Uche Ikpeazu urged to remind Hearts fans how effective he can be with St Johnstone

The Courier14-05-2025

Daniels Balodis knows how challenging it is to shackle St Johnstone team-mate, Uche Ikpeazu, on the training ground.
He's got a broken nose to show for it.
And the Latvian international is hoping the powerful forward's old club, Hearts, get a taste of Saints' new-found frontline physicality.
'Uche is a strong striker,' said Balodis. 'He helps our style a lot.
'It's hard to play against him and I'm happy we have him in our team now.
'He is making it hard for other defenders, creating some chances for us and getting some moments.
'It's an important game against Hearts and hopefully he can score for us against them.
'He was very apologetic to me when my nose was broken.
'I just said: 'No worries.' It's part of the game and it happens. I know that he didn't want to break my nose!
'It was just unlucky.'
The medical advice to Balodis was for him to wear a mask in matches for a few weeks.
But the centre-back decided one game, the Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic, was enough for him.
'I didn't like it,' he said.
'It might have been a little bit risky to play without it for a while but I prefer that I can give every concentration for the game.
'So, I chose not to play with it on.
'There is the vision aspect, and also just the feeling on your face – it's not quite right.
'You cannot head the ball totally properly with the mask.
'Headers are very important for me.
'There have been some moments when it has been a bit sore.
'I got one in the mouth just below my nose. It was a hard kick, against Motherwell.
'It hurt but luckily it wasn't my nose.'
As the last fit centre-half available to Simo Valakari, Balodis knows that there is extra responsibility on his shoulders to keep the players not used to the position right.
'Of course, I am trying to help every team-mate who is on the pitch,' he said.
'The whole team is working hard to defend, not just defenders but midfielders and strikers.
'That's football these days.
'It's a dirty job, it's hard work but it's so important for the team.
'We got the job done on Saturday and we have kept it going.
'Now we have the next job to get done.
'Everything is coming at us quickly and we are looking forward to it.
'We have to think the same way as before – in every game we go for the win.
'We need these points.'
That Saints have sold out their full allocation of tickets for this game shows that they haven't lost faith in the great escape.
'The fans are unbelievable,' said Balodis. 'We can feel their support in this hard situation.
'In the last game, it helped us get the result that we needed.
'It is our aim that together we will get another good result.'

Club legend Colin Cameron ousted as Raith Rovers appoint Andy Kirk as Barry Robson's new assistant

Assistant-manager Colin Cameron has left Raith Rovers to be replaced by Andy Kirk. Cameron has been ousted as part of a changes to Barry Robson's backroom staff at Stark's Park this summer. The 52-year-old started his playing career at Raith before leaving his hometown team in 1996 for a move to Hearts. The midfielder had subsequent spells with Wolves, Coventry City and Dundee before moving into management at Cowdenbeath. And he then returned to his first club in 2022 as number two to Ian Murray, who he had worked with for a short spell at Airdrie. He survived a change in manager at Rovers last season when Murray was sacked and replaced by Neill Collins. With Collins then being replaced by Barry Robson in December, Cameron saw out the season as part of the ex-Aberdeen manager's backroom team. A hall of fame member from his playing career, he has been a popular figure with the first-team squad through all the changes. However, it has been decided to shake up Robson's staff for next term and the former Scotland internationalist has fallen victim to the changes. A statement read: 'After three seasons as assistant manager, Rovers legend 'Micky' Cameron is now set to move on. 'We'd like to say a huge thank you to Micky for his contributions during his time in the dugout and wish him all the best in his next chapter.' As revealed by Courier Sport, Andy Kirk is the man Raith have turned to as replacement for Cameron. Kirk has been been removed from his role as St Johnstone assistant-manager, with boss Simo Valakari keen to move in a different direction and get his own men in following relegation from the Premiership. Kirk was taken to McDiarmid Park as Craig Levein's number two following a spell coaching at Hearts and stints as manager of Hearts Women and Brechin City. The former Northern Ireland internationalist spent five years as a player with rivals Dunfermline but has built a growing reputation as a coach since hanging up his boots in 2014. A Raith statement said: 'Raith Rovers Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Andy Kirk as the club's new assistant-manager. 'As Barry Robson continues to build his squad, Andy was identified as a key figure he wanted to add to his backroom staff.'

