Spain's Aitana Bonmati hospitalised with viral meningitis days before Euros
The 27-year-old missed Friday's 3-1 win over Japan in a friendly as Spain continued building up to their first Group B match against Portugal on July 3.
Bonmati shared a picture of herself watching the match from a hospital bed in an Instagram story.
'The doctors say that it is controlled. Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled,' Montse Tome, Spain's head coach, told reporters after the win in Leganes.

Barcelona's two-times Ballon d'Or winner Bonmati, who also won the FIFA Women's Player of the Year award for 2023 and 2024, has scored 30 goals for Spain in 78 appearances, playing a key role as they won the Women's World Cup in 2023 and the Women's Nations League last year.
'Aitana, for us, is a very important player. We'll wait for her as long as we can,' Tome added.
Spain, who also have Belgium and Italy in their group, have never made it to the final of the continental championship, reaching the semi-finals only once in 1997.

Chelsea are reportedly ready to make a move to replace Levi Colwill, after the England international suffered a devastating ACL injury. Colwill has since undergone successful surgery and begun his rehabilitation, but his absence leaves a huge gap in Enzo Maresca 's defensive options. Two weeks ago Lucy Bronze and Ona Batlle were flying into each other with tackles as the Lionesses beat Spain in the Euros. Now they're still close marking – but having a splashing time together on holiday in Formentera, the smallest Balearic isle. Wearing matching string brown bikinis, Chelsea right-back Lucy, 33, and Barcelona defender Ona, 26, tanned on a motorboat. Then they hopped on a paddleboard before going snorkelling, finally hosing each other down in the 31C Mediterranean heat. The pair, who played together for Barcelona in the 2023-24 season, are thought to have been enjoying the isle for several days. Last week Lucy shared images on Instagram of two iced coffees in a restaurant, tagging Ona, plus idyllic beaches and moped rides. She captioned the pictures 'And breathe'.
