Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi scored either side of half-time as European champions Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders to secure their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup.
PSG needed to bounce back from their 1-0 loss at the hands of Botafogo in their last Group B outing and they were too strong for the MLS side without ever really playing to their full potential.
Kvaratskhelia deflected a wayward Vitinha shot into the net to open the scoring on 35 minutes in front of 50,628 fans at Lumen Field, Sounders' home stadium.
Hakimi then made it 2-0 just before the midway point in the second half to kill off any prospect of a comeback by the hosts.
PSG are through and advance as group winners on goal difference, climbing up from second place because of Botafogo's late defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid at the same time in Pasadena.
The French champions will now go through to a tie against the Group A runners-up in Atlanta on Sunday, as they leave the west coast for the first time since arriving in the United States.
"It wasn't easy because the pitch was very different to what we are used to in Europe so we couldn't play with the fluidity that we like, but we adapted," said PSG coach Luis Enrique.
He complained that the ball "bounced around like a rabbit" but also praised the opposition for their performance.
"It was a great match, difficult for us, tough from the beginning because Seattle played a great match, with intensity and quality on and off the ball," said the Spaniard. (AFP)

'Football cup strengthens ties between SAR and Saudi'

'Football cup strengthens ties between SAR and Saudi' A fan asks Al-Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to autograph a football jersey. Photo: RTHK Hosting the Saudi Super Cup in Hong Kong will strengthen football ties between the SAR and Saudi Arabia and hopefully promote the sport in the city by giving fans a taste of 'international standard' games, local football officials said. The city is hosting the annual football tournament this week, featuring four top clubs from the Saudi Pro League, for the first time. Event organisers, alongside the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA), the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) and participating clubs, held a pre-tournament press conference at a hotel in Admiralty on Monday. HKFA general secretary Charles Cheung expressed gratitude to SAFF for bringing the tournament to the SAR. 'This is a very formal competition," he said. "We hope that this can give Hong Kong football some inspiration about what international standards are,' he said. 'We hope this tournament will help maintain a long-term relationship between the HKFA and the SAFF... We have four great teams from Saudi Arabia, and we would also like to bring some beautiful games to Hong Kong.' SAFF deputy secretary general Ibrahim Alkabbaa said they have worked tirelessly to bring the tournament to Hong Kong and are excited to see it finally happening. The tournament will kick off with Al-Nassr facing Al-Ittihad in the first semi-final on Tuesday, while Al-Qadsiah will take on Al-Ahli the following day to decide the other final spot at the Hong Kong Hong Kong Stadium. The two semi-final winners will then clash in Saturday's final at the same venue. Al-Ahli's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy said the team is happy to have the chance to play in front of SAR fans and that he's not too worried about the city's unpredictable weather. 'It's first time for a lot of us," Mendy said. "But we are quite happy with the welcome we received. As I said, we're going to do everything to be ready in two days. 'Obviously, the weather is not great, but we can deal with that.' Al-Ittihad captain Karim Benzema said he doesn't feel under pressure in facing off against former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who's now with Al-Nassr. 'I don't know if it's a challenge – I'm not playing against him. It's not a Karim versus Cristiano match. It's more like Al-Nassr versus Al-Ittihad. We'll see what happens on the pitch,' said the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner. About 30 fans waited outside the hotel in the hope of meeting their football idols. One of them, Owen Yiu, who brought jerseys and photos of Benzema, said he has been a supporter of the French forward for more than a decade. 'I'm a Real Madrid fan. I'm a die-hard fan of him, so I hope I can see him here," he said. "He contributes a lot to the club, and the most impressive thing for me is his passion in the games. "We've won many Champions League titles under his leadership. He's forever my idol.' Ten-year-old Hayley carried a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey and said she would watch his match on TV. 'Ronaldo's gonna score a hat-trick, and I hope they win. Ronaldo's the [greatest of all time],' she said.

Arsenal capitalise on error to beat Man Utd 1-0

Arsenal capitalise on error to beat Man Utd 1-0 Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori headed home an early corner, aided by a weak challenge from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Photo: Reuters Manchester United's expensively-assembled new forward line drew a blank as Arsenal began their quest for the Premier League title by grinding out a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal after the Italian defender pounced on a huge mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. United have splashed out £200 million on new forwards to remedy a lack of punch in the final third. Despite promising debuts, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo failed to find the net, while substitute Benjamin Sesko could not make Arsenal pay for not pursuing their interest in the Slovenian. After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title since 2003/04. The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points as the visitors never got going as an attacking force. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. The new arrivals have at least lifted the mood around Old Trafford and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the performance of Ruben Amorim's men. Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on. However, United's good work was undone by a glaring error from Bayindir, who was deputising for the injured Andre Onana. The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori the simplest of tasks to head into an unguarded net. Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that came back off the post. Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the face of goal. Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before instead pursuing a move for Viktor Gyokeres as the solution to their need for a number nine. The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour mark by Kai Havertz. Sesko made his entrance moments later to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions. United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish as Mbeumo saw a powerful header expertly clawed out by Raya. But Arsenal held firm to keep pace with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who also won on the opening weekend of the campaign. (AFP)

French qualifier Atmane stuns Rune to reach Cincy semi

French qualifier Atmane stuns Rune to reach Cincy semi Atmane had won just one of four tour-level matches this year before arriving in Cincinnati. Photo: Reuters French qualifier Terence Atmane continued his sensational run at the ATP Cincinnati Masters on Thursday, stunning seventh-seeded Holger Rune 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals. Atmane, ranked 136th in the world, followed up his victory over world number four Taylor Fritz with a confident performance against Denmark's Rune to book a semi-final clash with world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner. "I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now," said the 23-year-old, adding that he had trouble sleeping after his big win over Fritz on Wednesday. "I was just trying to be myself on the court." Atmane, 23, is through to his first career Masters 1000 semi-final. He is the first qualifier to reach the Cincinnati last four in 10 years. The Frenchman had won just one of four tour-level matches this year before arriving in Cincinnati. In an earlier match, American Ben Shelton continued his strong run with a 6-4, 6-4 win over 22nd seed Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic to advance to the quarter-finals. It was a clutch performance for fifth-seeded Shelton, who was deadlocked at 4-4 in each of the two sets against Lehecka before breaking him each time and then serving to clinch the set. Shelton will face No 3 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany in a quarter-final matchup between two players who have yet dropped a set in the event. (AFP/Reuters)
