Heavyweights collide as U20 AFCON quarter-final line-up takes shape
The quarter-finals of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations promise a series of mouthwatering clashes as Africa's most promising young talents square off in four high-stakes encounters on Monday, 12 May.
The standout tie sees seven-time champions Nigeria face reigning title holders Senegal in Ismailia in a battle that could decide this year's favourite.
Nigeria topped Group B unbeaten but failed to convince in draws against Morocco and already-eliminated Kenya.
The Flying Eagles' campaign started brightly with a 1-0 win over Tunisia, but recent results have raised concerns over their cutting edge.
Senegal, meanwhile, needed a final-day 2-0 victory over DR Congo to seal qualification as Group C runners-up. After a shaky start—drawing with Central African Republic and falling 1-0 to Ghana—Serigne Saliou Dia's side rediscovered their form just in time.
They will now look to draw on the experience of 2023's title-winning run to overcome Nigeria's pedigree.
Elsewhere, Ghana, one of the tournament's most consistent sides so far, will face hosts Egypt in Suez. The Black Satellites are the only team to have won all three of their group matches without conceding a goal, including a statement 1-0 victory over Senegal.
Their opponents Egypt, however, have had a rocky road to the quarter-finals.
The U20 Pharaohs opened with a win against South Africa but were stunned 4-1 by debutants Sierra Leone.
Despite a goalless draw with Zambia and a narrow 1-0 win over Tanzania, they squeezed through as one of the best third-placed teams. Coach Mahmoud Gaber will hope the home advantage helps steady his inconsistent side.
Morocco remain one of the favourites for the title, having topped Group B unbeaten despite injuries to key players. After edging Kenya 3-2 and drawing 0-0 with Nigeria, the Atlas Cubs sealed top spot with a commanding 3-1 win over Tunisia.
They now face tournament surprise Sierra Leone, whose fairytale run has seen them defeat hosts Egypt 4-1 before narrowly advancing from a tough Group A.
Completing the quarter-final line-up is South Africa against DR Congo, a tie between two sides that impressed in flashes but struggled with consistency.
Amajita finished top of Group A despite drawing with Egypt and Zambia and suffering a 1-0 loss to the hosts. DR Congo's 3-1 win over CAR and opening draw with Ghana showed promise, but a 2-0 loss to Senegal exposed defensive vulnerabilities.
With the group stage complete and just eight teams remaining, the U20 AFCON enters its decisive phase. Will the favourites hold their nerve, or could a dark horse emerge to challenge for continental glory?

Morocco's unbeaten record faces Kenya's roaring home crowd in CHAN showdown
In a tournament that thrives on drama, history, and national pride, Sunday's clash between Morocco and co-hosts Kenya at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi promises all three in abundance. It's more than just a Group A fixture in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) — it's a collision between a seasoned continental force and a host nation riding a wave of home support. For Morocco, the equation is simple. Victory means one foot in the knockout stages. Head coach Tarik Sektioui is leaving no room for doubt. 'Our main objective is to get through the first round and that means a victory against Kenya,' he declared on the eve of the match. 'The match against the host country will be approached with the same will and determination to seek the three points of victory.' Sektioui knows the challenge well. Kenya's form — unbeaten after two games — makes them dangerous opponents, especially in front of their home crowd. 'Kenya has played well and the match against them will be difficult. We must give our all for 90 minutes on the pitch to achieve a positive result,' he added, underlining that every player in his squad 'has abilities and adds value to the team's performance.' Morocco's Momentum Meets Kenya's Rising Confidence This encounter marks Morocco's first-ever CHAN meeting with Kenya, but the Atlas Lions' record against East African sides offers confidence: unbeaten in five matches, with three wins and two draws. More tellingly, Morocco have a habit of silencing tournament hosts — 4-1 against Rwanda in 2016 and 4-0 over Cameroon in the 2020 semi-finals. Yet, Sektioui remains cautious, mindful of the dangers of overconfidence. His side had a week's rest after their opening 2-0 win over Angola — a blessing and a potential pitfall. 'It's a double-edged sword that you have to manage well to put in a good performance,' he admitted. From the players' perspective, the focus is crystal clear. Winger Oussama Lamlioui knows the atmosphere will be charged. 'The match will be difficult because we will play against the host country which will be more motivated by its public, but we have prepared well to start this match well,' he said. 