PETALING JAYA: The men's doubles squad have already secured a spot in the Macau Open final, even though the tournament is only at the quarter-final stage.
In Friday's (Aug 1) action at the Macau East Asian Games Dome, Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian continued their impressive run by stunning second seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty with a thrilling 21-14, 13-21, 22-20 win in a gripping 60-minute battle.
They will take on fellow Malaysians Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King, who defeated seniors Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong 21-12, 21-16 in another quarter-final tie.
The all-Malaysian semi-final promises to be an intriguing clash, especially as Haikal and Arif were once partners for five years and even reached the top of the world junior rankings before going their separate ways in 2023.
However, it was the end of the road for Choi Sol-gyu-Goh V Shem after they fell to Indonesia's Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza Isfahani in straight games, losing 18-21, 13-21.
Earlier in the men's singles, Malaysia's sole representative Justin Hoh pulled off a surprise by defeating 2019 World Championships bronze medallist Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 21-9, 21-18 in just 37 minutes.
Justin will face India's Tharun Mannepalli in the semi-finals on Saturday.
There was more joy in the mixed doubles camp as both Malaysian pairs secured impressive wins to reach the last four.
Top seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei made short work of Indonesia's Adnan Maulana-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, winning 21-17, 22-20, while teammates Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing pulled off an upset by beating second seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi 21-12, 17-21, 21-18.
In the semi-finals, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will take on Denmark's Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje, while Jimmy-Pei Jing will go up against Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi-Nita Marwah.

Zulfahmi waits with bated breath as SIC 'shifts priorities'

KUALA LUMPUR: Zulfahmi Khairuddin is waiting anxiously for Sepang International Circuit (SIC) to make a final decision on whether Hakim Danish Ramli will race on a Moto3 wildcard at the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia (Oct 24-26). The ZK Racing boss said discussions with them have been positive but stressed that ultimately, the decision lies in SIC's hands. ZK Racing has run SIC's two-wheeled motorsports talent development programme on behalf of them in recent seasons. "I have discussed this with SIC last week and they are also looking to make this wildcard programme (with Danish) a reality," said Zulfahmi recently. "But they (SIC) have yet to make a solid decision so I cannot make the announcement yet. They have indicated that they are willing to bear the costs but it has to be discussed among their directors first." Zulfahmi, however, admitted that he does have some concerns as he claims SIC's priorities have now shifted away from talent development. "I believe that talent development remains a factor but is no longer a priority for SIC as it was previously. This is because they also have to focus on other areas. It (talent development) is no longer very important to them," added Zulfahmi. "Nevertheless, as the person assigned to the task (talent development), I will continue to give my best. "I hope a decision will be made soon so we can adequately prepare Danish to compete at the Malaysian GP. I know what it feels like to go to a race without testing on a uncompetitive bike." Malaysian riders are often given wildcards to race in the Malaysian GP to help boost local fans turnout during the race weekend. Danish is currently Malaysia's top young talent. He is leading the prestigious Red Bull Rookies Cup competition with only two rounds remaining this season. SIC has played an important role in developing Malaysian talent in both two and four-wheeled motorsports over the past two decades. Zulfahmi, a former Moto2 and Moto3 rider, himself had also benefitted from SIC's talent development programme during his racing years. Adam Norrodin and Syarifuddin Azman are two World Championship riders SIC has helped produce in recent years while Danish, 18, is expected to make the step up to the Moto3 class next year.

Izzah geared up for new national record

KUALA LUMPUR: A bigger and stronger Izzah Izzati Asri is on course to set a new national record when she competes at the World Track Cycling Championships in Santiago, Chile on Oct 22-26. National track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri said Izzah has gained considerable muscle mass in recent months and is able to push a bigger racing gear now. Harnizam is thus confident the 21-year-old will further lower her personal best over 200 metres, a key indicator of how strong a track sprinter is. "Yes that (new national record), is what she is aiming for," said Harnizam recently. "Izzah completed her hypertrophy phase a few weeks ago and has gained a couple of kilos of muscle. "She is 55 kilogrammes now which is what we had planned for her this season. We will look to increase her weight by a few more kg closer to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "The race gear she had been using previously feels too light for her now, which is a good sign. "We recently moved her up to a bigger race gear which she could use for the World Championships. It, however, depends on how well she can adapt to the new gear. "She is using it now in training as we work on her power and pace." Izzah is the current national record holder in the women's flying 200m time trial. She set the current national mark of 10.578s at the UCI Nations Cup in Konya, Turkiye in March. The Kedahan is expected to compete in the women's individual sprint, keirin and 1km time trial at the world meet in Chile. Izzah is also the national record holder in the 1km time trial (1:06.229s) which she set at the Asian Championships in Nilai in February.
