Oregon Ducks crack early top 25 men's basketball rankings ahead of 2025 season
"Another new addition to the rankings, Oregon is looking to maintain success after an up-and-down season," Paul Myerberg, Jordan Mendoza, Eddie Timings and Erick Smith wrote. "Back are the top two scorers in Nate Bittle and Jackson Shelstad, who are consistent scorers. But they can't be the only ones producing, and the Ducks have to replace TJ Bamba."
"That appears to be answered in the transfer portal," they continued. "TK Simpkins led Elon in scoring last season and improved his 3-point shooting. Sean Stewart (Ohio State) also could be a breakout player as he finds a more elevated role."
Included in the rankings were six other Big Ten teams, demonstrating another year of tremendous competition in the Ducks' second year in the conference.
Oregon reached as high as No. 9 in the AP Poll a season ago after a blistering 12-1 start to the season. They cooled off once conference play began, but still put together a very respectable 12-8 record in Big Ten matchups and a 24-9 overall record prior to the NCAA Tournament.
After being named the No. 5 seed in the East Region, the Ducks took care of the 12th-seeded Liberty Falcons, defeating them by 29 points. The second round presented a tough matchup with the fourth-seeded Arizona Wildcats led by fifth-year senior Caleb Love.
Oregon was out-dueled by Love and the Wildcats, losing an 87-83 shootout.
Shelstad and Bittle showed no fear however, with the former scoring a team-high 25 points on nine of 14 shooting from the field and three of six from 3-point range. Bittle connected on seven of 13 field goals, scoring 16 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.
Both transfers in Simpkins (16.4 points per game last season) and Stewart (5.7 points, 5.8 rebounds per game) along with former Texas wing Devon Pryor, rated a four-star transfer per 247 Sports, should have a positive impact come the season.
But it will all come down to the performances of Shelstad and Bittle, who each have the abilities to lead the Ducks to a successful season and are worthy of the No. 24 ranking.

2025 College Football Odds: Can Big Ten Powers Go Undefeated?
College Football 2025 College Football Odds: Can Big Ten Powers Go Undefeated? Published Aug. 18, 2025 2:37 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Going undefeated in college football is a rare achievement. Only a handful of teams have finished with a perfect record over the last 30 years. And while t he preseason poll was released last week, and the Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 1, oddsmakers aren't convinced they are the team most likely to complete an unbeaten season. So, if not Texas, then who? Let's take a look ahead at the odds at FanDuel Sportsbook as of Aug. 18. To finish the 2025 regular season undefeated Penn State: +410 (bet $10 to win $51 total) Ohio State: +410 (bet $10 to win $51 total) Notre Dame: +420 (bet $10 to win $52 total) Clemson: +430 (bet $10 to win $53 total) Georgia: +500 (bet $10 to win $60 total) Liberty: +550 (bet $10 to win $65 total) Oregon: +650 (bet $10 to win $75 total) Texas: +650 (bet $10 to win $75 total) Alabama: +750 (bet $10 to win $85 total) Boise State: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total) Miami (FL): +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total) Since 1994, a handful of FBS programs have gone without a loss. Nebraska boasts the most undefeated seasons with three, all coming from 1994 to 1997. Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, Utah, Auburn and Alabama each have two over the last three decades. Since the AP first released its Top 25 list in 1936, however, there have been 64 NCAA-recognized undefeated champions, including co-title holders, according to ESPN. Notre Dame has the most undefeated, championship-winning campaigns with six, followed by Nebraska and Alabama, each with five. ADVERTISEMENT The most recent squad to go undefeated was Michigan in 2023, finishing 15-0 and capturing the CFP title. Georgia accomplished the same the year prior. The longest streak of perfection over the last 30 years spanned from 1997 to 2002, during which at least one program went undefeated in six consecutive seasons. Clemson, Ohio State in Joel Klatt's preseason CFP bracket After winning their first national championship under Ryan Day and posting a 14-2 record last year, the Ohio State Buckeyes sit atop the oddsboard to go undefeated in 2025. But they share that top spot with Penn State, which finished 13-3 in 2024 and enters this season at No. 2 in the AP Poll, one spot ahead of OSU. Meanwhile, Texas — despite its No. 1 AP preseason ranking — is tied at seventh on the oddsboard. The Longhorns went 13-3 last season, with their first loss coming in Week 7 to Georgia. The Athletic re-ranked college football's preseason polls. Here's where Florida landed
The US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 preseason rankings have now been out for at least a week, giving sports media time to digest these initial opinions and respond with their own hot takes. Among those who have taken on the task of reranking the full lineup of 136 Football Bowl Subdivision schools is The Athletic's Chris Vannini, who placed the Florida Gators at No. 15 — consistent with the Associated Press' results. That puts Billy Napier and Co. between the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines and No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels. "The DJ Lagway momentum must continue, but let's hope those preseason camp injuries aren't serious," Vannini offers. That Athletic's rerank stands in stark contrast to that of USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg, who has the Orange and Blue just barely cracking the top 25 at No. 25 overall — eight spots below their Coaches Poll ranking and 10 spots below the AP Poll. Cleveland Browns name starting QB between Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders
The Cleveland Browns have named Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Former Oregon Ducks passer Dillon Gabriel was one of four players in the mix for the spot, with Flacco earning the nod. Flacco, 40, was signed by the Browns this offseason. In addition to signing Flacco, Cleveland traded for 2022 first-round quarterback Kenny Pickett, who flamed out with the Pittsburgh Steelers in two seasons before serving as the Philadelphia Eagles' backup last season. They then drafted Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 draft before selecting Shedeur Sanders a day later in the fifth round, complicating matters in the quarterback room and putting the Week 1 starting job in question. Gabriel and Sanders received playing time in the first two Browns preseason games, each throwing for over 100 yards and showing the ability to move the offense down the field. Flacco and Pickett have yet to appear in the preseason. In the end, Flacco, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, will be the guy for Cleveland come Week 1 when they face off against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7.
