Spain's Aitana Bonmati hospitalised with viral meningitis days before Euros
The 27-year-old missed Friday's 3-1 win over Japan in a friendly as Spain continued building up to their first Group B match against Portugal on July 3.
Bonmati shared a picture of herself watching the match from a hospital bed in an Instagram story.
'The doctors say that it is controlled. Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled,' Montse Tome, Spain's head coach, told reporters after the win in Leganes.
'[Aitana will be admitted and there are no deadlines yet to know for how long (she will be absent). More Trending
Barcelona's two-times Ballon d'Or winner Bonmati, who also won the FIFA Women's Player of the Year award for 2023 and 2024, has scored 30 goals for Spain in 78 appearances, playing a key role as they won the Women's World Cup in 2023 and the Women's Nations League last year.
'Aitana, for us, is a very important player. We'll wait for her as long as we can,' Tome added.
Spain, who also have Belgium and Italy in their group, have never made it to the final of the continental championship, reaching the semi-finals only once in 1997.

Work is set to start this summer at Power Court and there are plans for the club to move in for the 2028–29 season. Stunning designs show a "halo" floodlight system that hangs above the pitch, a state-of-the-art hospitality section and the Hatters also want it to be able to host concerts. The move will see Luton leave the 12,000-seater Kenilworth Road, which has been their home since 1905. It comes despite the club suffering back-to-back relegations to League One from the Premier League. Luton chief Gary Sweet said: "This is a transformative opportunity for the Club, helping us realise our ambitions to be a Premier League club again one day. 'We are united with the supporters on the need for a new stadium to move our Luton Town forward and we are delighted to be moving into this exciting construction phase. 'Importantly, this new stadium project roots us in our community, bringing jobs and investment as part of the wider regeneration of the area. 'We will collaborate closely with them to ensure the stadium reflects the spirit and needs of the community. Leaked footage shows shocking state of Barcelona's Nou Camp as club 'consider delaying new stadium opening' 'It has been a long road to this point, but we are so excited at the prospect of welcoming our supporters to Power Court in the near future and the ability to extend our support base and enhance our unique match-day experience.' The Power Court Stadium is Limak's first job in the UK. They already have projects across 14 other countries and have previously built stadiums in Turkey. Limak claim they have been approached by other English sides about renovating other grounds. Meanwhile, Barca's Camp Nou modernisation has been delayed again and they risk starting another season away from their spiritual home.

Chelsea 'target £43m-rated Barcelona star' to fill in for Levi Colwill after centre back suffered an ACL injury in pre-season training
Chelsea are reportedly ready to make a move to replace Levi Colwill, after the England international suffered a devastating ACL injury. The 22-year-old defender, fresh from a breakthrough season in which he made 43 appearances across all competitions, sustained the injury during the Blues' first training session back in pre-season. Colwill has since undergone successful surgery and begun his rehabilitation, but his absence leaves a huge gap in Enzo Maresca 's defensive options. Indeed, Chelsea have set their sights on Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, according to local outlet Football Espana. It is believed that Chelsea would be willing to pay £43million for the 26-year-old Uruguay international. There is hope at Stamford Bridge that this fee would be enough to get a deal over the line, in light of Barcelona's precarious financial situation. The 6ft 2in centre back has been a mainstay at the Nou Camp since his arrival from Boston River in 2018, making 175 appearances for the Catalan giants and winning two La Liga titles. Araujo penned a long-term contract extension in January until 2031, but Barcelona's financial constraints could force them to listen to offers. Daily Mail Sport understands that Chelsea are still considering whether they absolutely need to make a move for a central defender this month. Josh Acheampong was used as the left-sided centre back in their friendly against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday. It is an important position under Maresca as that player is expected to shuffle across when the left back inverts into midfield. Acheampong, 19, performed well, with Aaron Anselmino, 20, replacing him late on. Jorrel Hato can also be used as a left-sided centre back as well as a left back, which is where the £37m signing from Ajax played on Friday after replacing Cucurella at half-time.

Lioness Lucy and her defeated Euros opponent have a ball... in matching her-and-hers bikinis
Two weeks ago Lucy Bronze and Ona Batlle were flying into each other with tackles as the Lionesses beat Spain in the Euros. Now they're still close marking – but having a splashing time together on holiday in Formentera, the smallest Balearic isle. Wearing matching string brown bikinis, Chelsea right-back Lucy, 33, and Barcelona defender Ona, 26, tanned on a motorboat. Then they hopped on a paddleboard before going snorkelling, finally hosing each other down in the 31C Mediterranean heat. The pair, who played together for Barcelona in the 2023-24 season, are thought to have been enjoying the isle for several days. Last week Lucy shared images on Instagram of two iced coffees in a restaurant, tagging Ona, plus idyllic beaches and moped rides. She captioned the pictures 'And breathe'. Lucy, called 'the world's best player' by ex-England defender Phil Neville, consoled Ona on the pitch in Basel as teammates celebrated their penalty shoot-out win. Now they're still close marking – but having a splashing time together on holiday (pictured) in Formentera, the smallest Balearic isle It was a reversal of fortunes from 2023, when Spain beat England in the World Cup Final and Ona comforted tearful Lucy. Lucy, who grew up in Northumberland, has a Portuguese father and speaks Spanish, French and Portuguese. Her close friendship with Ona continued when she moved to Chelsea from Barcelona last summer. They posted photos from Disneyland Paris at Christmas and holidayed again in June before the Euros. Ona shared shots of them on a lilo and dressing for dinner.
