The Open 2025: Portrush restaurant, Ramore, to review golf tournament price hike
More than 275,000 spectators are expected to descend on Portrush over the coming days, making it the largest sporting event held in Northern Ireland. The Ramore is not the only business in Portrush to introduce price rises but it has been the focus of online criticism in recent days, with some sharing last year's menu for comparison.
What else has Ramore said?
The Ramore Restaurants group includes the Harbour Bar, Ramore Wine Bar, Basalt and Neptune and Prawn. The hike in prices, Ramore Restaurants said, "reflects the significant investment we've made to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and high-quality experience for both locals and visitors".It said it had brought in more than 30 agency staff to support its employees, more than 30 security personnel and more than 20 entertainers over the course of the tournament.
"All of our restaurants are open every day during this exceptionally busy period, and we're committed to delivering the best possible hospitality to everyone who visits," the group said.It added: "That said, we've listened to the feedback and, as of today, have taken steps to revise and adjust pricing across all of our restaurant menus going forward."
More demand, higher prices
In a market economy prices are a mechanism for allocating scarce goods - in this case a meal at a restaurant. At a time of very high demand on the north coast how should restaurants ration their limited supply of tables? The economical rational answer is to increase prices: this makes a meal unaffordable for some customers while those who are willing and able to pay the higher price will get their meal. This price mechanism will be familiar to anyone who has been on a beach holiday: there is more demand for a seat in a beachfront bar therefore prices are higher compared to those places a few streets inland.
Mixed reaction
The recent price hikes, which also saw a fillet steak rise to £42.95 and chicken goujons go up from £9.95 to £19.95, were met with a mixed reaction in Portrush on Monday.Alwyn Darragh from Sion Mills told BBC News NI he did not think the increase was justifiable."Not for the local people who are always coming here. Putting the prices up is definitely not right," he said.
Similarly, Ann Grimley from Armagh said rising prices would mean eating out for a lot of families would be challenging."I wouldn't pay, especially if you have children with you it is a lot of money. But some of the restaurants are reasonable enough… you have to shop around," she said.
Prices 'going up' in Portrush
Simon Patterson and son Sam were also enjoying a day out in Portrush on Monday. He said he has noticed prices going up in the town over recent times."But at the same time I think you expect it whenever there is a lot of revenue coming in for the town," he said."Anyone who comes here maybe expects things to be a wee bit more expensive this week," he added.
Price rises 'should not be unexpected'
Glen Simpson, from Ballymoney, works in Portrush.Hosting The Open, and the huge crowds expected, is a "great thing for the town," he told the BBC.Price rises, he added, should not be wholly unexpected."You have to put those staff on the floor, you are going to have to cover those costs," he said."It is what it is. I just think you are living in that time when prices are high, if you were to go on holiday anywhere you would see the same."
The championship was last played in Portrush in 2019.Organisers say The Open championship generates more than 5,000 hours of global television coverage, with the competition beamed into 500 million homes. It is estimated that the championship will boost the Northern Ireland economy by more than £200m.

Tánaiste to hold talks with Northern leaders over US trade deals
Tánaiste Simon Harris will hold talks with the leaders of the Northern Executive on trade deals with the US later on Thursday. A focus of the talks will be the prospect of two different tariff rates being applied on the island, which Mr Harris has warned will pose 'huge complexities' for businesses. Advertisement An agreement was recently reached that will see most goods exported from the EU to the US subject to a 15 per cent tariff. However, exports from Northern Ireland into the US are subject to a 10 per cent levy, under a separate deal made between the UK and the US. The talks with Northern politicians come ahead of a trade forum of business stakeholders in Government Buildings in Dublin on Friday. The forum has been called to map out the Republic's response to the announcement that 15 per cent tariffs will be applied on EU goods. Advertisement Ireland One-off payments for businesses 'not sustainable'... Read More A spokesperson for Mr Harris said: 'With a lower tariff rate of 10 per cent announced for the UK, the Tanaiste will seek the views of stakeholders as to the scale of the challenge that would be posed by two different rates.' Mr Harris is also expected to receive an update on Thursday from the EU's leading negotiator on trade, Commissioner Maros Sefcovic. They will discuss the ongoing work by the European Commission to agree a final negotiation text with the US, and whether exemptions may be granted for certain sectors.

Mourne Mountains: Gondola project 'dead', says councillor
A council that has twice seen its plans to develop a cable car style ride in the Mourne Mountains fail will be given an opportunity to submit an alternative project to Mourne and Down Council had been hoping to receive £30m from the Belfast Region City Deal – with the balance of around £15m to come from the planned for Slieve Donard in Newcastle, the project was moved to Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor in May after the National Trust, which owns land on Slieve Donard, refused to grant a week the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs said it would not be allowing the council to use land it controls (via Forest Service) at Kilbroney. According to local councillor Jarlath Tinnelly the council has "no plan C"."This project is clearly dead in the water,"he said."Council is now trying to come up with another scheme and I don't think that is a credible position. "I first heard about this in the press... councillors weren't event told through official channels in the council. What the plans are, what other alternatives there are I am not aware of because there has been no official engagement from council to councillors."In its statement on the matter the council said it remained, "committed to securing the £30m BRCD (The Belfast Region City Deal) investment for the district and is actively exploring options with partners." In Rostrevor on Thursday locals were discussing where they believe the money would be better of them is Gerry Sloan, he said he thinks the funding should be divided between towns and villages in south Down."The outdoor swimming pool in Warrenpoint, the marina they'd talked about, housing in Rostrevor, new playing fields in Rostrevor and around the coast to Newcastle, Attical, Kilkeel, Greencastle," he a statement from Belfast City Council which stands over the wider City Deal project suggested this approach wouldn't be viable."NMDDC (Newry, Mourne and Down Council) will be given an opportunity to submit an alternative project in line with the overall objectives of the Deal, for consideration by the Executive Board in liaison with UK Government and NI Government Departments," the statement read."Alternative project options would need to align to Belfast Region City Deal objectives of creating a step change in inclusive economic growth and creating more and better jobs for the Belfast region and would require an outline business case and a full business case, which demonstrate value for money and financial sustainability, approved by the accountable department." Last month it was confirmed that nearly £1.35m had been spent on the gondola project at the point it left Newcastle to come to Rostrevor. That cost will have risen in the Mourne and Down Council now faces the challenge of presenting an alternative, suitable project or it will lose out on £30m of this end the council has stated, "Further updates will be provided in the coming weeks."
