Primary school art competition to promote farm safety
Teagasc has launched the 'Stay Safe with Jessy' farm safety art competition and webinar, a new initiative aimed at promoting farm safety among children.
The competition is open to all primary school children across Ireland to create pieces of art that highlight the importance of safety practices in agriculture, and on Irish farms.
A live webinar will take place on Thursday, June 19, at 11:00am, with the winners of the art competition set to be named afterwards.
The 40-minute webinar, hosted by Alison Maloney of Teagasc, will be livestreamed from the Teagasc studio in Oak Park, Co. Carlow.
Maloney will be joined in studio by farm safety specialist in Teagasc, Francis Bligh, and Jessy the sheepdog.
The event will also be going live to St. Joseph's National School in Rathwire, Co. Westmeath, where Alma Jordan from Agrikids will be discussing farm safety with students in the school.
Art competition
There are three categories for prizes in the art competition, from which there will be an overall winner and a runner-up in each category.
These categories are junior and senior infants, first to third class, and fourth to sixth class.
The prizes up for grabs in the competition include a €100 voucher for Smyths Toys for each category winner, and an Agrikids farm safety workshop with Alma Jordan for their school during the 2025/2026 school year.
There will be three category runners up, who will each receive a Smyths Toys voucher to the value of €25.
Farm safety specialist in Teagasc, Francis Bligh said: 'Farms can be dangerous places, especially for children. Through this campaign we will be highlighting the main dangers and risks on farms, and how to avoid them, and stay safe.'
The closing date for the Teagasc art competition is 5:00pm on Friday, June 6.

Snow Patrol frontman to perform home city gig with a difference
Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody will perform one of his first major gigs as an author, in his home town this summer. The event discussing his new book, The Forest Is The Path, is expected to be one of the star attractions of this summer's Open House Festival in Bangor, Co Down. The annual festival includes almost 100 events throughout August and is expected to attract about 50,000 people to the city, with Bangor Castle Walled Garden and the Court House on the seafront as the focal venues. Lightbody will be talking to Irish author and broadcaster Sinéad Gleeson about his book The Forest Is The Path, which was published in March, in what has been billed as a "very different and incredibly personal hometown appearance", on 26 to 27 August. Among the other stars to appear at the Walled Garden are singers Lisa O'Neill and Mary Coughlan, folk duo Ye Vagabonds, and comedians Paddy Raff, Chris Kent and comedian Neil Delamere. Events at the Court House include The Ocelots, twin brothers from Wexford now based in Germany, and a special festival performance by Northern Ireland Opera. Among the other author events scheduled, former UK Labour cabinet member Alan Johnson will talk about his new book, Harold Wilson, Chris Whitaker will be discussing his international best-selling novel All The Colours Of The Dark, and American writer Karen Hao will be talking about her new book Empire Of AI. Open House director Kieran Gilmore said the festival puts a spotlight on Bangor's creative talent. "This year's festival has some of our finest local artists performing in iconic venues throughout the city," he said. "From an interview with Gary Lightbody about his new book, to a conversation between Declan Lawn, Bafta-winning writer of Blue Lights, and local author Colin Bateman, to an intimate launch of a new EP by King Cedar, we're bringing around 100 events across a whole range of art forms." The Open House summer season gets under way on Friday 4 July, with the annual Pickie to Pier swimming race, although the Seaside Revival Vintage Festival will not take place this year because of development work on the sea front. Two Irish singles are set to appear on the dating show An Irish rugby player has joined the cast of Love Island ahead of its return to TV next week. RTÉ announce new 'comedic crime drama' from Love/Hate creator
Tall Tales & Murder is set to premiere next year RTÉ have announced a brand new 'comedic crime drama' from the creator of Love/Hate Stuart Carolan. Tall Tales & Murder is a 12-episode series made in collaboration with BBC Northern Ireland and Screen Ireland. The show will have two six-part series. Filming for the new show began in Dublin this week, ahead of its premiere in 2026. News in 90 Seconds - 5th June 2025 Ella Lily Hyland, Aidan Gillen, Phillipa Dinne and Packy Lee are all set to start in the show, based on the Dublin Trilogy book series written by Caimh McDonnell. 'I've been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It - it's been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life,' Stuart Carolan, Writer and Executive Producer, said of his co-creator. Addison, who will direct and executive produce the show, said he was 'giddy with delight' to team up with Carolan. 'We've taken Caimh's wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama.'
