Tyrann Mathieu, Derek Carr headline YouTube's Week 1 NFL broadcast team

It hasn't taken long for Tyrann Mathieu to find a new gig in the media after announcing his retirement. The former New Orleans Saints safety is working as a studio analyst for YouTube, which is broadcasting this year's season-opening Friday night game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 5. Back in Los Angeles, YouTube will be featuring Mathieu among several other retired NFL players as studio analysts on the pregame show an hour before kickoff, which has a surprising number of connections to the black and gold. One of the studio analysts will be recently-retired quarterback Derek Carr. The two former Saints captains will be joined by longtime Saints rival Cam Newton, wide receiver Brandon Marshall (who spent a month on their roster after Dez Bryant's injury in 2018), with noted Saints fan Kay Adams hosting the panel alongside YouTube fantasy football analyst Peter Overzet. The pregame show will be broadcast on the NFL's official YouTube page. So we'll be tuning in to see what they all have to say. A number of former Saints players are busy working in the media these days, ranging from Roman Harper and Benjamin Watson (on the SEC Network) to Mark Ingram II and Jonathan Vilma (on Fox Sports) and Drew Brees (who will call a game for Netflix in this year's three-game Christmas Day slate), among others.

Khalen Saunders traded from Saints to Jaguars on same day he played Jaguars for Saints

Player for player trades are rare in the NFL these day. But the players having gone against one another on the same day? Even if it was a preseason Week 2 tie, that still has to be like seeing a bald eagle. The New Orleans Saints sent defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Jacksonville Jaguars for center Luke Fortner on Sunday, Aug. 17, after the two teams tied at 17. Saunders and Fortner still managed to end the day as enemies despite switching teams. Saunders won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to starting 27 of 30 possible games over the last two seasons for the Saints. He started for the Saints on Sunday. Fortner entered for the Jaguars as a backup. Saunders had one of the most notable moments in prime time during the 2024 season. During the Saints' Week 5 loss to the Chiefs, Saunders picked off Patrick Mahomes while dropping into coverage in the end zone late in the third quarter. Saunders, listed at 325 pounds, rumbled 37 yards up the field before being brought down. Coincidentally enough, his brother, Kameron Saunders, was a backup dancer for Taylor Swift on the "Eras Tour." Khalen Saunders was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in 2019 and spent his first four seasons of his career with the team. During the offseason, the Saints bolstered the defensive line by trading for Davon Godchaux and signing Jonathan Bullard. Fortner is a fourth-year guard from the University of Kentucky who lost his starting spot last season and is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Saints, Jags swap linemen hours after they played each other

The New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars are swapping a pair of linemen just hours after they played each other Sunday, league sources confirmed to The Athletic. Offensive lineman Luke Fortner will head to New Orleans in the deal, while defensive tackle Khalen Saunders will go to Jacksonville. The teams played to a 17-17 tie earlier in the day in New Orleans. The Saints are acquiring Jaguars OL Luke Fortner in exchange for DT Khalen Saunders, per sources. He started all 17 regular-season games in each of his first two seasons with the franchise, but was relegated to a backup role last season. Saunders, 29, was a third-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 out of Western Illinois. Interestingly, Saunders might be the second-most famous person in his family, as his older brother, Kameron, gained notoriety as a backup dancer during Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour.' Saints Player Khalen Saunders Teams up With Dancing Brother Kameron Saunders For LGBTQ-Friendly Football Camp — TODAY (@TODAYshow) June 30, 2025 The younger Saunders was primarily a backup in his four seasons in Kansas City, earning Super Bowl rings in 2019 and 2022. He signed with the Saints as a free agent in the spring of 2023 and started 27 games for New Orleans over the next two seasons. In 68 career appearances, Saunders has tallied 181 tackles, 6.5 sacks and an interception. Sunday's linemen swap was the second NFL trade of the day. Earlier Sunday, the Houston Texans sent receiver John Metchie III and a sixth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for tight end Harrison Bryant and a fifth-rounder.
