Mutiara Line LRT issues resolved, work starts soon
GEORGE TOWN: All outstanding issues between the federal government and the Penang government regarding the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) have been resolved amicably.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said he had chaired the meeting with Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow at his ministry in Putrajaya last month and resolved outstanding issues, including the release letter from the state government.
'Physical work will begin shortly, in one or two months. So we ask them (the state government) to ensure there is a traffic diversion plan when piling work and construction begins to ensure the project doesn't have a negative impact on road congestion,' he said during a media conference after ending his one-day working visit to Penang today.
On Rapid Penang On-Demand service by Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd (Rapid Bus), he said that the service, which began in phases from August 2024, was running smoothly with 50 vans covering 13 zones in Penang - seven on the island and six in Seberang Perai.
'The average daily users stand at 1,944 people, with an average of 39 passengers per van daily and an average travel time of 16 minutes and a waiting time of 19 minutes,' he said.
He added that there were 150 additional drivers to handle the vans to ensure smooth operations and that passengers would enjoy a fare of RM1 per trip.

The latest investment is poised to expand KTC's existing operational base by 40 percent, while revenue is expected to surge by extra 50 percent. This strategic move will drive the KTC's annual turnover to the tune of RM1.5 billion to RM1.6 billion, further solidifying its position as a leading company in Sabah, East Malaysia and Borneo Island. KTC Executive Director Datuk Dexter Lau said this strategic investment marks a significant milestone in the group's long-term growth strategy and is set to support its expansions over the next five years. The newly acquired land is situated in a high-growth industrial zone and will serve as the foundation for KTC's future developments in warehousing, logistics infrastructure, transportation fleet, and operational facilities. This expansion is expected to enhance operational efficiency, streamline supply chain capabilities, and further strengthen the Group's presence in both existing and new markets across Malaysia. The KTC Industrial Park is set to become one of the largest FMCG distribution centres in the region, designed to efficiently serve markets across Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Indonesia. 'This investment is a strategic move that position us for sustainable growth. As we continue to upscale our operations, this land will provide the space and infrastructure needed to meet growing demand to serve our business partners effectively,' said Lau. He emphasized that the acquisition is aligned with KTC's mission to build long-term value through operational excellence and strategic foresight. The new KTC Industrial Park will significantly enhance the Group's logistics capabilities, enabling it to meet the increasing demand for FMCG products across multiple regions. 'This development not only reflects our commitment to operational excellence and regional economic growth, but is also expected to create job opportunities and drive the expansion of a broader supply chain ecosystem in East Malaysia and surrounding regions.' Lau also revealed KTC has already surpassed RM1 billion in revenue as of June this year, and is continuing on a strong growth trajectory. He shared that KTC's total operational area currently spans 500,000 square feet. With the development of the KTC Industrial Park on the newly acquired 15-acre land in KKIP, the Group's operational base will increase significantly by 40 percent, while its revenue is projected to grow to RM1.5 billion to RM1.6 billion. 'We will begin construction of the KTC Industrial Park in KKIP as soon as possible, with a total investment of RM100 million. 'The industrial park is expected to create 500 new jobs. We will prioritize on hiring locals from disadvantaged backgrounds to support the government's poverty eradication efforts.' Review policies surrounding wealth disparity, says academic
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Alysha Edward, FMT Text Size: Tricia Yeoh of University of Nottingham Malaysia's School of Politics and International Relations urged policymakers to place affordability and accessibility at the heart of future housing and transportation reforms. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: An academic has urged the government to review its policies on housing and vehicle affordability, arguing that Malaysia's growing household debt is symptomatic of a deeper systemic inequality. Tricia Yeoh of University of Nottingham Malaysia's School of Politics and International Relations said Malaysia's household debt to gross domestic product ratio stands at 69.3%, one of the highest in the Asia-Pacific region. Advertisement She said more alarming is the composition of this debt. 'The bulk of it comes from loans such as housing and motor vehicle loans,' she said during a recording of BBC World Questions at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre yesterday. 'This should prompt us to relook government policy, especially since the price of vehicles in Malaysia is highly inflated.' She also highlighted a lack of affordable housing, especially in the Klang Valley, as a pressing issue for working-class Malaysians trapped in financial precarity. While cautioning against one-size-fits-all solutions, she said that any meaningful conversation about wealth inequality must address deeper structural problems, including stagnant wages and inadequate retirement savings. 'We're becoming an ageing society, yet about 70% of Malaysians can't even raise RM1,000 in an emergency. That's just US$200,' she said. 'These aren't just statistics. They speak to the very real insecurity Malaysians feel about their future.' Yeoh's comments reflect data showing that the richest 10% of the population take home nearly 40% of the country's income, while the poorest 10% survive on just 1.7%. Yeoh said that tackling this imbalance would require more than just tax tweaks or subsidy reforms. She urged policymakers to place affordability and accessibility at the heart of future housing and transportation reforms. 'We need to ask ourselves, why do Malaysians need to go into debt just to be mobile or have a roof over their heads?' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
