
British Open schedule on Saturday to be adjusted because of loyalist parade
Some 77 bands, and an estimated 2,000 people from the Portrush Sons of Ulster organisation, are expected to march through the town in Northern Ireland that is hosting golf's oldest major championship.
The parade is scheduled to start at 8.30 pm local time — around the same time that thousands of spectators might be leaving the property at Royal Portrush following the third round of the Open Championship.
Amid the potential for logistical issues, the R&A which organises the British Open, is adjusting its schedule for Saturday.
'We've worked really collaboratively with the organisers and across multiple agency groups to ensure primarily that both events can run as seamlessly as possible,' R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said on Wednesday.
'We're making a slight tweak to tee times to try and finish — it's not dramatic. It'll be 15 minutes or so earlier,' he added.
More than 275,000 spectators are expected to attend the Open across this week.

The Belfast Telegraph reported last week the Portrush Sons of Ulster group was offered 20,000 pounds (USD 27,000) by the R&A to postpone the parade, and that the offer was rejected.
When that was put to Darbon, he said the R&A was making contributions to support 'the seamless operation of both events.' 'We try and be good citizens in the communities in which we operate when we come to town,' he said.
Darbon said he had no extra security concerns around Saturday evening, adding the safety of spectators was 'always a prime consideration.'
Price hikes
It's a big week for Portrush and its local businesses — and it appears some have been attempting to take full advantage.
The prices of meals at some of the town's popular restaurants shot up, leading to criticism and complaints from visitors, The Guardian newspaper reported. According to the paper, the price of a burger at Ramore Wine Bar rose from 7.95 pounds (USD 10.65) to 17.95 pounds (USD 24).
The Ramore Restaurant Group, which owns that bar and others, including the well-known Harbour Bar, attributed the price hikes to extra staff being needed for a busy Open week, but said menus have been 'revised and adjusted' in the wake of the complaints.

It was not quite the glorious homecoming Rory McIlroy had dared to dream of on his return to Royal Portrush, but it felt like redemption for Northern Ireland's favourite sporting son after the heartbreak of six years ago. Five-time major champion McIlroy produced a few magical moments over four days for the thousands who descended on the Antrim coast hoping to roar him to British Open glory. In the end, the Northern Irishman fell short, however, finishing tied seventh, seven strokes behind champion Scottie Scheffler. After the gloom of missing the cut in 2019 when the Open returned to the land of his birth for the first time since 1951, though, it felt like a celebration for the 36-year-old who arrived at the course wearing his Masters green jacket. 'I tried as best as I could to keep my emotions in check, especially walking up the last there and that reception,' said McIlroy, who briefly threatened to make a charge on Sunday before a double-bogey on the 10th ended his hopes. COURSE RECORD It will be a few years before golf's oldest major returns to Royal Portrush, though, where McIlroy shot a course record 61 as a teenager. 'Hopefully, I'll have one or two Opens left here, if the R&A decide to keep coming back, probably one while I'm still competitive and another one while I'm more grey than I already am. 'I think Portrush has quickly turned into one of the best two or three venues that The Open goes to,' McIlroy added. 'Talk to every player this week, they won't say one bad thing about the golf course.' McIlroy, firing again after a post-Augusta slump, concedes that world number one Scheffler has moved to a different level. 'He is the bar that we're all trying to get to,' he said. 'In a historical context, you could argue that there's only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run like the one that Scottie's been on here for the last 24 to 36 months. Incredibly impressive.' McIlroy said he would scale back slightly after the Open to focus on this year's Ryder Cup in New York. 'I don't want to play too much leading up to that because I want to be fresh,' he said. 'I'll reflect on what's already been a good year and start to get myself ready for that run-up.'

This British Open was never in doubt as golf's No. 1 player delivered another dominant performance to win his second major this year and grab the third leg of the career Grand Slam. Scheffler began with a shot into 10 inches for birdie. One hour into the final round on Sunday, his lead already was seven shots and no one got closer than four the rest of the way at Royal Portrush. He closed with a 3-under 68 for a four-shot victory, sending him to the U.S. Open next year with a chance to make it a clean sweep of golf's biggest titles. Scheffler won the Masters by three shots in 2022 and by four shots last year. He won the PGA Championship by five shots in May. Scheffler finished at 17-under 267 for his fourth victory of the year. He's the first player in the last century to win his first four majors by at least three shots. He has won 20 times worldwide since February 2022, and this was the 11th straight time he turned a 54-hole lead into a victory. Harris English was second after a 66. Can't wait to get home and celebrate: Scheffler after winning maiden British Open title
Scottie Scheffler created waves before the British Open when he questioned the meaning of his success in a press conference, repeatedly asking what the point was of his relentless pursuit of golfing glory. After cruising to a four-shot victory at Royal Portrush on Sunday, the world number one American pumped his fists in celebration. 'Thanks to the fans for all the support,' Scheffler said after lifting the Claret Jug. 'I know I wasn't the fan favourite today, so I appreciate you guys coming out to support. Overall, it's been a great week. The fan support was tremendous. It was a really fun week to be able to play in front of such a great crowd.' Scheffler's son Bennett fell over as he tried to run to his dad on the green before the British Open champion scooped him up and held him alongside the trophy. 'Thanks to my wife and son - I love you very much and can't wait to get home and celebrate,' Scheffler said. 'This is not a fulfilling life,' he said. 'It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart,' the 29-year-old said. Scheffler has dominated golf since 2022. He won the Masters in 2022 and 2024, and the Olympic gold medal last year, as whispers in golf have likened his dominance to that of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods in his prime. His rivals are in no doubt about his quality. 'I played with him the first two days, and honestly, I thought he was going to birdie every hole,' 2019 Portrush Open champion Shane Lowry said. 'It was incredible to watch.' American Bryson DeChambeau, the twice U.S. Open champion who finished tied 10th at Portrush, played against Scheffler many times during their youth. 'I knew at college he was going to be a good player, but not this good. He's setting a benchmark we all want to get to,' DeChambeau said. 'Scottie's in a league of his own right now. He's incredible. He really is. 'I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here's Scottie sort of taking that throne.'
