Keeping everyone guessing! NRL superstar Nathan Cleary refuses to rule out bombshell defection to rugby
NRL superstar Nathan Cleary hasn't ruled out eventually switching footy codes, with the NSW Blues halfback declaring he has an 'open mind.' Speaking ahead of game two in Perth on June 18, the immediate focus of the four-time premiership winner is lifting the Origin shield. And for now, adoring Penrith fans can breathe easy - the 27-year-old still has goals to tick off in rugby league. 'I think I've got enough challenges in front of me,' Cleary said from the Blues' camp at Leura in the NSW Blue Mountains. 'I feel like I want to squeeze the most out of my rugby league potential as I can. 'I've put so much into it and it's been my passion for so long, so to then get to this stage where I feel like I'm probably playing my best footy and in the best position to play my best footy in the coming years, I don't want to waste that. 'Going back to Penrith and the way we started the year, that's a challenge in itself and I've found motivation in that. You can't take winning for granted. '(In saying that)'I've got a pretty open mind....(it may happen) potentially down the track, but not at the moment.' Cleary is contracted until the end of 2027 - but earlier this month Wallabies legend Tim Horan publicly stated the Penrith star was 'quite keen' to switch codes. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt also felt the playmaker may 'want to spread his wings.' And with Cleary's girlfriend - Matildas star Mary Fowler - based in England with Manchester City, rumours of a move won't go away. In Perth, Cleary will reunite with former Panthers teammate Jarome Luai in the halves for Origin II after Eels skipper Mitch Moses was ruled out due to injury. Footy legend Peter Sterling has backed Luai to perform despite a limited preparation. 'You know what you're gonna get with Jarome,' he said.

NRL club mourns fan who died in tragic scenes at their home ground just moments before kick-off in milestone match
The Broncos are in mourning after a fan died at Suncorp Stadium moments before their clash against the Gold Coast Titans on June 7. Brisbane boss Dave Donaghy confirmed a club supporter suffered a heart attack in the stands as halfback Adam Reynolds prepared to run out for his 300th NRL game. Suncorp Stadium management and the Broncos provide on-site paramedics for all home games - but tragically, the man couldn't be revived. Relatives of the man informed the club of the news, and the Broncos will donate a jersey to be placed on his coffin. 'It was horribly sad,' Donaghy told News Corp. 'Our thoughts are with the family right now and of course we will do whatever we can to support them at this difficult time. 'The first responders on the night were remarkable, I couldn't imagine the job they had to do in difficult circumstances.' Meanwhile, Broncos star Pat Carrigan has backed teammate Ezra Mam following the controversial pivot's selection in the Queensland Origin squad. Mam recently returned to the NRL following a nine-game ban after pleading guilty to driving with drugs in his system and without a licence, following a head-on collision with an Uber last October. Many footy fans felt Mam should have been punished more severely. 'Look, he made a well-publicised mistake and he had to own that,' Carrigan said. 'We know what Ezra has more than well and truly done enough work on himself and he continues to do so. 'It (Origin camp) is a good opportunity for him, you get into these sort of environments and you get to learn from guys like Cameron Munster and Tommy Dearden, how they prepare and how they go about things. 'Those experiences will be good for the Broncos too. Ezra's done a lot of hard work outside of it and it's nice to see him get rewarded.' As 18th man, Mam could feature in game two in Perth on June 18 for the Maroons if there is a concussion-related injury.

Paul Kent drops bombshell about the mind-blowing revenge plot carried out by one of the NRL's most unassuming stars
Rugby league reporter Paul Kent has issued a bombshell revelation on why footy coach Ivan Cleary decided to return to Penrith. The four-time premiership-winning coach has previously opened up on the turn of events that led him to leave the Panthers back in 2015 after he was sacked by NRL legend Phil 'Gus' Gould. He and Gould have maintained a strained relationship since then, with the then-Panthers General Manager opting to wield the axe against the Premiership-winning coach because Cleary 'looked tired' and needed a break. But in a shocking revelation, Kent has claimed that Cleary returned to Penrith because he had 'unfinished business' before explaining that he went on to 'neck' Gould. During a Q&A session on Fanatics TV, Kent was asked: 'Can you tell us about the time Gus punted Ivan and his return?' 'I tell you what,' Kent said, appearing at first to choose his words carefully. 'Gus got rid of him [because] he said he was tired. Now my understanding of it was that Ivan had figured out that he probably didn't need Gus anymore. 'Gus recognised that. Gus moved him on. That's up for debate, you can look at that any way you like. 'Ivan went back and surprised a lot of people. I know he had a conversation with someone. 'They said: "Mate, why would you go back there after everything that had happened before?" 'And he said: "Because I've got unfinished business there." 'On the way through he's gone and necked Gus... so there's your mic drop.' In his book, Not Everything Counts But Everything Matters, which was released last year, Cleary paid tribute to Gould for his work at Penrith, but claimed their relationship had soured so much that it had ultimately culminated in his sacking in 2015. 'He did so much good for me, but he hurt me too,' the 54-year-old wrote, reflecting on his first spell in charge at the club. That fractious relationship has meant that Cleary has not spoken to Gus since he confronted Gould about his sacking when he rejoined the club in 2019. The 54-year-old ended his first spell at the Panthers with the club sitting rock bottom of the NRL. But after a two-year hiatus at the Wests Tigers, his return to the Panthers after Anthony Griffin's sacking surprised many, following his bitter exit. On his own motivations for rejoining Penrith, Cleary said that he gave the club an ultimatum that he would not take the reigns again unless Gould had zero no authority over him. 'I still feel so grateful that (former Penrith chairman) Dave O'Neill asked me for coffee that day and really put his own reputation on the line because it was controversial,' he wrote. 'When I came back initially, things weren't working out. 'Nathan wasn't playing well, I felt guilty about that. 'There was so much scrutiny and it certainly wasn't positive.' He added: 'I honestly didn't feel like I was the right man for the job, which was a lot to deal with because of how much I wanted to come back and how much it felt right.' Gould, meanwhile, left the club mid-way through 2019, and it was here that he denied that there had been a rift between the duo. 'Ivan's the right coach for the job going forward,' he said.
