Mateta can propel Palace towards Conference League qualification
'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times'; who knew Charles Dickens was going full Nostradamus and predicting Crystal Palace's summer of 2025 when he wrote the opening line to his brilliant novel A Tale of Two Cities? Set in London and Paris amid the blood and guts of the French Revolution, the book written in 1859 is the predecessor to the equally epic Great Expectations – a title which also summed up life at Selhurst Park until this week. It's been an astonishing few months for the South London club, winning the FA Cup final thanks to the winner from England star Eberechi Eze, returning to Wembley and beating Liverpool on penalties to lift the Community Shield, then commencing their new Premier League campaign with a 0-0 draw at Club World Cup champions Chelsea. What a season it could be for Oliver Glasner's side! Unfortunately, that brief window of success may already be closing with the imminent sale of at least two critical components to their recent triumphs. Eze is on the verge joining Tottenham after a verbal agreement was reached on a deal totalling £60million, centre-half Marc Guehi is moving closer to joining Liverpool for around £38m and Adam Wharton, one of the best midfielders in the business, could also be sold with Manchester United and Real Madrid linked with the 21-year-old in recent days. Palace, demoted from the Europa League after breaching dual ownership rules, begin their Thursday night quest to win the Conference League with a two-legged play-off tie against Norwegian club Fredrikstad. If they are still at Palace then Eze, Guehi and Wharton are all likely to play in the match which will be bittersweet for the Holmesdale End ultras who must reluctantly accept the need for their club to make the utmost profit from the sale of their best players before their contracts expire, while trusting in their ability to sign more than adequate replacements. Arch-rivals Brighton have perfected the art of having ready-made players to fill the boots of departed superstars and Palace can follow suit by recruiting the likes of £30m Leicester attacker Bilal El Khannouss and Rennes' talented young central defender Jeremy Jacquet. Meanwhile, BetMGM and Unibet offer evens there are more than 3.5 goals in the Eagles' first venture into European football and, even if Eze plays, Jean-Philippe Mateta is our tip to open the scoring at 3/1 with bet365. He is 8/13 with the same outlet to score at any time. Mateta, who hit the first goal against Liverpool at Wembley and scored 22 times in all competitions last season, is set to sign a new contract so maybe the worst of times won't be quite as bad as first feared. Millwall, West Brom, Leyton Orient, Bradford and Grimsby can all be stuck in Football League single, multiple and accumulator bets on Saturday. Bockos Diamond went unbeaten in the Irish Greyhound Derby at the end of last year and returns to Shelbourne Park on Friday night to begin his battle to retain his crown. More Trending Trained by former Portsmouth and Hove handler Graham Holland, this summer's English Derby finalist glides round the Dublin track and holds huge appeal at 6/1 with Bresbet to win the £107,000 first prize in next month's final. Proper Heiress returned to his brilliant best when cruising to Sussex Cup success at Hove at the start of the month and is 28/1 with Bresbet, while our other each-way tickles are English Derby plate winner and former Towcester track record holder Lennies Desire at 25/1 with the same firm and English Derby finalist Sole Mio at 33/1 with sponsors BoyleSports. Kai Havertz suffers fresh injury blow as Arsenal launch emergency transfer plan
Kai Havertz came off the bench in Arsenal's opening day win over Manchester United, but is now set for a spell on the sidelines with the Gunners poised to return to the transfer market Kai Havertz is set to be out of action for Arsenal after picking up a fresh injury. Havertz spent a long period of last season on the sidelines with a serious hamstring injury. He has since recovered and made a substitute appearance in the weekend's slender victory against Manchester United. But Havertz is now facing another period of absence. According to The Athletic, the German has picked up an issue with his knee and did not take part in an open training session hosted at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. Assessments are reportedly at an early stage and it is unclear over how long Havertz could be out for. His absence - as well as Gabriel Jesus' current injury woes - means that summer signing Viktor Gyokeres is the club's only fit striker. He endured a quiet debut at Old Trafford on Sunday. The latest blow has caused Arsenal to launch an emergency transfer plan. The Gunners are now keen to add another forward to bolster their attacking ranks as they look to finally land the Premier League title. Gyokeres, a £64million signing from Sporting, underwhelmed on his competitive Gunners debut, with Arteta admitting there was room for improvement when it came to pressing from the front. He said: 'Well he did a lot of things very good. You can tell especially in our high press and rhythm that we demand, that especially in the first half we were giving a bit too much time. It is something that we have to work on him, especially there." They have been linked with Real Madrid star Rodrygo, who was left out of Real Madrid's La Liga opener vs Osasuna. Xabi Alonso moved to play down those rumours however, claiming his omission was purely tactical. Speaking about his future, Real boss Alonso said: 'These are match decisions. The way the match was going, we needed another profile. There have been no decisions for the future. 'Nothing is going on. The Club World Cup was a different context because of the competition it was. Today it's just one game, we can leave the rest behind. 'What counts is this season and of course I'm counting on Rodrygo. It's just one game, we shouldn't read too far into the future. 'If he gets those minutes in three months' time, I'll be able to answer you with more certainty. Today it was just the circumstances of the game and my decisions.' Arsenal were also linked with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze this summer, but he appears to be closing in on a move to North London rivals Tottenham instead. Arteta is currently preparing his side for their first Premier League home game of the season. After beating United, the North London side welcome newly-promoted Leeds to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

West Ham vs Chelsea: Latest team news, predicted lineups and injuries
Chelsea make the trip across the capital to take on West Ham United on Friday night. The Blues got their Premier League campaign up and running at home to Crystal Palace last Sunday, lucky to escape with a draw after Eberechi Eze's thunderbolt free kick was ruled out. Chelsea looked flat in front of their home fans, using six attacking players signed for a combined £250million but were unable to pick their way through. Enzo Maresca was without Tosin Adarabioyo that afternoon after he picked up a knock in training. With Levi Colwill expected to miss most of the season and Jorrel Hato and Wesley Fofana among the substitutes, youngster Josh Acheampong was drafted in to partner Trevoh Chalobah at the back. Tosin is expected to return to training this week but it remains to be seen whether he will be fit enough to start against the Hammers. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. After keeping a clean sheet against Palace, the partnership of Chalobah and Acheampong could remain in place. Maresca has indicated Fofana will be eased back into action in the coming weeks but the defender's decision to remove all traces of the club from his Instagram account raised eyebrows this week. And in startling comments last week, the Chelsea head coach suggested new arrival Hato is not an ideal option at centre-half. Elsewhere, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens were handed starts last time out with Liam Delap and Estevao Wilian brought on in the second-half. Both subs were guilty of missing big chances against Palace with Maresca already facing some big decisions in attack. West Ham meanwhile are reeling from an opening day defeat to Sunderland, thrashed 3-0 by the Black Cats on Wearside. Maresca certainly has options in attack which could be further bolstered with the arrivals of Xavi Simons ands Alejandro Garnacho before the month is out. More Trending Despite his side drawing a blank against Palace, Pedro and Gittens could be given the nod again. With options limited at the back, he could opt for the same starting XI. West Ham vs Chelsea kicks off on Friday 22 August with kick-off scheduled for 8pm. You can watch the match live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event with streaming also available through the Sky Go app and NOW TV for subscribers.
