Sunday Headlines: Houston beats Duke and Jaland Lowe Commits Edition

If you stayed up and watched the end of the Houston-Duke Final Four game, you were treated to the lovely sight of an all-time Duke collapse.
The Blue Devils led by 7 with 1:40 left in the game but fell apart down the stretch, and Houston advanced to tomorrow's championship game.

Duke controlled much of the second half and led by as many as 14, but made key mistakes down the stretch with turnovers and missed free throws to allow Houston to make the comeback.
It was an all-time collapse for the Blue Devils and now we get a really interesting matchup for the championship between Florida and Houston. Walter Clayton Jr. is quietly having an all-time great tournament run after scoring 34 in the win over Auburn, but Houston's defense is one of the best in the country.
In Kentucky Wildcats news, the Cats picked up another transfer portal commitment yesterday, as Pittsburgh point guard Jaland Lowe announced he plans to transfer to Kentucky.

The 6'3 point guard just finished his sophomore season at Pitt, where he averaged just under 17 points per game to go along with 4 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and almost 2 steals per game.
He was named All-ACC Third Team this past season.
As a freshman at Pittsburgh, Lowe took over starting duties midway through the season. During that stretch, Lowe shot around 40 percent from three. As a full-season starter in his sophomore season, that number dipped to under 27 percent.
Lowe's shooting percentage his freshman season, coupled with an expected increase in talent around him, a role that would expect a lower usage rate, and Lowe's good free-throw percentage (almost 88 percent over the last two seasons), and there's some optimism that Lowe could shoot the ball better than his sophomore season would indicate.

Lowe figures to be the starting point guard for the Wildcats next season, although incoming freshman point guard Acaden Lewis will compete for minutes as well.
Kentucky now has two portal commitments. Kentucky likely still will look for another wing and at least one more front court player — possibly 2.
The wheels of the transfer portal keep on turning...

Nick Chubb passes physical, signs one-year, $2.5 million contract with Texans
Veteran running back Nick Chubb officially has his new home in Houston. Chubb passed his physical and signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Texans, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Advertisement The deal gives Chubb the opportunity to earn another $2.5 million if he hits certain incentives. A 2018 second-round pick of the Browns, Chubb has played his entire career in Cleveland and was named to four consecutive Pro Bowls from 2019 to 2022. His career average of 5.1 yards per carry is among the best in NFL history. But in 2023 he suffered a severe knee injury in the second game of the season, he wasn't cleared to return until midway through the 2024 season, and wasn't the same player once he got back on the field. That's why it took him so long to sign, and why he had to sign a one-year prove-it deal. In Houston, Chubb joins a backfield that also includes starter Joe Mixon along with Dameon Pierce and rookie Woody Marks.

Spartanburgers' Jones earns SAL honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Minor League Baseball and the South Atlantic League have named Hub City Spartanburgers' outfielder Keith Jones II as South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the week of June 2–8. Jones is the first Hub City position player to win a SAL honor. 'Keith's consistency day in and day out has led him to where he is, and where he's going,' said Drew Sannes, Spartanburgers' hitting coach. 'There's been some small adjustments getting him back to who he knows he can be on a nightly basis, but the dedication to the work & process really sets him apart.' Jones bashed four doubles and three home runs last series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. All three long balls came over the final four games of the series. In total, his seven extra-base hits were the most of any High-A hitter. The New Mexico State product played in all six games of the series and smashed nine hits on the way to a .409 batting average and a 1.500 OPS for the week. 'It's exciting when he steps to the plate because you know there's going to be a quality at bat that could end up changing the outcome of any game,' said Sannes. 'We're excited to see where his continued work leads him moving forward over the next few months.' Hub City's outfielder, the Rangers' ninth round pick in 2024, is the first Spartanburgers field player to win a South Atlantic League award, but second 'Burger overall. Right-handed starter David Davalillo won Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 15-20 and was also awarded May Pitcher of the Month. The Spartanburgers welcome the Wilmington Blue Rocks to Fifth Third Park for six games beginning June 10. Jones and crew will grace the diamond at 6:35 p.m. ET Tuesday to begin the series.
