Harry Potter star admits he might quit HBO reboot after first season

Daily Mirror07-07-2025
One of the new cast members from the upcoming anticipated HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter novels has admitted he does not know how long he will stay in the role
Bertie Carvel, who is set to play Cornelius Fudge in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television series, has revealed he may not remain part of the wizarding world beyond the first season.
In a chat with The Times, the acclaimed British actor admitted his future in the highly anticipated reboot could hinge on the fans' reaction to his portrayal of the Minister of Magic. He told his interviewers: "I don't know how it's going to fit into my life. I've read one script, which I loved, and I've read the books.

He continued: "I hadn't before I got the role. I think I saw one of the films, maybe two. As a boy if I had read these books I would have devoured them. So I am coming at it with a really open mind. Whether I come back [after the first series] probably depends on what the fans think. I mean, I'll be furious if it's not an amazing part."

Carvel's casting as Cornelius Fudge surprised Harry Potter fans, as Fudge does not appear in J.K. Rowling's books until Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
It seems that HBO might be considering introducing the character earlier on in the storyline, as part of a creative departure from the original plot.
Despite Carvel's suggestion that his time in the series might be brief, it seems unlikely that Cornelius Fudge would vanish altogether. The character grows increasingly central as the story progresses, and Deadline's earlier report indicated Carvel's role would be recurring.
Carvel admitted he might not have taken on such an intense commitment to a franchise earlier in his career, but noted that he is currently open to the possibility of staying longer if the role is well-received.
The Harry Potter reboot has been making headlines as HBO steadily assembles its cast for what is expected to be a faithful adaptation of Rowling's best-selling novels, with each book getting its own season.

In June, HBO announced a wave of new cast members joining the magical world. Katherine Parkinson will portray Molly Weasley, a role previously played by Julie Walters, while Lox Pratt and Johnny Flynn take over as Draco and Lucius Malfoy from Tom Felton and Jason Isaacs.
Bel Powley will step into the role of Petunia Dursley, with Daniel Rigby playing Vernon Dursley. New faces also include Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown.
The biggest news so far came in late May, when HBO officially revealed its new Golden Trio: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
In a press statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer Mark Mylod couldn't contain their joy, expressing that they were "delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron" after an "extraordinary search" for these legendary characters.

Yungblud says Ozzy Osbourne 'meant everything to him' and admits the Black Sabbath star's death was 'overwhelming' after hearing the news while 'cut off on an island with no internet connection'

Yungblud tearfully revealed that the late Ozzy Osbourne 'meant everything to him' in a new interview this week. The English singer-songwriter had a very strong relationship with Ozzy, who he first met in 2022, and it appeared that their relationship grew into an almost father-son type bond. Yungblud, whose real name is Dominic Harrison, reportedly gave a touching reading at The Black Sabbath frontman's funeral, after his death aged 76 on July 22. He also performed at the Black Sabbath star's farewell gig at Birmingham 's Villa Park in June amid Ozzy's ailing health. And speaking to The Times this week Yungblud, 28, told how his death has felt 'overwhelming' after finding out the sad news after being cut off on an island without internet where he was recording new music. He told the publication: 'I told a friend that I thought Ozzy had another five albums in him. And then he did the show and then he died. It's so overwhelming.' Holding back tears he added: 'I just love him and right till the very end he supported me. I get emotional, because I've loved him since I was about two. 'He taught me self-belief and so I'm going to take his spirit and make sure everybody knows for the rest of my life who Ozzy Osbourne was - he meant everything to me.' Earlier this month Yungblud shared a picture of the gift the rocker gave him before he died, hours after he gave a reading at the funeral at his home in Buckinghamshire. He took to Instagram to share a close-up snap of the cross necklace Ozzy gifted him in 2022, during the filming of his The Funeral music video. Yungblud later returned the favour by gifting Ozzy a custom-made cross necklace before Black Sabbath's final show at Villa Park in Birmingham. He wrote in the caption: 'goodnight oz. your light will forever shine. I love you,' with fans noting in the caption that Ozzy has 'passed the torch of darkness on' to Yungblud. Yungblud previously revealed that the gift from Ozzy was the 'most precious thing' as he paid a 'truly heartbroken' tribute to the rocker. The singer performed Changes at Black Sabbath's final concert and has vowed to play it for Ozzy going forward. Speaking to The Times this week Yungblud, 28, told how his death has felt 'overwhelming'. Yungblud and Sharon pictured together at the Rolling Stone UK Awards in 2023 Rock legend Ozzy was buried in the grounds of his own mansion in Buckinghamshire - as he had said he desired. His widow Sharon, 72, and their children were joined by heavy rock royalty at the event at the family's home near Gerrards Cross, where he was being laid to rest near a lake at the heart of the sprawling 250-acre estate. Marilyn Manson led the stars arriving at Ozzy 's private funeral as the heavy metal icon was laid to rest. Following the funeral Marilyn took to Instagram as he penned: 'Today we laid to rest a beloved friend. I am eternally grateful that you let me into your life Ozzy. 'Your inspiration and love will always be with me. Thank you Sharon and family for a reverent, beautiful ceremony. Your legacy lives on.' Guests also included Manson's wife Lindsay Usich and Ozzy's lead guitarist Zakk Wylde. Ozzy took to the stage for his farewell concert at Villa Park stadium in his native Birmingham less than three weeks before his death - reuniting with his original Black Sabbath bandmates for the first time since 2005. More than 42,000 fans packed into the venue for the Back To The Beginning show, during which he told the crowd in his final speech: 'You've no idea how I feel - thank you from the bottom of my heart.' A message on screen then read: 'Thank you for everything, you guys are f***ing amazing. Birmingham Forever,' before the sky lit up with fireworks. He had told of it being his last performance due to his health, having opened up about his battle with Parkinson's in 2020. He is survived by his wife Sharon and his five children Jessica, Louis, Aimee, Kelly and Jack.

