Request To Recuse Judges In New Diego Maradona Trial Denied

News186 hours ago
The request was denied, as the judges found the grounds of the request to be merely speculative and conjectural.
The request by the defence to recuse two of the judges appointed for the trial of the medical team of the late Diego Maradona over the Argentine legend's death was rejected on Wednesday.
Advocates of Maradona's personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, who is among seven people charged with culpable homicide over the World Cup-winner's passing, had requested for two members of the judicial panel to be removed from the case, over a fear of partiality.
The request was denied, as the judges found the grounds of the request to be merely speculative and conjectural.
The first trial into Maradona's 2020 death collapsed in May after one of the judges was sensationally revealed to have taken part in a clandestine documentary about the trial. A new three-judge bench was appointed in July to conduct a fresh trial. No date has yet been set for the new trial.
Maradona was the star man of the Argentine side that clinched the FIFA World Cup in the year 1986 as the icon from Dique Lujan etched his name in history books with his astounding showings that made the world acknowledge his magical abilities on the ball.
Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery. He died from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid builds up in the lungs, a few weeks after the medical procedure.
His medical team faced trial over the conditions of his home recovery, which prosecutors described as grossly negligent. They could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted of homicide with possible intent or for pursuing a course of action despite knowing it could lead to his death.

Rs 18,500 In Traffic Fines? Scooter Ridden By Karnataka Deputy CM In Viral Video Sparks Helmet And Fine Debate

Last Updated: A casual ride during an inspection turned controversial after it was revealed that the scooter used had 34 traffic violations and unpaid fines totalling Rs 18,500. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently took a ride on a gearless scooter during an inspection of the newly built loop at the Hebbal flyover in Bengaluru. He first rode the scooter alone and later with a pillion rider, catching the attention of locals and the media alike. However, what seemed like a casual ride soon turned controversial. Whose Scooter Was It? The scooter, with the registration number KA 04 JZ 2087, is registered under the name Babjan, a resident of RT Nagar, as per TOI. After a check by city traffic police, it was revealed that the scooter had 34 pending traffic violations amounting to Rs 18,500 in fines. The offences included riding without a helmet, talking on the phone while riding, signal jumping, and improper parking. What Did the Police Say? Police summoned the vehicle owner to the Hebbal traffic police station. On Wednesday, he paid Rs 1,000 on the spot and promised to clear the remaining Rs 17,500 soon, according to officials. As for Shivakumar, he was seen wearing a half-helmet, which, as per traffic rules, is not legally allowed. However, the police clarified that while such helmets are discouraged, riders are not currently being fined for them. Here's How the Social Media Reacted? Netizens quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the issue. Some questioned whether the Deputy CM even holds a valid driving licence. Others criticised the use of illegal half-helmets. The JD(S) party also shared the video online, mocking the situation and pointing out the unpaid fines. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Give Money Or Die In Jail': Mumbai Private Bank Employee Held In Rs 1 Crore Extortion Case

Dolly Kotak allegedly got help from three other private bank employees — Harsh Srivastava and Anant Ruia from HDFC Bank, and Jayesh Gaikwad from ICICI Bank. Charkop Police have arrested Dolly Kotak, an employee of a private bank, for trying to extort Rs 1 crore from her former partner, an IT professional. She has been accused of threatening, blackmailing, and illegally accessing his personal and financial information. The case began when the IT professional was falsely accused in a different matter and sent to jail. After he got bail, Kotak allegedly approached his sister at the court and demanded Rs 1 crore. In return, she said she would give a No Objection statement to help clear his name. She also threatened to defame him in the media if the money was not paid — a threat she later acted on. Despite the family refusing her demands, Kotak reportedly continued to call and message them. She even showed up at the victim's lawyer's office, demanding the full amount again. Later, the case took a serious turn. Kotak allegedly got help from three other private bank employees — Harsh Srivastava and Anant Ruia from HDFC Bank, and Jayesh Gaikwad from ICICI Bank. With their help, she is accused of accessing the victim's digital data without permission. This included linking her mobile number to his email, tracking his location, going through his private photos, and gaining access to his online bank accounts. After repeated complaints to police went unanswered, the victim finally approached the Borivali Magistrate. The court ordered the Charkop Police to file an FIR under Section 175(3) of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). A total of six people have been named in the case — Dolly Kotak, her brother Sagar Kotak, her friend Pramila Vaz, and the three bank employees. They have been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act, and the BNSS. As per FIR filed by complainant, he and arrested accused were in a relationship. This case highlights how personal and digital information can be misused to harass and extort victims, raising serious questions about data privacy and accountability within financial institutions. view comments First Published: August 07, 2025, 16:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
