Penang livestock revenue hits RM1.906 billion with poultry leading growth
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that poultry and duck products, including meat and eggs, were the largest contributors, accounting for 91.75 per cent of the total NHT.
'The livestock industry remains a vital source of protein for the people of this state,' Chow said during his speech at the opening of the Penang Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen Day at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).
Interim results from the Penang Agricultural Census 2023 showed that the livestock sector contributed 44 per cent of the state's total agricultural sales, valued at RM3.514 billion.
Chow emphasised that the Livestock Enactment aims to modernise self-sustaining industries like poultry and pig farming, shifting them toward large-scale, technology-driven operations.
The event, held from Friday until today, was also attended by State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol.
Chow highlighted the adoption of closed-house farming to improve production quality and environmental sustainability while ensuring support for small-scale traditional livestock farming through the Livestock Industry Development Project.
Efforts to control zoonotic diseases remain a priority to safeguard public health and industry sustainability.
Chow added that Penang's agricultural strategy aligns with the National Agro-Food Policy (DAN 2.0) 2021-2025, focusing on food security.
The state is also developing strategic agricultural parks like Ara Kuda and Mayfield, which utilise advanced farming technology.
The federal government's Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) initiative further strengthens the rice industry through 12 key programmes aimed at boosting efficiency and resilience. – Bernama

US tariff cut benefits Malaysia SMEs, says Penang CM Chow
GEORGE TOWN: The tariff reduction for Malaysia, from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, is seen as a good step forward and comes as a positive achievement and a relief for many, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The chief minister said that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) might remain exposed in the new tariff environment, and hoped that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) would continue negotiating for better deals for these businesses. 'We hope MITI will continue negotiating better deals and prepare for the possible impact, especially on our small and medium industries (SMEs), who may be more exposed in this new environment,' he told reporters at the GBS By The Sea launching ceremony in Bayan Lepas here, today. Chow said that the current exemptions remained in place for now, but expects the situation to become clearer by the end of the year. He highlighted that Penang accounted for about 55 per cent of Malaysia's electrical and electronics (E&E) exports, highlighting the state's vital contribution to the national economy and reinforcing the urgency for strategic trade negotiations. It was reported earlier that the US would impose a reduced 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian imports, effective Aug 1, 2025. On July 7, Washington announced a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the US, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs, effective Aug 1 this year. This figure was one percentage point higher than the tariff rate announced in April. Meanwhile, on the Penang-Perak water project, Chow said negotiations with the Perak state authority would commence soon. 'We are working pretty well. Negotiations with Perak will begin very soon, followed by the implementation of the project. The target is by 2030 to 2031,' he said. Chow added that the additional water supply would be crucial for supporting the Penang Development Corporation (PDC)'s efforts to open new areas for industrial development. The chief minister also highlighted that Penang remained on a strong growth trajectory, driven by positive investment sentiment, including both new investments and expansions. 'We are currently focused on expanding our industrial parks. Recently, I announced that we have sufficient industrial land for the next five years. 'But sometimes, we may speak too soon. When one or two large investors come in with big land requirements, we have to work even harder to ensure the land is ready,' he said. - Bernama

NAFAS launches new Baja Super Peladang fertilizer design in Kota Kinabalu
KOTA KINABALU: The National Farmers' Organization (NAFAS) today introduced a new look variant product for one of its flagship products, Baja Super Peladang fertilizer, which now features a fresher, more modern, and professional design. Chairman of the Farmers' Organization Authority (LPP), Datuk Mahfuz Omar, said the new look from NAFAS' subsidiary, NAFAS Bajakimia Sdn Bhd (NBKSB), features a cleaner and more recognisable graphic design with a clearer information layout, making it easier for users to understand the fertilizer's function and content. 'Previously, Baja Peladang was only offered as a compound fertilizer. Now, in line with increasing market demand, NBKSB has taken the initiative to introduce a new variant in a compacted fertilizer form. 'The manufacturing technology for this compacted fertilizer is simpler and more efficient, yet it maintains the high nutrient content and effectiveness. At the same time, it allows the price to be more competitive in the market,' he said. He spoke to reporters after officiating the launch of the new Baja Super Peladang products and design at the National Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here today. He added that two other new variants, Super 45D and Super 16, use a SOP (Sulphate of Potash) base, making them suitable for crops that require control over chlorine content in their fertilization. 'This is part of our continuous effort to strengthen the Baja Super Peladang brand as a high-quality local product trusted by farmers nationwide. 'This new look also reflects NAFAS' commitment to improving the effectiveness of information delivery and product professionalism in line with current agricultural industry standards,' he said.