Three more Strictly Come Dancing contestants announced on The One Show

The trio were announced as the latest recruits for the upcoming season live on BBC One's The One Show on Monday. Speaking from the studio after her reveal, former Love Island winner Dyer said: 'It's such a fun magical show – to be asked to do it is such an honour. 'I just can't wait to be able to wear (the costumes) – it's going to be so much fun.' Actress Kingston, who interrupted her holiday in Italy to speak to hosts Alex Scott and Roman Kemp, joked: 'I was super excited but now I'm terrified.' She was best known for her role as Dr Elizabeth Corday in US medical drama ER. Before that she won over British fans for her performance in ITV miniseries The Fortunes And Misfortunes Of Moll Flanders, which earned her a Bafta nomination for best actress. Former Chelsea footballer Hasselbaink said: 'I'm a father of only girls and Strictly is a part of our home life – I like the show. 'Let's have a go.' He added: 'It's totally out of my comfort zone. 'Playing football in front of 60,000 or 70,000 people is easy but dancing with a partner who knows it 10 times, 100 times, better than you is crazy.' Hasselbaink also teased the idea that he might be bringing a few of his former footballing friends along to watch live. 'I'm in contact with Robbie (Fowler), with Carlo Cudicini, so who knows,' he said. They join Olympic sprinter and Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who was the first contestant confirmed for the 2025 line-up earlier in the day. Aikines-Aryeetey, known as Nitro on the rebooted Gladiators, previously competed in last year's Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special and described his decision to return as 'so nice I just had to do it twice'. In July, the BBC announced that two 'incredible' new professional dancers, US-born Alexis Warr and Australian dancer Julian Caillon, would be joining the show, which starts this autumn. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman are back to present with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas returning as judges. Strictly will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its new series this September.

Suranne Jones watched Starmer and Sunak ‘battle' in preparation for new role

In an interview with Radio Times, Jones discussed her upcoming Netflix drama Hostage in which she plays a fictional British prime minister whose husband is kidnapped. The series, which will be released on the streaming platform on August 21, sees Julie Delpy play a fictional visiting French president who is blackmailed, leaving the two leaders to face unimaginable choices. On her preparation for the role, Jones said: 'We spoke to people in positions of power. 'We went to the House of Commons, and we watched Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer battle against each other. 'We met with the Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle. We looked at Nicola Sturgeon. And Jacinda Ardern (the former prime minister of New Zealand). 'We looked at Theresa May. And Lucy Powell (MP for Manchester Central). 'We had fun developing it. It made me think about what being a woman of power means, and what it costs.' She added: 'The whole thing is about you, your family unit, how women split themselves between work and home, what the cost is, how you want to be portrayed, how the world perceives you as a woman, and what you have to battle with, before you start your day. 'All of that is going on before you put your heels on. 'And you might not want to put your heels on. And your power suit. But actually, you have to in order to make a mark in the room.' Jones rose to fame playing Karen McDonald on ITV soap Coronation Street, and the actress is due to star in the third series of BBC police drama Vigil, which is being filmed this year with a release date yet to be announced. The full interview can be read in the latest edition of Radio Times magazine.
