Brewers complete 2nd series sweep of Dodgers for 10th straight win

Reuters2 days ago
July 20 - Isaac Collins delivered a go-ahead two-run single in a three-run sixth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers finished off a perfect run against the Los Angeles Dodgers this season with a 6-5 victory on Sunday.
Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio had a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, tying a career high set earlier this season. Left-hander Jose Quintana (7-3) gave up four runs on four hits while striking out five over six innings.
The Brewers' 10th consecutive victory also completed their second three-game sweep of the Dodgers in less than two weeks. Milwaukee's 6-0 record over Los Angeles is the first time one club swept the other in a season series.
The winning streak is the eighth that has gone double digits in Brewers franchise history and the first since an 11-game run in 2021.
The Dodgers pulled within a run in the ninth on an infield single from Dalton Rushing before Mookie Betts lined out against right-hander Abner Uribe, who recorded his second save.
Shohei Ohtani and Esteury Ruiz hit home runs for the Dodgers, who dropped to 2-10 since July 4. The Dodgers also lost their sixth consecutive home game in the stretch as they committed three errors.
Los Angeles left-hander Clayton Kershaw gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk over 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. All three Los Angeles errors came while Kershaw was on the mound. Lou Trivino (3-1) gave up two runs in a third of an inning.
The Dodgers jumped in front in the third inning when Andy Pages doubled and scored on a Rushing fly ball. With two outs, Mookie Betts singled and came home on Ohtani's 34th home run for a 3-0 lead.
The Brewers responded with three runs in the fourth that included an RBI single by Andruw Monasterio that was sandwiched by two Dodgers errors that allowed two runs to come across for Milwaukee.
Ruiz made the third Dodgers error, leading to Kershaw's departure in the fifth. Ruiz then hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-3 Dodgers lead.
Milwaukee sent seven batters to the plate to take the lead in the sixth. Eric Haase delivered an RBI single to tie the game and Isaac Collins hit a two-run single against right-hander Will Klein for a 6-4 advantage.

Matthew Boyd, Cubs blank Royals, ruin Rich Hill's return to majors

July 23 - Matthew Boyd pitched seven scoreless innings and the Chicago Cubs spoiled 45-year-old Rich Hill's return to the major leagues with a 6-0 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Boyd (11-3) extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings while allowing four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson and Matt Shaw each had two hits for the Cubs, who bounced back after losing the opener of the three-game series 12-4 on Monday. Hill (0-1) began his 21st season in the majors by giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits over five innings. The oldest active player in the major leagues, Hill walked two and had one strikeout. Kansas City committed three errors and was shut out for the 11th time this season. Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the second inning by capitalizing on a pair of miscues that put runners at the corners with one out. Shaw drove in a run with an infield single and the Cubs executed a double steal before Justin Turner scored from third on Hoerner's fielder's choice. Boyd retired the first 11 batters he faced before Maikel Garcia drew a two-out walk in the fourth inning. The Royals recorded their first hit on Nick Loftin's leadoff single in the fifth inning. Loftin advanced to third on Freddy Fermin's one-out single, and John Rave followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Boyd escaped the jam unscathed when Kyle Isbel lined out to Swanson, and the shortstop tagged Fermin out diving back to second base. Chicago tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth when Carson Kelly hit a two-out single and scored on Pete Crow-Armstrong's double. The Cubs added three runs in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Seiya Suzuki singled in a run and Kelly followed with a sacrifice fly. After Crow-Armstrong struck out, Chicago pushed another run across when Kyle Tucker swiped home as part of a double steal. Crow-Armstrong returned after missing one game with a bruised right knee and went 1-for-4 with an RBI. --Field Level Media

BREAKING NEWS Venus Williams, 45, reveals she is engaged to her actor boyfriend, 36

Venus Williams has confirmed that she is engaged to her actor boyfriend Andrea Preti after winning her first tennis match in over a year. Williams, 45, made the revelation on the tennis court, where she was interviewed after rolling back the years to beat Peyton Stearns in straight sets at the Citi Open in Washington D.C. It was her first match in 16 months and after a triumphant straight sets win, she confirmed to the crowd that in her time away from the game she had gotten engaged. 'My fiancé is here and he really encouraged me to keep playing,' she said to huge cheers and applause from the crowd. 'There were so many times where I just wanted to coast and kind of chill. Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? You guys don't know how much work goes into this, like it's 9 to 5 except you're running the whole time. 'Lifting weights and just like dying and then you repeat it the next day. So he encouraged me to get through this and it's wonderful to be here. He's never seen me play.' The news comes after Williams had surgery last year to remove fibroids from her uterus, which had impacted her across the course of her glittering career. Speaking on Monday after winning in the doubles, Williams revealed how her mindset around her game had changed after her health scare. 'Where I am at this year is so much different where I was at last year. It's night and day, being able to be here and prepare for the tournament as opposed to preparing for surgery a year ago,' she said. 'At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter if your health is not there. So, it definitely put it in perspective for me and maybe made it easier to make the decision to maybe come back out here and maybe play even freer.' Williams became the oldest player to earn a WTA singles victory since Martina Navratilova won a match at Wimbledon in 2004 as a 47-year-old with her victory on Tuesday.

WWE legend Ric Flair, 76, shares major update on skin cancer battle after surgery

Ric Flair has revealed he is skin cancer free once again after successfully overcoming his second diagnosis in the space of three years. The WWE legend, 76, sparked fears last month when he announced that he was battling the disease for a second time, before pulling out of a scheduled meet-and-greet in Mississippi roughly a week later. At the end of June, he told fans that surgery was 'coming up' while asking them to keep him in his prayers and sharing a photo of his stomach - which appeared to have a number of sutures in from previous treatment. And roughly three weeks later Flair has confirmed that op was a success, meaning he has beaten skin cancer again. The 'Nature Boy' took to Instagram to share a photo of himself sporting bandages on his forehead and left arm in a medical facility and wrote: 'Thank You Academic Alliance In Dermatology! I'm Now Cancer Free! WOOOOO!' Fans flooded the comments with tributes to Flair, including one who wrote: 'Thank God!!!! Diamonds are forever, and so is Ric Flair'. The WWE legend sparked fears last month by announcing he was battling the disease again 'To many more healthy years, Naitch!! WOOOO,' said another. 'Let's gooooo!! Keep Going Naitch,' posted a third. While one simply commented: 'WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!' Flair is widely considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time with his daughter, Charlotte, following in his footsteps. He first declared that he would be retiring in 2008 after losing to Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 24 but has continuously returned to WWE in rare appearances. In the years since, Flair has tragically suffered with a number of significant health issues. In 2017, he was in a coma for 11 days and reportedly near death after his intestine ruptured. Flair had been hospitalized with stomach pains and just a few hours later suffered early stages of kidney failure. He also came close to congestive heart failure as a result of alcohol abuse. Despite his family being told he only had a 20 percent chance of surviving, Flair eventually recovered after being placed into a medically induced coma and having an obstructed piece of bowel surgically removed. The 'Nature Boy' is widely considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time In 2019, he was rushed to the emergency room after reportedly suffering a 'very serious' medical emergency. He later underwent successful heart surgery at the Atlanta hospital. Boasting 16 WWE world championship titles, Flair cemented himself as one of the greatest icons of the ring. He is also the only WWE superstar to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame twice. He rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s with the WCW and the WWF (now the WWE), and he ultimately headlined WrestleMania VIII in 1992. Flair continued to wrestle well into his 60s and recently made an appearance at 2019's WrestleMania 35.
