Packers QB Jordan Love (thumb surgery) returns to practice on Monday
Less than a week after having surgery on his left thumb, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is back at practice, although he appears to be heavily limited on Monday. Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Love has his left thumb heavily taped, and backup Malik Willis was still handling the first-team reps at quarterback to start Monday's practice. Coach Matt LaFleur said Sunday he was hopeful Love — who had surgery to fix a ligament injury in his left thumb last Tuesday morning in Los Angeles — would practice in some capacity on Monday. The Packers are exercising caution and protecting the recovering thumb. Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Love isn't taking under center snaps or catching any direct shotgun snaps at practice. LaFleur said the Packers would encorporate some 7-on-7 periods to help acclimate Love to the practice setting without putting his left thumb in any danger. Love injured his non-throwing thumb while taking a sack on the final play of his preseason debut against the New York Jets on Saturday, Aug. 9. The Packers were confident Love's recovery from surgery would quick. Love is having no problems throwing the football to start practice. Packers signing 2024 fifth-round pick of Colts to help depth at safety
In need of depth with injuries mounting at safety, the Green Bay Packers are signing defensive back Jaylin Simpson on Monday, per Bill Huber of Simpson was a fifth-round pick (No. 164 overall) of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2024 draft. A versatile defensive back who played both safety and cornerback across five seasons at Auburn, Simpson started out at cornerback with the Colts but has crosstrained at safety at the NFL level. The Packers likely see him as a defensive back who can play both free safety and in the slot. Simpson (5-11, 179) has not appeared in a regular season game. He turned 25 years old in March. Simpson didn't make the 53-man roster after his first training camp but signed with the Colts practice squad to start the 2024 season. He remained there until the New York Jets signed him to the 53-man roster in December. Simpson was waived by the Jets with an injury designation on Aug. 2 after suffering a hamstring injury. The Packers are dealing with injuries to Xavier McKinney (calf), Zayne Anderson (knee) and now Omar Brown, who was hospitalized in Indianapolis after suffering a lung injury during Green Bay's preseason win at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday. At Auburn, Simpson played in 47 games and made 23 starts between the 2019 and 2023 seasons. He intercepted four passes, including one returned for a touchdown, during a first-team All-SEC season in 2023. While undersized at around 180 pounds, Simpson has excellent speed, explosiveness and all-around athleticism. The Packers also signed rookie defensive tackle Devonte O'Malley on Monday, so a few corresponding roster moves will be required. Cheese Curds, 8/18: Anthony Belton's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day
The Green Bay Packers had a rough go in the first half of Saturday's preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. Part of the issue on a general level was surely due to the Packers playing few of their established starters while the Colts kept a good complement of first-team players on the field early. But one player stood out in particular for his rough performance before halftime: rookie tackle Anthony Belton. Belton had a day to forget — or at least to learn from — on Saturday. Mental errors happened consistently, including one that took a would-be touchdown off the board in the second quarter. It was that much more frustrating to see Belton's rough day at right tackle when contrasted against Jordan Morgan, who looked very solid on the left side. Still, Belton was playing in just his second professional game, and if there is ever a time to get those mental errors out of the way and learn from them, it's in the preseason. He is vowing to 'grow up,' (his words) and ensure that another day like that does not happen again — something that the Packers need him to do, given their questionable depth on the offensive line.
