India-Pakistan tensions: Pause largely holds, but guns still boom on social media

NEW DELHI: A day after India and Pakistan announced a stoppage of military activity, posts on the face-off continue to swamp social media.
Getting suddenly into 'pause' mode drew another groan of disappointment from the Right, especially in the manner it came about. Noted columnist Swapan Dasgupta, a member of BJP national executive with 1.1 million X followers, posted, "This ceasefire/'understanding' hasn't gone down well in India for (at least) 2 reasons: 1) It was peremptorily announced by Trump who suddenly appeared out of nowhere & pronounced his verdict 2) It is clear that Pakistan still sees terror strikes against Bharat as a virtuous act, even if it is regarded as an act of war."
Former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal, now chancellor of JNU, also expressed displeasure on X underlining that Pakistan had been let off.
Operation Sindoor
'Our job is to hit target, not to count body bags': Air Marshal Bharti on Op Sindoor
Precautionary blackout imposed across parts of Rajasthan, Punjab
'Indian Navy was in position to strike Karachi': Vice Admiral on Operation Sindoor
He stated, "At the international level the issue of
Pak involvement in terror
has been papered over and the burden has been put on both countries to exercise restraint and find a diplomatic solution." Sibal further said, "US claiming mediation has detracted from India's long held position against mediation. US is equating India and Pakistan. This has implications. Can US be trusted?"
Shefali Vaidya, convenor of the Indic Academy with nearly 800,000 followers, tweeted Saturday. "Don't understand the logic behind the sudden #ceasefire TBH, it feels like a bit anticlimactic to quit when you are clearly ahead, but I trust the leadership of my country to take the best decision under the circumstances."
After watching the Sunday DGMO briefing, though, she said, "Seeing the
DGMO press briefing
live makes my heart filled with pride. This is how a professional force behaves, provide solid proof, speak in measured tones, unlike the over-the-top Pakistani army guys claiming victory!"
Sadly, a 'dirty' online attack on foreign secretary Vikram Misri and his family also raged through Sunday. The right-wing trolling of the senior diplomat drew sharp denunciation far and wide. Even those who do not support govt on many issues came out in support of Misri.
Pollster Yashwant Deshmukh wrote on X, "We all stand with #VikramMisri. Those who are trolling him, are simply Pakistani stooges living in India. If you are playing in enemy hands, you are a traitor hired by the enemy. That's the bottom line. These trolls should be named, shamed and if possible tried in the court."
Defence analyst Sushant Sareen posted, "Disgusting demented dredges of humanity. Vikram Misri is one of the finest officers of IFS and to target his family is the most low (sic) blow anyone can strike. Vile creatures who do this."

PM Modi to inaugurate world's highest railway bridge in Jammu & Kashmir on June 6

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world's highest railway bridge—the Chenab Bridge—in Jammu and Kashmir on June 6, marking a historic moment for India's infrastructure. Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister in charge of the Prime Minister's Office, confirmed the development on Tuesday and said, 'PM Modi will inaugurate the Chenab Bridge on June 6, which [is] billed to be a proud moment for India and Jammu and Kashmir.' The Chenab railway bridge, built across the River Chenab, is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), a key connectivity project in the region. Dr Singh said the bridge has been constructed to withstand nature's toughest tests and is set to be an engineering marvel. In his first visit to the Union Territory following Operation Sindoor, the Prime Minister will also flag off the Vande Bharat train between Katra and Kashmir. This will be the first Vande Bharat service in the region, and preparations are in full swing to ensure a smooth launch. Modi is also scheduled to address a public rally in Katra and inspect the Chenab Bridge during his visit. The original inauguration was planned for April 25 but had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. The upcoming event is seen as part of a larger celebration of Narendra Modi's 11 years as Prime Minister, which will be marked on June 9. According to sources, the government is preparing for a nationwide outreach campaign to highlight key achievements during his tenure. Meanwhile, the local administration in Katra is working closely with Indian Railways to put all security and logistical arrangements in place ahead of the Prime Minister's visit.

High drama, ruckus mars meet as AAP-BJP councillors clash over water crisis, terminated staff

