MADANI Communities must address 3R issues, tackle fake news
SANDAKAN: MADANI Communities must become communities that understand 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues and be capable of tackling slander and fake news related to the government.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said to realise this, MADANI Communities - multiracial volunteer bodies managed by the Information Department (Japen) - are reminded to verify information before spreading it publicly, and to play their role as proper delivery channels.
'Don't normalise, copy information and then spread without verifying beforehand. Spreading fake news can land you in prison, spreading untrue things can result in hefty fines, so we have to issue reminders.
'Tell the public not to be easily deceived by information they get, we want to spread what's true,' he said during the 2025 Sabah Zone Series 1 MADANI Community Retreat Programme Discussion Session here today.
Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Japen director-general Julina Johan, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Sabah Japen director Jainisah Mohd Noor also attended the session, along with about 500 participants from 109 MADANI Communities throughout Sabah.
Fahmi also reminded everyone to be careful with the newest tactics of using links that look like wedding invitations employed by scammers.
'There are individuals who sent links that seem to be their children's banquet invitation, but when I asked for the screenshot of the invitation, they asked me to click the link.
'I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to look for the individual, and they immediately deleted the link... so I advise everyone to please be cautious, scammers are very shrewd,' he added.

Govt to fast-track first national sepak takraw academy
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to expedite the establishment of Malaysia's first national sepak takraw academy, with completion targeted by the end of this year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision reflects the government's commitment to strengthening traditional sports and nurturing homegrown talent to compete at the highest levels. "We will make the sepak takraw academy a reality in this country. "I believe sepak takraw, like football, is a sport that makes us proud, not just nationally but also regionally and globally. "The academy can be completed before the end of this year because the Madani government is a government that works hard," he said in his speech at the launch of National Youth Day here today. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. Anwar said Yeoh had requested an allocation of RM6 million for the project, which would serve as a platform to develop young athletes and elevate the sport to greater heights. He also acknowledged the growing interest among Malaysian youth in both traditional and modern recreational activities, saying these pursuits should be supported as long as they remain within cultural values and norms. "This is part of our cultural heritage — from cities to kampungs (villages), from youth who dance for leisure to those who play futsal and football. "As long as it stays within the boundaries of proper conduct, we support it," he said. He said the unity government would continue prioritising youth empowerment through sports, the arts, and positive community engagement, in line with the Madani vision. Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM4 million to the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) to strengthen youth development. He said the decision followed a request by the council's president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid. "This is an increase of RM1 million from last year's allocation, which saw an additional RM3 million channelled to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Media council a milestone in press reform, says Syahredzan
Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan said the establishment of a media council fulfils a Pakatan Harapan manifesto promise made during the 15th general election. PETALING JAYA : Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has hailed the enforcement of the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025 as a landmark reform, saying it underscores the government's commitment to institutional change and press freedom. He said the Act, which came into force today, marks a shift from government intervention to a self-regulatory framework that empowers the media to manage itself more independently. 'Complaints, grievances, dissatisfaction and any issues related to media reporting will be managed and resolved through a dispute resolution mechanism that will be developed under this Act,' he said in a Facebook post. Syahredzan said the new legislation will also reduce reliance on legal action, such as civil suits or criminal charges, to settle media-related disputes. 'Legal actions under laws such as the Communications and Multimedia Act against media bodies and online practitioners should also be minimised,' he said. Earlier today, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the Act's enforcement today in conjunction with National Journalists Day (Hawana), and said the founding board of the media council had been finalised. The council will serve as an independent self-regulatory body that protects media freedom and ensures compliance with ethical journalism standards. Syahredzan, who is also the DAP national vice-chairman, said the Act fulfils a Pakatan Harapan manifesto promise made during the 15th general election under the 'Kita Boleh' campaign. However, he said, the government's reform agenda should not stop here. 'The government must also review laws that restrict media freedom, such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act, to ensure alignment with the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,' he said.
