Is WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (DXJ) a Strong ETF Right Now?
Launched on 06/16/2006, the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (DXJ) is a smart beta exchange traded fund offering broad exposure to the Asia-Pacific (Developed) ETFs category of the market.
The ETF industry has long been dominated by products based on market cap weighted indexes, a strategy created to reflect the market or a particular market segment.
Market cap weighted indexes offer a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns, and are a good option for investors who believe in market efficiency.
There are some investors, though, who think it's possible to beat the market with great stock selection; this group likely invests in another class of funds known as smart beta, which track non-cap weighted strategies.
These indexes attempt to select stocks that have better chances of risk-return performance, based on certain fundamental characteristics or a combination of such characteristics.
Even though this space provides many choices to investors--think one of the simplest methodologies like equal-weighting and more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting--not all have been able to deliver first-rate results.
DXJ is managed by Wisdomtree, and this fund has amassed over $3.44 billion, which makes it one of the larger ETFs in the Asia-Pacific (Developed) ETFs. Before fees and expenses, DXJ seeks to match the performance of the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Index.
The WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Index is designed to provide exposure to Japanese equity markets while at the same time neutralizing exposure to fluctuations of the Japanese Yen movements relative to the U.S. dollar.
Since cheaper funds tend to produce better results than more expensive funds, assuming all other factors remain equal, it is important for investors to pay attention to an ETF's expense ratio.
Annual operating expenses for DXJ are 0.48%, which makes it on par with most peer products in the space.
The fund has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 3.11%.
It is important to delve into an ETF's holdings before investing despite the many upsides to these kinds of funds like diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.
When you look at individual holdings, Toyota Motor Corp accounts for about 5.21% of the fund's total assets, followed by Mitsubishi Ufj Financial Group and Japan Tobacco Inc.
Its top 10 holdings account for approximately 31.15% of DXJ's total assets under management.
So far this year, DXJ has added about 3.07%, and was up about 7.13% in the last one year (as of 06/02/2025). During this past 52-week period, the fund has traded between $91.43 and $117.51.
The fund has a beta of 0.41 and standard deviation of 19.48% for the trailing three-year period, which makes DXJ a medium risk choice in this particular space. With about 448 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.
WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Asia-Pacific (Developed) ETFs segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.
JPMorgan BetaBuilders Japan ETF (BBJP) tracks MORNINGSTAR JAPAN TRGT MRKT EXPOSURE ID and the iShares MSCI Japan ETF (EWJ) tracks MSCI Japan Index. JPMorgan BetaBuilders Japan ETF has $13.02 billion in assets, iShares MSCI Japan ETF has $15.03 billion. BBJP has an expense ratio of 0.19% and EWJ charges 0.50%.
Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Asia-Pacific (Developed) ETFs.

Japanese Bonds Back on Stage With Another Sale of Longer Debt
Japan's sovereign debt is back in the spotlight as the government prepares for another sale of super-long-term bonds after dismal showings at recent auctions, as demand for the far-end of the curve sputters across the globe. The results from the finance ministry's auction of 30-year bonds are due at 12:35 p.m. Tokyo time. The 30-year yield was at 2.945% ahead of Thursday's sale, down from 3.185% last month, the highest level since it was first sold. Some investors are concerned that yields may surge again if the 30-year bond sale sees little demand.

Starbucks Reshuffles Leadership to Accelerate Turnaround Bid
(Bloomberg) — Starbucks Corp. is reorganizing part of its senior ranks, looking to speed up plans to reverse a sales slump. ICE Moves to DNA-Test Families Targeted for Deportation with New Contract The Global Struggle to Build Safer Cars At London's New Design Museum, Visitors Get Hands-On Access NYC Residents Want Safer Streets, Cheaper Housing, Survey Says The Buffalo Architect Fighting for Women in Design Mike Grams, hired last year as head of North America stores, will become chief operating officer, according to an announcement Wednesday. His responsibilities will expand to include the department in charge of building and renovating stores, led by Meredith Sandland, and the supply-chain division helmed by Sanjay Shah. The company is also fusing its global brand and global coffee teams to further emphasize coffee as the core of the company's menu, product innovation and marketing. As a result, Michelle Burns, executive vice president of global coffee and sustainability, will report to Tressie Lieberman, the company's chief brand officer. Starbucks shares were little changed in extended trading on Wednesday. The stock has declined 3.4% so far this year, compared to a 1.5% increase in the S&P 500 Index. Starbucks is enacting the changes to accelerate its turnaround after disappointing results last quarter. Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol has said performance 'isn't yet where we want it to be.' 'We're on the right path, but we need to move faster,' Niccol said in the announcement. 'We're making additional organizational changes to help bring teams closer together, strengthen leadership accountability and allow teams to move with even greater clarity and urgency.' In other changes, Chief Technology Officer Deb Hall Lefevre will report to Cathy Smith, the company's new chief financial officer. The move should help the company speed up the deployment of technology that could make service faster, including an algorithm that helps prioritize drink orders. Additionally, Chief Legal Officer Brad Lerman will leave Starbucks and assist with the search for his successor. The company earlier this year cut 1,100 corporate jobs in a bid to remove duplication and speed up decision making. (Adds shares and details in sixth paragraph and eighth paragraphs.) Walmart Pledges Transparency on Prices After Drawing Trump's Ire
(Bloomberg) — Walmart Inc. said it will continue to communicate the impact of tariffs with investors, consumers and policymakers after President Donald Trump criticized the retailer's plans to raise prices. ICE Moves to DNA-Test Families Targeted for Deportation with New Contract The Global Struggle to Build Safer Cars At London's New Design Museum, Visitors Get Hands-On Access NYC Residents Want Safer Streets, Cheaper Housing, Survey Says The Buffalo Architect Fighting for Women in Design 'We don't aim to be a political figure. We are providing facts as they come,' Dan Bartlett, executive vice president of corporate affairs, told reporters in response to a question about tariff discussions at the company's annual shareholders' week in Bentonville, Arkansas. Trump blasted Walmart last month on social media after the retailer said it would raise prices of some goods in the wake of new tariffs. Trump said Walmart should 'eat the tariffs' rather than passing its increased costs onto consumers. Bartlett said Wednesday that Walmart aims to be consistent with what it shares internally among employees and externally to the public. During the earnings call in mid-May, executives felt that they had an obligation to tell investors and customers how they were thinking about future guidance, he said. The world's largest retailer has said price changes will become more pronounced as the year progresses. Some prices won't change, thanks in part to production moves and some suppliers changing materials to mitigate tariffs. The company will maintain price gaps to competitors and keep prices as low as possible, Bartlett said.
