Alaska Airlines plans first Europe route, Seattle to Rome
Alaska Airlines will connect Seattle with Rome beginning next May. The service will be the first between Seattle and Rome, and Alaska's first route to Europe.
Alaska intends to serve the route four times per week with a three-cabin Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Dreamliners are currently part of the Hawaiian Airlines fleet only, but the company expects to receive a joint operating certificate prior to next May, which would allow those planes to be operated by Alaska Airlines.
A precise launch date has not yet been announced. Tickets are expected to go on sale at some point this fall.
Rome is the third long-haul route Alaska Air Group has announced from Seattle since revealing plans late last year to turn its Pacific Northwest base into a transoceanic hub. In total, Alaska Air Group plans to serve at least a dozen overseas destinations with widebody aircraft from Seattle by 2030.
Hawaiian Airlines service from Seattle to Tokyo began in May and Hawaiian flights from Seattle to Seoul will begin Sept. 12.

Mandarin Oriental to manage San Clemente Palace in Venice
Mandarin Oriental is taking over management of the San Clemente Palace Hotel in Venice. The property, located on a private, 12-acre island in the Venice lagoon, has undergone several reflags in recent years, previously operating as the St. Regis Venice San Clemente Palace and San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice. Mandarin Oriental said it will operate the seasonal property as the San Clemente Palace Venice through this November, when it will close for a comprehensive three-phase renovation. The hotel will reopen in April under the Mandarin Oriental brand. The revamped hotel will feature 136 rooms, four dining venues and a spa with multiple treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna and a steam bath. Other amenities will include an outdoor pool, courts for tennis and paddle sports and a yoga pavilion. The property will mark Mandarin Oriental's third in Italy, joining the luxury brand's Milan and Lake Como locations. The company has additional developments planned for Rome, Cortina and Porto Cervo.
