'Don't accept cool drink': Mkhwanazi warns new constables against bribes

Over 1,900 newly trained police constables are graduating from police academies across the country on Friday.
In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), a total of 145 new police constables will be hitting the ground running.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, officiated the passing out parade at the Ulundi SAPS Academy.
A total of 109 women and 36 men all graduated and completed their six-month Introductory Police Development Learning Programme and were all declared competent.
A totalof 145 newly trained constables graduated on Friday.

Mkhwanazi, who is admired for his no-nonsense stance on crime, warned police officers on parade against corruption and participating in any act of lawlessness
He said that the role of a police officer comes with responsibilities and authority, and warned that criminals would want to befriend police officers for protection.
'Some will be happy for you to a point of offering you bribes, which they will refer to as a cold drink; do not accept such. Love your country, respect the people you serve, and respect the oath of office you took when you joined the police. Always remember to protect the lives of the residents of South Africa as well as your life,' Mkhwanazi said.
Speaking at the Bhisho SAPS Academy in the Eastern Cape, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, where 849 constables graduated, he urged the new constables to be ready to work hard.
'You are no longer recruits, you are police officers of the Republic of South Africa. The work ahead of you is as demanding as it is noble. Crime in our country is ruthless. Criminals have no regard for the law, for life, or for the well-being of communities. You are now entrusted to be the shield between law-abiding citizens and those who wish them harm. Officers on parade, as you leave the corridors of this academy to go to the coalface of crime fighting, protect yourself to protect others; your safety is paramount. A fallen officer cannot serve the community. Remain vigilant, follow your training, and operate as a team,' Masemola said.

Saturday, 16 August 2025, marked 13 years since 34 mineworkers were gunned down by police in what is now remembered as the Marikana massacre. 'Instead of dialogue and dignity, they were met with the barrels of guns in full view of the world,' the EFF said in a statement. 'The workers of Marikana died in vain because their demands remain unmet, their killers remain unpunished, and the system that murdered them remains firmly in place.' Providing context to his involvement with Citydev Construction, Zungu gave a nuanced account: 'In 2017, we were introduced to this private company by the then Ward Councillor of Ward 122, as they were undertaking bond housing in Lehae. I was the chairperson of the business forum at the time. Initially, I supplied materials for them and was later appointed as a social facilitator.' Zungu explained: 'We worked very well until I was elected Ward Councillor of 122 after the previous councillor passed away. I then resigned from the business forum to focus on my councillorship. Politics within the ANC then kicked in.' He concluded with a warning about internal party conflict: 'In short, all this has been a fabrication and is meant to tarnish my name from members within the ANC.' Fisherman faces life in prison for brutal attack on wife amid gender-based violence crisis

Image: File An accused wife abuser who is alleged to have violently attacked his wife on their ninth wedding anniversary, and faces possible life imprisonment, will remain behind bars after his second attempt for bail was denied by the Western Cape High Court. The 37-year-old father of four was a fisherman in Mossel Bay up until his incarceration in May last year and faces a charge of attempted murder. He sought to appeal against his bail application, which was heard and denied in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court. The lower court found that the man would endanger the life of the complainant, and it was not in the interests of justice to have him released. According to court documents, on May 18, last year, the couple had celebrated their anniversary, but the occasion turned sombre when the man accused his wife of infidelity and began beating her with his fists. This was then followed by him telling his wife to undress, and after she fell to the ground, he proceeded to hit her multiple times with a hammer all over her body. Video Player is loading. During his second bail hearing, the man, adamant that he could only afford R300 bail, denied the charges against him and claimed that he caught his wife in bed with another person. The man is expected to go on trial on November 7. The court documents read: 'The State led evidence that the appellant had assaulted the complainant, including by striking her with a hammer so hard that her arm was broken. The medical evidence suggested that the injuries were life-threatening, and photographs put up by the State revealed severe harm to the complainant's face and body. 'Not only this, but evidence was led to show that he had previously assaulted the complainant, and that the complainant had been raped by the appellant's brother in the presence of the appellant and thereafter he had asked the complainant to withdraw charges against his brother. The State also adduced evidence that the complainant is very afraid of the appellant.' In arriving at his decision, Judge Darryl Cooke at the high court said that while he considered the possibility of imposing bail conditions, he was not convinced that this would sufficiently reduce the risk of harm to the complainant. This was also weighed against the man's disposition to violence, as is evident from his past conduct, and the prevalence of gender-based violence in South Africa. Chief Specialist Scientist at the South African Medical Research Council, Professor Naeemah Abrahams, cited statistics that in South Africa, since 2009, three women are killed by an intimate partner per day. Commenting on gender-based violence and reforms needed, Professor Amanda Gouws previously said South Africa had one of the best national gender machineries globally, but this has since been crippled, and there is currently no coherent, active women's or feminist movement. 'Activism now takes the form of sporadic issue-driven action, such as the campaigns by #TotalShutDown and #EndRapeCulture. While this type of activism is laudable, it does not sustain pressure on the government for action. 'There is thus no simple suggestion for how to reduce gender-based violence. All interventions are contextual and political and need to address different dimensions of a multi-dimensional problem,' Professor Gouws had said.
