Gov. Youngkin calls for investigation into ‘repeated failures' of Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney after alleged attempted child abduction
At around 11:45 a.m. on July 18, officers responded to the Fair Oaks Mall for a reported abduction. There, police learned that a young girl was near an indoor play area when a man picked her up and walked away with her, making it all the way to the second floor of the shopping center before the girl's parents intervened and got her back uninjured, according to officials.

The suspect, who police identified as 26-year-old Andres Caceres Jaldin, reportedly fled before officers arrived. Investigators discovered that he was staying at Extended Stay in Chantilly, and had stolen a car from a nearby auto body repair shop earlier that morning, according to police.
Authorities arrested Caceres Jaldin at his hotel room that afternoon.
Now, Youngkin is calling on Miyares to open an investigation into Descano, alleging that Caceres Jaldin is a 'repeat offender' who was released from Fairfax County jail just three days before the incident.
'There is a shocking and unforgivable pattern in Fairfax County of releasing criminals back onto Virginia's streets instead of keeping them behind bars,' Youngkin wrote, in part, in a post on the X platform Friday night. 'The Commonwealth's Attorney cares more about protecting criminals than about keeping children safe.'
Following Youngkin's post, Miyares also , saying his office 'will examine the facts and report to the people of Fairfax why CA Descano's refusal to prosecute criminals has been allowed to endanger the public.'
According to court records obtained by DC News Now, Caceres Jaldin was released on his own recognizance on July 15 in connection with a hit and run that took place on July 2. 'Release on one's own recognizance' is to allow a person who has been charged with a crime to be released from custody based on their promised to return to court and follow certain guidelines while awaiting trial.
Court records also show that Caceres Jaldin had previous arrests for various offenses including destruction of property, assault and battery on a family member and malicious wounding; however, these charges were formally dropped by prosecution.
DC News Now reached out to Descano's office for comment but has not yet heard back.

Drinker jailed for 15 years after killing his frail 81-year-old grandfather
A drinker who killed his frail and vulnerable grandfather before he assaulted two victims at a working men's club has been jailed for 15 years. Warwick Crown Court heard well-known Jaguar restoration expert John Brown, aged 81, died six days after being attacked in his home by 33-year-old Jakob Walpole on the night of November 23 last year. Jurors found Walpole, of School Road, Bulkington, Warwickshire, guilty of manslaughter, breaching a restraining order and two counts of assault, but cleared him of murder after a three-week trial. Walpole was handed the custodial sentence on Monday with a further two years on extended licence. The defendant sat in the dock at Warwick Crown Court wearing a grey tracksuit with his head down while Judge Kristina Montgomery KC sentenced him and said: '(Mr Brown) was an exceptionally small man in deteriorating physical health who had been diagnosed with dementia. 'Your visits (to Mr Brown's home) were made to exploit his love… by taking money from both your grandparents to fund your lifestyle. You were an intimidating and persistent nuisance in their lives.' The court heard that on the night Walpole attacked his grandfather, Mr Brown 'stood up to' the defendant who was asking for money, before the elderly man was struck to the head. Walpole repeatedly said 'shut up' from the dock while his mother Lynda Brown read a victim impact statement to the court. Ms Brown said: 'The tears we have shed could fill buckets and I live with the knowledge my son caused the death of my beloved father. 'Even though he's been in prison, we are still in fear. Mum is terrified he will be back knocking at the door or her bedroom window. 'She lives in this fear constantly and we fear the day he's released again.' Mr Brown was well known in the local community, having run a successful car panel and body repair business thanks to his expertise in respect of vintage cars. Opening the Crown's case last month, prosecutor Michael Duck KC said Walpole had been 'drinking throughout the day' and committed two assaults at Bulkington Working Men's Club around an hour after attacking his grandfather. Walpole bought a small bottle of vodka from a shop in Bulkington at about 9am, before attending a match at Coventry City's home stadium in the afternoon. After attacking his grandfather, Walpole smashed a pint glass over the back of a club member's head in an incident caught on the 'clearest possible' CCTV footage, before assaulting a bar worker while he was being physically removed from the club. Mr Brown's daughter installed security cameras at her parents' home in St James Gardens, Bulkington, because of Walpole's 'deteriorating' behaviour, and the pensioner was recorded in a 'haunting' video gesturing for help towards the camera before the attack. The prosecutor said at the beginning of the defendant's trial: 'The reality is that on the 23rd of November, in drink, Jakob Walpole descended to a tirade of violence.'

Ring stolen and staff member 'punched' in robbery at high street jewellers
A ring was stolen and a member of staff was 'punched' during a robbery at an Isle of Wight town centre jewellers. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to Sandown Jewellers, on Sandown High Street, at around 3.20pm yesterday (Sunday, August 3). Police said a man and a woman entered the shop. While the woman distracted a member of staff, the man stole a ring. The man was confronted by the staff member and proceeded to punch him, before leaving the scene, officers said. A spokesperson for the force said: "Anyone with information about this incident should call 101 quoting reference 44250348319."

Police investigating overnight shooting near the Jack Stack Pool in Brighton Heights
Pittsburgh Police are investigating an overnight shooting that happened near the Jack Stack Pool in the city's Brighton Heights neighborhood. Police say officers from Zone 1 were called to the area of Brighton Woods Road just before 1:15 a.m. on Monday after receiving two ShotSpotter alerts that totaled 27 rounds. When officers arrived in the area, they found multiple shell casings and found a vehicle with gun on the floorboard. Police say that vehicles was towed from the scene of the shooting. Police say a man was dropped off at a nearby hospital a short time later with a graze wound to the head. He was last said to be in stable condition. KDKA's news crew at the scene witnessed the Mobile Crime Unit from the police bureau working to process evidence related to the shooting. Police say the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
