Sahal Abdul Samad eyes return to Indian national team with Super Cup success

The Hindu30-04-2025
When Mohun Bagan Super Giant's Sahal Abdul Samad deftly scored the opening goal against Kerala Blasters FC in their Super Cup 2025 quarterfinal fixture, the midfielder's face had a sense of relief.
His arms went up as he stared into the sky and exhaled deeply before breaking into a smile. It was his first goal in almost eight months for his club.
'Finding the back of the net always brings happiness to a player. Especially, in a tough match, it's obviously an amazing feeling,' noted Sahal.
While MBSG secured a historic Indian Super League double (League Shield and Cup), Sahal had his own setbacks to overcome. Sporadic injuries took their toll on the 28-year-old and allowed him to play for only 816 minutes, which is the second-lowest for him after the 2019-2020 season (not including debut season).
However, rather than drowning in despondency, Sahal chose to take it on the chin and look ahead.

'Injuries are always part of football, and I always see it that way,' Sahal told Sportstar during an exclusive chat.
'The physios, the team medicals, they all supported me through this tough time. It was a lesson for me to be patient and keep working harder, and to do the necessary things outside of football,' he added.
Ever since he made his first appearance for KBFC back in 2018, Sahal has been deemed as one of the most remarkable talents the country has produced. He quickly became a mainstay for the Blasters, making 92 appearances for the club while also playing a major part in the 2021-22 campaign, where it reached the final before losing to Hyderabad FC on penalties.
His performances earned him a big-money move to Mohun Bagan in 2023, where he won the ISL League Shield twice and the ISL Cup and Durand Cup both once.
Speaking about the transition between the clubs, Sahal said that he was content with the decision that he took, while also explaining the differences that he experienced.
'Like every team, when I was playing there (KBFC), we were all fighting for the trophy. You know how close we were. But, when I came here (MBSG), there was a feeling that this is a champion team,' Sahal noted.
'The players around, the mentality, the management, it is all different here. I am happy about the step I took, which is a difficult step. But thankfully, I could handle it well,' he added.
With MBSG fielding essentially a reserve side for the ongoing Super Cup, Sahal, one of the few seniors in the side, said that he is trying his best to set an example.
'At first, it was a little bit difficult during training because we didn't know the junior players that well. But then, from the second and third day, they were all doing very well. And the best thing to motivate them is for us to work harder than they do,' Sahal explained..
'So, then, they will be eager to fight back. That is one thing I always tell them. Fight for everything. Give everything in your training, and success will come around,' he added.
National team and the future ahead
Since his national team call-up in 2019, Sahal has earned 39 caps, scoring three goals and assisting two in that period, while also lifting the Intercontinental Cup (2023) and two SAFF Championships (2021, 2023).
However, commenting on the national team's recent below-par performances, Sahal said that one of the main reasons could be the limited time the players get to gel with each other.
'I think it's the lack of time we have together. The training period is comparatively less. And then, it's all about mentality. Playing matches with different countries, top level players, all that makes a difference.

However, Sahal had words of praise for the current national team head coach, Manolo Marquez, and appreciated the boss's demand to play attractive football.
'We all know what he (Manolo) is capable of. Even when he was with Hyderabad, he won the trophy. He wants to keep playing beautiful football and fight for the ball. That's a huge plus point for our national team,' said Sahal.
Now, with India's AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier match against Hong Kong coming up in June and the camp likely to begin late in May, Sahal will hope to make his return to the squad after missing out on the last four matches.
The Super Cup, in which he awaits Manolo's FC Goa in the semifinal on Wednesday, could be just the platform Sahal needs to prove that he is back to his best and reclaim his spot in the national setup.