The last Hearts team to face Sunderland ahead of summer clash as major changes occur inside four years

Hearts legend Craig Gordon has been rewarded for his impressive service at Tynecastle with a testimonial against former club Sunderland. The Scotland veteran has made 330 appearances over two spells with the club and spent five years with Sunderland after joining the Black Cats in a reported £9m move during the summer of 2007. Just weeks after agreeing a new one-year deal at Tynecastle, Gordon will celebrate his lengthy service with a clash of his current and former clubs on Saturday, July 26. He said: 'Throughout my career I've won trophies, played at the highest level and represented my country, but what fills me with pride the most is pulling on that Hearts jersey and walking out in front of our fans. To be able to share a testimonial year with our supporters is very special to me. It's also particularly pleasing to look forward to welcoming Sunderland to Tynecastle. 'I enjoyed some great times at the Stadium of Light and they hold a special place in my heart. I extend my thanks to everyone on my testimonial committee for all of their hard work, and the club for their support, in organising what I hope will be an enjoyable testimonial year for our magnificent supporters. Without their backing, I would not have been able to achieve what I have in my career and for that I am forever grateful.' This will not be the first time Hearts and Sunderland have met in pre-season as their last meeting ended with 2-0 win for the Black Cats in July 2021 thanks to two goals from Celtic winger Aidan McGeady - but who started for Hearts on that day? Two thugs who helped ambush rival football fans in pub banned from games for two years

Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into Airdrie's West End Bar where St Johnstone fans had gathered before a Scottish Cup tie against Airdrieonians. Two thugs who helped ambush rival football fans in a pub have been banned from attending games for two years. A court heard A irdrieonians supporter Cameron Patey "got a buzz" out of causing trouble. ‌ Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into the town's West End Bar where St Johnstone fans had gathered before a Scottish Cup tie against the Diamonds. ‌ Airdrie Sheriff Court heard a group of home fans confronted the Perth side's supporters and a fight spilled on to the street. Patey, 22, Ryan Lawrence, 29, and Nathan Dunsmore, 26, admitted causing a breach of the peace by fighting, shouting and swearing on January 20 last year. Annette Ward, prosecuting, said Airdrie fans were seen on CCTV leaving another pub and heading for the West End Bar before the match. She told the court: "They had their hoods up and their faces partially covered with scarves. The three accused were part of the group. "A large group of St Johnstone fans were already inside the West End Bar. ‌ "As soon as the Airdrie supporters arrived there was an altercation that turned into a scuffle between the two groups. "This quickly spilled on to the street and in the course of that an individual was assaulted by two unidentified males." The court heard that a fourth Airdrie fan was seen on CCTV picking up two bottles and throwing them into the pub. ‌ He was also charged but has since died. Patey has a previous conviction which resulted in him being given a football banning order. Lawrence also has football-related previous convictions. ‌ The court heard that, when asked about his role in the trouble, Patey told a social worker: "It's an escape. It gives me a buzz." But defence lawyer Tony Linden said: "He now describes his conduct as pathetic. His days of attending football matches and seeking out trouble are gone. "He plans to leave the Airdrie area and has an offer of employment with a starting salary of £40,000." ‌ Fraser McKinnon, defending Lawrence, said he accepted responsibility for his behaviour, but the lawyer added: "From the CCTV, it appears his involvement was at the lower end of the scale." Nicky Matteo, for Dunsmore, told the court: "This happened at a time when he was drinking and taking drugs to excess." Sheriff Joseph Hughes imposed two-year football banning orders on Patey, of School Quadrant, and Lawrence, of Park Street, both Airdrie. ‌ These will cover all regulated games in the UK and the pair are also banned from watching televised football in licensed premises. The sheriff said: "I'm satisfied this offence was related to the football match that day. It matters not if it happened before the game started. "It is appropriate to impose these banning orders to prevent violence or disorder at, or in connection with, football matches." ‌ Patey was also warned that he must behave himself over the next nine months while Lawrence will be under supervision for two years and electronically tagged for nine months, meaning he's confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day. Sentence on Dunsmore, who is in custody on other matters, was deferred until December.
