A local author raised awareness of autism by reading to a first-grade class.
Allyson Minor visited Mrs. Leeds' first grade class at Belle Valley Elementary, reading her book 'The Bridge to Understanding.'

The children's book tells the story of a kangaroo understanding and embracing the differences of his new friend, an autistic wallaby.
For World Autism Awareness Day, all students in fifth grade through eighth grade received copies of the book.

Minor hoped this will give students a better understanding of their classmates on the spectrum.
'Our son was diagnosed ten years ago, and it's been an uphill battle. So, I think something like this, if I presented to his class when he was in kindergarten or first grade, I think that it would have paved maybe an easier road than he was given,' said Minor.
The author chose this school to read to because her kids went to Belle Valley as well.

Woman sentenced to 30 days in crash that killed Northmont senior, injured 5
Jun. 5—A Huber Heights woman was sentenced to 30 days for a crash two years ago that killed a Northmont High School senior and injured five people. Kelsey R. Minor, 20, was ordered to serve 30 days in the Montgomery County Jail and spend five years on probation, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office. She also must complete 500 hours of community service and had her driver's license suspended for three years. If she violates the terms of her probation, Minor will face nine months to three years in prison. Minor pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular homicide on May 8. Three counts of vehicular assault were dismissed. The prosecution sought the maximum sentence of three years and a lifetime suspension of her driver's license. In a sentencing memo Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Matthew DeRosa noted Minor was driving 74 miles per hour on Salem Avenue in a 35 miles per hour zone. A blood draw at the hospital also showed Minor had alcohol in her blood, according to the memo. "Her actions constitute the worst form of the offense," DeRosa wrote. "A sentence of 36 months and lifetime license suspension is the only way to protect the community from future criminal acts of defendant and deter her from further criminal action." The defense sought community control sanctions, noting she had no driving violations prior to and after the crash. Attorney Anthony A. Abboud wrote Minor's decisions that night have haunted her. "Kelsey struggled to grapple with the loss of her friend due to her actions that night," a sentencing memo read. "She has carried guilt, remorse and regret to this day. Kelsey understood her choices that night not only impacted her life, but her family's life, her friend's life and most importantly the family of Christopher Gwynne." Minor wrote a letter to Judge Steven K. Dankof saying there isn't a day she doesn't think of the crash. "I never would intentionally hurt anyone," she wrote. "Losing Chris has caused so much pain, depression, regret. I would never want anyone to go through the pain his family and mine have gone through. Around 1:30 a.m. on April 30, 2023, Minor was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt on Salem Avenue near Harvard Boulevard when she lost control, according to a crash report. The car began to spin and went off the right side of the road before hitting an RTA pole. Minor had five passengers in the car, including four people in the back row. Chris Gwynne, 19, of Englewood, was in the middle of the back seat, and died at the scene. Minor and the other four passengers were transported to Miami Valley Hospital with injuries.

Rogers City Council member arrested for DWI, speeding
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A former Rogers police chief and current city council member was arrested by the Washington County Sheriff's Office over the weekend for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Hayes Minor, 53, was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on Sunday night on charges of DWI, speeding and following too close. He was released around three hours later on a $1,105 bond. A preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said around 11 p.m. on June 11, a deputy was driving on Interstate 49 near mile marker 62 when they saw a car driving faster than the 55 mph speed limited posted. The driver, later identified as Minor was reportedly driving a Cadillac Escalade 72 mph. The deputy noted in the report that Minor was allegedly driving too close a white SUV ahead of him, being less than a car length behind it. A traffic stop was then initiated near mile marker 65. The deputy said in the report that a strong odor of intoxicants was coming from the vehicle. Minor told the deputy that he was leaving a baseball game and drank two beers over the course of the game. The deputy had Minor step out of the vehicle and he reportedly swayed. Minor's eyes were bloodshot and watery, according to the report. Minor took field sobriety tests and a breath sample test which indicated a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .109, above the legal limit. Minor currently serves on the Roger City Council, representing Ward 3, Position 2. He was selected in December 2024 after winning a runoff election against Alicia Hayes. His term is set to expire on Dec. 21, 2028, according to the city's website. He previously worked for the Rogers Police Department, where he first began service in 1994.
