Athens mayor clashes with Israel ambassador over anti-Semitic graffiti
Athens mayor Haris Doukas was accused of not acting against 'organised minorities' who put up anti-Jewish graffiti.
ATHENS – The mayor of Athens became embroiled in a war of words on Aug 3 with the Israeli ambassador to Greece, who accused city authorities of not doing enough to clean up anti-Semitic graffiti.
Ambassador Noam Katz told the Kathimerini daily in comments published on Aug 3 that Israeli tourists felt 'uncomfortable' in Athens because the mayor, Dr Haris Doukas, does not act against 'organised minorities' who put up anti-Jewish graffiti.
Dr Doukas responded within hours on X: 'We have proved our strong opposition to violence and racism and we do not take lessons in democracy from those who kill civilians.'
The Socialist Pasok party mayor added: 'Athens, capital of a democratic country, fully respects its visitors and supports the right of free expression of its citizens.
'It is revolting that the ambassador concentrates on graffiti (that is clearly wiped off) while an unprecedented genocide is taking place in Gaza.'
Greece, as well as several other European nations, has seen a number of left-wing-led pro-Palestinian demonstrations. A cruise ship carrying Israeli tourists around the Greek islands was greeted by demonstrations in several ports.
While following a pro-Arab policy for several decades, Greece has since 2010 stepped up links with Israel, notably on security and energy.

started in October 2023 , with the Hamas attack on Israel, a growing number of Israelis have visited Greece and started investing in its property market.
According to the Athens mayor, the number of Israelis who have secured Greek resident permits by buying property increased by 90 per cent in 2024. AFP

Currently, Brazil lacks a complete mapping of its mineral wealth, Lula said, adding that his government would start this process by setting up the national council on mineral materials and standards. France to tighten visa rules for Algerian diplomats as deportation dispute escalates

In a letter to his Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, which was seen by Reuters, Macron said the growing difficulties that France is encountering in terms of migration and security with Algeria required a tougher stance against the former French colony. Macron requested that Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot officially notify Algeria of the suspension of a 2013 agreement that exempted diplomatic and official passport holders from visa requirements. He also requested that France's interior minister ask countries in the Schengen zone -- which allow passport-free travel between their borders -- to help France apply the tighter visa policy, notably by consulting France for the issuance of short-stay visas for the Algerian officials in question and the passports covered by the 2013 agreement. "France must be strong and command respect. It can only receive this from its partners if it shows them the respect it demands from them. This basic rule also applies to Algeria," Macron said. Ties between Paris and Algiers have deteriorated since France in July 2024 recognised Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, which Rabat wants the international community to recognise as Moroccan.
