At least five cases of scams involving sale of Singapore National Day parade tickets since July 1
SINGAPORE: At least five cases of e-commerce scams involving the sale of National Day Parade (NDP) tickets have been reported since July 1.
In these cases, with total losses amounting to about S$250, victims encountered listings of ticket sales via platforms such as Telegram and Facebook, said the police on July 31.
When the victims expressed interest to purchase the tickets, they were directed to make payment via PayNow.
The victims realised that they had been duped only when they did not receive the tickets, or when scammers became uncontactable.
NDP tickets are not for sale, but are instead distributed for free via a balloting system on Singpass.
Re-selling of the tickets is strictly prohibited, and action will be taken against those caught scalping or using the tickets for fraudulent purposes, the NDP executive committee has said.
Tickets that are obtained via unauthorised channels will be rendered void, and those holding such tickets will be denied entry to the venue, the police added.
The NDP in 2025, which celebrates Singapore's 60th birthday, will be held at the Padang on Aug 9.
E-commerce was the top scam type in Singapore in 2024, with 11,665 cases reported and at least $17.5 million lost.
Members of the public are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of sales listings before making purchases, and to report suspicious cases promptly.

If convicted, they could each be jailed for up to seven years and fined up to $100,000. They are among eight men and 20 women, aged between 21 and 61, who were arrested for their suspected involvement in vice-related offences. In a July 31 statement, the police said the raids on July 30 took place around Jalan Layang Layang in the Toh Tuck area, Pasir Panjang Road, Boon Lay Avenue, Craig Road in Tanjong Pagar, Jurong West Street 71, Beach Road, Tai Seng Avenue, Bencoolen Street, Kim Yam Road in River Valley, Onan Road, Orchard Road, and Jalan Kemaman off Balestier Road. Other items seized included cash, funds in bank accounts, two mobile phones, laptops and vice-related paraphernalia. 4 students detained over assault of classmate

Kuala Lumpur: Four 13-year-old students have been detained by the police to assist in investigations into the assault of a classmate at a shopping centre in Kajang. Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the boys were detained following a report lodged by their classmate at 12.57pm yesterday. He said investigations found that the incident occurred at about 11am on July 30, when the complainant and his classmates went to the shopping centre to address a disagreement. 'During the incident, a viral video captured the complainant being assaulted by two students, while two others recorded the act on their mobile phones,' he said in a statement. Naazron added that the victim received medical treatment at a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed to have sustained minor facial injuries. The four students involved were arrested in Kajang at 8.35pm yesterday and remanded for two days until Aug 2 to assist in investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 506 of the same law for criminal intimidation, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. Naazron advised students to obey school rules and to avoid actions that could affect their future. Action taken against student who punched teacher in Kajang, says Education Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will not compromise with any misconduct involving school staff, including the recent incident of a student hitting a teacher in Kajang, Selangor. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said she had taken note of the incident and was informed that it happened due to a misunderstanding between the students involved. "Quick action has been taken. Four students involved have been detained by the police to assist in the investigation. "The Education Ministry will not compromise with this misconduct and will take firm action based on the results of the police investigation," she said in a Facebook post on Friday (Aug 1). She also instructed the school and the District Education Office to implement intervention programs to ensure the safety and well-being of the school community.
