Botafogo owner Textor faces fan fury over team's performance via leaked number
April 25 (Reuters) - John Textor, the American businessman whose Eagle Football Group owns stakes in Olympique Lyonnais, Crystal Palace, and Botafogo, found himself directly in the firing line of Botafogo fans after his personal phone number was leaked online.
The reigning Brazilian and South American champions have made a disappointing start to the season, prompting fans to express their discontent directly to the owner after his number started circulating in fans' WhatsApp groups in the country.
The leak of Textor's number, the origin of which remains unknown but confirmed to Reuters by sources close to the club as genuine, led to an onslaught of messages from disgruntled fans. Neither Textor nor Botafogo have responded publicly, but the sources added that the matter is now in the hands of the police.
Textor has faced intense scrutiny for the extended search to find a successor to coach Artur Jorge, who announced in January his departure to manage Qatar's Al-Rayyan. Jorge led Botafogo to a Brasileirao Serie A and Copa Libertadores double.
The appointment of Portuguese coach Renato Paiva in late February, after failed attempts to secure Andre Jardine from Club America and former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, has not quelled the rising tide of dissatisfaction amongst the Botafogo faithful.
Paiva, a lower-profile figure, took over a squad that had lost key players like Luiz Henrique and Argentina's Thiago Almada. Defeats in the South American Recopa and Brazilian Super Cup finals compounded an early exit from the Rio de Janeiro-based Campeonato Carioca.
Despite the team's struggles, Textor stood by his appointment of Paiva, citing a belief in the coach's attacking philosophy. However, Botafogo's title defence has been lacklustre, recording two wins in eight matches under Paiva.
Botafogo are third in Group A of the Libertadores and are 15th in the Brazilian top-flight with five points from five outings.
Botafogo fans flooded social media with screenshots of text messages voicing dissatisfaction at the club's direction and demanding Paiva's removal. Some supporters even shared what they purport to be responses from Textor prior to his number change.

Now it's claimed Ten Hag never wanted to bring Antony to United in the first place and attempted to pull the breaks on the transfer, despite previous suggestions he was key to the move happening. The claim also suggests United pushed through with the move after learning Arsenal were set to make an approach for the player - but Ten Hag still supported him and tried to help him during his time at the club. Kees Vos, the co-founder of Ten Hag's agency, wrote in the book ' Liverpool and the Dutch': "Ten Hag and Vos were not in favour of this and wanted to stop the transfer. "But the club wanted to push through at all costs, because Arsenal was also interested in Antony. The risk of a stronger competitor would be great. Ultimately, Manchester United paid almost €100million for Antony. "Although Ten Hag did not support this transfer, it stuck with him throughout his entire time in Manchester that he took over the attacker from Ajax for this ill-fated amount, who was never able to fulfil his promise." Antony has been a much bigger success in La Liga, where he has scored nine goals and provided two assists and has become a much-loved member of the squad under new boss Manuel Pellegrini. Betis are hoping to sign him permanently this summer and Antony has previously spoken about how he has a smile on his face again after struggling with his mental health at United. In an emotional interview last month, Antony broke down in tears as he revealed he went days without eating and locked himself in his room. Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, he said: "(Betis) changed a lot because i needed to find myself, because of everything I went through in my personal life. As I said, I wanted to do things, but they didn't see to work out because I wasn't happy, I didn't feel that desire to play football, and I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved. "I went through difficult times [at United] when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn't take it anymore. [My brother] told me to hold on a little longer, that things were going to change. It even made me emotional, because they were very hard days for me." June 10 (Reuters) - Bianca Andreescu and second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova both kicked off their grasscourt campaigns with solid first-round wins at the Libema Open in Den Bosch, as rain caused significant delays throughout Tuesday's second day of play. Andreescu eased past Taiwan's Joanna Garland 6-1 6-3 as the 24-year-old Canadian put on a strong performance without facing a single break point and secured victory in 74 minutes. The former U.S. Open champion, who missed out on qualifying for Roland Garros, will next face New Zealand's Lulu Sun. Alexandrova advanced to the second round with a composed 6-3 6-4 win over Georgia's Mariam Bolkvadze, despite a lengthy rain delay disrupting the first set. Australia seal World Cup spot with win over Saudi as Oman deny Palestine
HONG KONG, June 10 (Reuters) - Australia sealed qualification for the World Cup on Tuesday when Tony Popovic's side secured a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah while Oman kept their hopes of a place at the finals alive with a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Palestine in Jordan. The Socceroos had to avoid a five-goal defeat to confirm their appearance at a sixth consecutive finals, and goals from Connor Metcalfe and Mitch Duke earned the Australians a come-from-behind win to brush aside the Saudis. Abdulrahman Al-Obud had given the home side a glimmer of hope when he netted from close range in the 19th minute but Metcalfe equalised with three minutes left in the half to extinguish Saudi dreams.
