including criticism of a Taiwan-centric video game, false accusations against a Pakistani activist, and content related to the closure of USAID. Some content also criticised US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, generating X posts, such as 'Tariffs make imported goods outrageously expensive, yet the government splurges on overseas aid. Who's supposed to keep eating?'. In another example, China-linked threat actors used AI to support various phases of their cyber operations, including open-source research, script modification, troubleshooting system configurations, and development of tools for password brute forcing and social media automation. A third example OpenAI found was a China-origin influence operation that generated polarised social media content supporting both sides of divisive topics within US political discourse, including text and AI-generated profile images. China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on OpenAI's findings. OpenAI has cemented its position as one of the world's most valuable private companies after announcing a US$40 billion funding round valuing the company at US$300 billion.

Penang offers 5pc housing discount for Indian Muslims under new Madani campaign
GEORGE TOWN, June 5 — The Penang state government will offer a five per cent discount to Indian Muslims for the purchase of residential and commercial units under the newly introduced Madani Home Ownership Campaign (MOC), part of the Madani Inclusive Property Sector Catalyst Policy. State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the discount would be available throughout the campaign period, from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, to boost the sale of such properties. 'In addition, the Penang State Housing Board has introduced a special category, Rumah MutiaraKu Type D (RMKu D), with a ceiling price of RM400,000, targeted at households earning up to RM15,000 a month. 'This category is not allowed to be sold on the open market and cannot be used to fulfil affordable housing compliance requirements,' he said during a press conference at Komtar today, alongside State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye. Sundarajoo also announced a reduction in contribution rates for developers who do not physically build RMKu Type A or B units-from RM120,000 to RM100,000 in areas under the Penang Island City Council, and from RM120,000 to RM72,500 under the Seberang Perai City Council. To ensure cash flow and timely delivery of RMKu units, Sundarajoo said the previous 20 per cent open market release limit has been increased to 50 per cent. However, a release fee of 10 per cent of the selling price will be imposed. He added that upgrade packages for open market units will be capped at 50 per cent of the base price, and such packages will not be allowed for PN1 units, to maintain transparency in compliance with the RMKu policy. Other incentives under the policy include waivers on the sale or purchase charges of RMKu A and B quotas for developers who do not meet the price-controlled unit requirements, as well as exemptions from conducting a social impact assessment report. Sundarajoo said the policy, which was approved during the state planning committee meeting No. 5/2025 on June 3, is expected to have a positive impact by boosting home ownership rates, encouraging approval of strategic new projects and fostering a more inclusive, sustainable and competitive property development ecosystem. 'We are confident the implementation of the MOC policy will help raise home ownership levels among Penangites. The state government will continue to review, refine and gather feedback from industry players and the public to improve and update these guidelines,' he said. Previous initiatives introduced by the state include the Home Ownership Campaign (HOC) and the Penang State Property Sector Stimulus Policy 2020, which was extended four times, most recently as HOC 3.0 PLUS, which ended on Dec 31 last year. — Bernama

S'wak High Court dismisses applications by Petronas to postpone, stay Petros suit
National oil company Petronas called on the bank guarantee last October after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. PETALING JAYA : The Sarawak High Court has dismissed two applications filed by national oil company Petronas to postpone or stay the hearing of a suit brought by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd, the state's sole gas aggregator. Judicial commissioner Faridz Gohim Abdullah rejected the applications and confirmed that the case will be heard on June 11, the Dayak Daily reported. Faridz ruled that no special circumstances had been presented to justify a stay or adjournment. 'The hearing of the case should not be further delayed,' he was quoted as saying. Petros is suing to restrain Petronas from utilising funds of RM7.95 million received under a bank guarantee previously given by Petros in respect of the supply of gas. Petros contends that Petronas's demand for payment under the bank guarantee was 'unconscionable' or 'unlawful'. In April, Faridz dismissed an application by Petronas to suspend all legal proceedings on grounds that Petronas had failed to show the existence of any sufficiently exceptional or compelling grounds to stay the proceedings. In October last year, Petronas had called on the bank guarantee after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. Petros filed its suit against Petronas on Oct 15, 2024. The Sarawak state-owned oil company simultaneously sought an ex-parte interim injunction to restrain Petronas from pursuing the payment and receiving monies under the bank guarantee. However, Faridz ruled that Petros's injunction application had become 'redundant' as Maybank Islamic Bhd had already paid Petronas on the guarantee.