FC Goa bank on old and new in difficult ACL2 qualifier

Kolkata: On Wednesday's winner-takes-all match against Oman's Al-Seeb hinge FC Goa's hopes of being assured of competitive football from September to May. It explains why Manolo Marquez said 'most Indian teams would like to be in our position.' Sure, All India Football Federation (AIFF) has promised the Super Cup next month, and a league, but so far they remain only that –promises. FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez hopes the team will connect with the crowd like it did in the ISL semi-final against Bengaluru FC in Goa. (FC Goa on X) Win the Asian Champions League Two qualifier at home and FC Goa will join ISL league shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the main round of this new tier 2 competition. It will be the first time two Indian teams will be in the finals of the 29-team tournament that offers over $16m in prize money with $300,000 being assured for making the group stage. But we are getting ahead of the story. Al-Seeb won the 2022-23 AFC Cup, the competition that made way for this, have 11 players in the Oman squad that is in contention for a 2026 World Cup berth and are the reigning Oman Professional League champions. 'Good opponents, it will be difficult for us but for sure, it will be difficult for them,' said the FC Goa's head coach at the pre-match media conference in Goa on Tuesday. Al-Seeb, their Romanian coach Tita Valeriou said speaking through an interpreter, have one foreign player, in attack. FC Goa have six, three of them new though forward Javier Sivero has been in India for five seasons. 'The team is balanced if we play all six,' said Marquez. But we also need to finish the game in a strong way because extra-time is possible, he said. David Timor, the 35-year-old left-footed central midfielder with over 150 matches in La Liga, has replaced Carl McHugh. It was a tough decision but Goa decided to go for Timor's experience, Marquez had said earlier. Odei Onaindia wanted to end his career close to his home in Spain's Basque region so Pol Moreno, the central defender from Barcelona who was with Racing Santander last, has been bought. A first-time defensive pairing of Moreno, 31, and Sandesh Jhingan is likely though Marquez did not rule out playing three centre-backs. The other foreigners, Iker Guarrotxena, Borja Herrera and Dejan Drazic are among the 20 players Goa have retained. Both teams had a month to prepare. Awaiting formalities of being released from the post of India head coach meant Marquez began training on July 18, nearly one week after reaching Goa. Al-Seeb are in Goa after losing a one-off match to Al-Shabab, winners of the 2023-24 cup competition, on penalties. They also played a pre-season friendly tournament. Winners of the Super Cup last season, which gave them a half-berth in Asia, FC Goa were among the continent's elite in 2021. Clubs from Goa have had a good run in the AFC Cup with five-time I-League champions Dempo being the first Indian team to make the semi-final in 2008 beating a team from Oman en route. In1989, Salgaocar were the first team from the football-loving state to play in Asia when they participated in the Asian Club Cup in Muscat. 'It will be a hard game, especially because Goa FC will play in front of their fans and supporters,' said Valeriou whose team reached Goa three days ago to acclimatise. Marquez said he hoped the crowd would connect like it did in the ISL semi-final against Bengaluru FC. 'I never saw before in Goa….Now we are in the Asian competition. I hope that tomorrow they will come in a good number,' he said. This is Marquez's third season at FC Goa, a club he has said is the best in India. Temperature fluctuations due to rain, heat, humidity, and conducting training sessions through them, had him admitted to a hospital in his first season. Marquez still does not like the monsoon but a mid-week victory could make him hate it less.

Indian Super League side FC Goa return to Asian competition on Wednesday when they face Oman's Al Seeb Club in the preliminary stage of the AFC Champions League 2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao. This will be the Gaurs' first appearance in continental football since 2021, when they became the first Indian club to play in the AFC Champions League group stage. They qualified for this year's preliminary stage of the tournament by winning the Super Cup last season. However, they will have their task cut out against Al Seeb, one of Oman's top sides. Al Seeb have won the Oman Professional League in the last two seasons and made history in 2022 by winning the AFC Cup (now AFC Champions League Two) to become the only Omani club to do so. The match is a knockout fixture with the winner advancing to the group stage, and for the Gaurs, it's an opportunity to extend their continental journey in front of home fans. In their last Asian campaign, FC Goa earned three draws in a tough group featuring sides like Al Rayyan, Al Wahda, and Persepolis FC. The latter reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Al Hilal FC. (With inputs from PTI) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