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) House meeting held on Tuesday turned chaotic as intense arguments broke out between the councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The meeting remained entangled in disruptions and protests, with major issues like the city's water crisis, the termination of 664 tube well operators, and the alleged Rs 100-crore community centre scam dominating discussions. The session, which started with noise and slogan-shouting, got derailed early, with the approval of previous minutes and the Zero Hour session overlapping amid continuous disruptions. Post-lunch, discussions turned even more heated when Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla directly brought forth a proposal to grant temporary water connections to residents outside the Lal Dora (revenue) limits of 22 villages. This move drew strong objections from AAP councillors, who accused the Mayor of skipping the agenda order, leading to a noisy altercation with the BJP members. The discussion in the House largely revolved around water scarcity, poor quality supply, and the controversial dismissal of 664 tube well operators. AAP councillor Suman Sharma from Mauli Jagran raised concerns about the supply of contaminated water in her ward, even bringing a visibly dirty water bottle to the House as evidence. She faced counter arguments from BJP councillors including Sarbjit Kaur and nominated councillor Geeta Chauhan, who questioned the number of water tankers sent to Sharma's ward. During the same debate, Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh Gabi questioned Rs 30 crore consultancy fee paid under the city's ambitious 24×7 water supply project, terming it 'a gross misuse of public money' and demanded the project be scrapped and investigated by vigilance authorities. Gabi also lashed out at the civic body for terminating tube well operators, stating that these employees were not just workers but custodians of clean water for over 14 lakh residents. 'If one operator is responsible for starting three tube wells, and something is mixed into the water during that time, who will be held accountable — the Mayor or the officials,' he asked. Banner protests, cheque controversy, and ignored allegations At the start of the session, tensions escalated further when Congress and AAP councillors brandished photocopies of cheques worth Rs 92 crore and Rs 238 crore, respectively, which they alleged were promised grants that have yet to be received by the MC. This was in stark contrast to the last session, when BJP councillors had distributed sweets to celebrate the UT Administrator's announcement of fund approvals. While the Congress raised the funding issue, the AAP councillors held up banners demanding action on the alleged scam in free community centre bookings, a matter they had previously highlighted in a press conference on June 1. However, the topic saw no substantial discussion beyond morning protests, despite anticipation of major revelations. Commissioner's dissent on reinstating tube well operators During the confirmation of previous meeting minutes, BJP councillor Kanwarjit Singh Rana raised the issue of reinstating the 664 terminated tube well operators. Many councillors supported the demand, including the Mayor. However, Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar formally recorded his dissent note, citing the MC's current financial crisis and stating that the final decision rests with the administration, not the elected body. 'No one is above the law,' he said. Clashes within and between parties The already tense atmosphere worsened when BJP councillors Kanwarjit Singh Rana and Dilip Sharma got into a heated argument on the House floor over the timing of discussions related to the tube well operator documents. The scuffle forced the Mayor to call a five-minute break just before 1 pm to avoid further embarrassment. Later, another confrontation occurred between AAP councillor Ramchandra Yadav and BJP's Kanwarjit Rana over the RFP for community centres. The verbal spat nearly turned physical, but fellow councillors intervened to de-escalate the situation. AAP stages walkout AAP councillor Yogesh Dhingra staged a walkout in protest, claiming that AAP members were intentionally denied a chance to speak during the proceedings. The AAP's Chandigarh unit president Vijaypal Singh issued a strong statement, alleging that the BJP was running the House like a 'dictatorship,' deliberately suppressing public interest issues and shielding a Rs 100 crore scam related to community center bookings. 'This is not just about documents or procedures. This is about transparency, accountability, and the voice of the people,' he said, asserting that AAP will continue to raise issues affecting the poor and marginalized. Agenda on community centre prices deferred The agenda on the policy guidelines for management of the community centres and dharamshalas in Chandigarh, was deferred. The Mayor stated that a survey of the facilities across all community centres in Chandigarh will be done, after which the prices of these facilities and other policy guidelines shall be decided. The matter is now expected to come up in the next House meeting.

Multi-party delegation meets Jaishankar after 4-nation tour exposing Pak's support to terrorism

The delegation led by BJP leader Baijayant Panda met Jaishankar at his office here after the key diplomatic tour and presented their report. New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met members of a multi-party delegation and received feedback from them on how they exposed Pakistan in various countries over its support to terrorism. In these countries, the delegation members met foreign dignitaries and Indian diaspora during a series of meetings and exposed Pakistan's support to terrorism in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor. 'It was a very good meeting, and we gave External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar our feedback. All members of the delegation provided their inputs and shared their views with him,' said delegation member Harsh V Shringla, a former foreign secretary. Asked what the minister told them, he said, 'He (Jaishankar) told us that our objectives were fulfilled and congratulated the delegation and its leader'. Panda told reporters that their visit abroad was successful where they could explain India's 'new normal' against Pakistan over terrorism. He said the delegation members were united and gave a very strong message to the countries they travelled. 'A successful four-nation tour — Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Algeria. All four countries have taken clear steps against terrorism and understand India's principled stand…,' he said in a post on X. Panda said the countries they visited understand India and its history has been such that 'we don't need to give any justification'. 'We are a country of non-violence and have provided shelter to people from several countries. We had wanted to give the message of India and the new normal that we will retaliate terrorist violence. We ave also imposed economic sanctions and our goal is that Pakistan should stop its policy of supporting terrorism,' he told reporters. Panda also said that the countries they visited are supporting India, not just in economic growth but also against terrorism. Other delegation members who met the external affairs minister included former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma and Satnam Singh Sandhu. Other members of the eight-member delegation included Nishikant Dubey and Asaduddin Owaisi. PTI SKC SKC KVK KVK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