'Preparations are going well and we are ready to make the difference against Kenya. We will give our all during this match and secure the three points of victory.' Kenya's Defiant Stand Under McCarthy Kenya arrive with confidence of their own. A 1-0 win over DR Congo and a hard-fought goalless draw with Angola have put them within touching distance of the quarter-finals. Austin Odhiambo has been the star man, scoring both of Kenya's goals and becoming the first Kenyan to net in consecutive matches in CAF senior competition. Head coach Benni McCarthy — who famously scored against Morocco in the 1998 AFCON — knows exactly what his players are up against. 'Morocco is a strong and well-organized team. It will be a tough match against one of the best teams not only in our group, but in the league,' he acknowledged. Fatigue could be a factor, with Kenya having played just two days earlier. 'Morocco has had a week to prepare for this match, as we played our last match only two days ago,' McCarthy said. 'I hope the motivation and physical condition will be there to play well in the match against Morocco.' For McCarthy, the challenge is also an opportunity. 'Several positive things have come out of our first two matches, such as resilience and strong character, and I hope that will show against Morocco. Morocco is unpredictable and that is why we must produce quality and be more organized in all areas of the game.' History Beckons Morocco's CHAN record speaks volumes: unbeaten in their last 14 matches (12 wins, 2 draws), with three consecutive clean sheets and just two defeats in 20 games. A second straight win here would mirror their flawless start in 2018 — the year they went on to lift the trophy. Kenya, meanwhile, are chasing their own piece of history. A win would make them only the third debutant in CHAN history to reach the knockout stages, and they would do it by toppling one of the tournament's giants. When the whistle blows on Sunday evening, it won't just be about three points. It will be about a host's courage, a champion's ambition, and the kind of football theatre that makes CHAN unforgettable.

Manzur Okwaro: From Kenya's U20 AFCON breakout to CHAN midfield general
At just 20, Manzur Okwaro is already proving he belongs among the continent's elite. After an eye-catching display at the recent TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egpyt in May, the versatile Kenyan defender made a bold leap into the senior team, where he is now turning heads at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024. But his transition to the big stage has been anything but ordinary. A natural left centre-back who occasionally features at left-back for Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) FC, Okwaro was thrust into a defensive midfield role. This is a position he had never played unitl Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy handed him the role in front of a roaring home crowd of over 40,000 fans against two-time CHAN winners DR Congo. Far from buckling under pressure, the youngster thrived in the unfamiliar role, showing tactical intelligence, composure, and fearlessness beyond his years. 'I initially considered playing him at left-back based on what I saw in our friendlies,' said McCarthy. 'But after analyzing his attributes, I felt he was a perfect fit in midfield. He's young, energetic, and brave—just what we needed to disrupt DR Congo's game plan.' Okwaro admitted he was taken aback when told about the positional shift, but embraced the challenge. 'At first, I was a bit shocked, but this is football. Getting time on the pitch is the most important thing. I was jittery at the start, but as the game progressed, I settled in really well,' he told McCarthy's decision proved spot on. Okwaro's tireless engine and anticipation allowed him to snuff out Congolese attacks, earning the coach's admiration. 'DR Congo wanted to build around their big No.9. I needed someone strong, quick, and clever to break that supply chain. Manzur did exactly that,' the coach added. It was McCarthy who spotted Okwaro during U-20 national team training, fast-tracking his debut in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gabon, where he impressed in a brief cameo. 'He's physically strong, very good technically, and plays with such fearlessness,' McCarthy noted. 'That's the kind of bravery we needed.' Okwaro's rise has been meteoric. From the football nursery of St. Anthony's Boys Kitale, to a spell at Rainbow FC, to eventually earning his break with KCB, where he walked straight into the first team after AFCON U-20. 'It's been a steady rise and I'm trusting the process. I'm growing with every game,' he reflected. 'The U-20 AFCON was key—it gave me my first taste of international football and taught me a lot.' His ambitions are now firmly set: breaking into Europe's top leagues and becoming a regular for the Harambee Stars. 'The trust coach McCarthy has in me pushes me to work harder. I don't want to let him down. It's a positive push,' Okwaro said. For the budding star, CHAN is more than a tournament—it's a springboard. 'CHAN is a massive opportunity—not just to showcase my talent to Africa and the world, but also to improve and compete at the highest level,' he said. 'My aim is to help the team win and make it to the final on home soil, while putting myself high up the visibility chain.'
