Indonesia palm oil group GAPKI urges government to delay levy hike
JAKARTA, May 16 (Reuters) - The Indonesia Palm Oil Association, GAPKI, on Friday urged the government to delay a planned hike in the palm oil export levy warning it could harm competitiveness amid global trade uncertainties due to the U.S. tariffs and geopolitical tension.
Indonesia is due to raise its palm oil export levy to between 4.75% and 10% from May 17 to help fund a biodiesel blending mandate as well as a palm oil replanting programme. The levy currently stands at 3% to 7.5%.
"The situation is full of uncertainties and it is a big risk to launch a policy that will impact competitiveness of Indonesia's palm oil exports," GAPKI said in a letter addressed to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
Indonesia, the world's biggest palm oil producer, is facing proposed U.S. tariffs of 32%, while number two producer Malaysia faces a 24% rate. The tariffs have been put on hold until July.
"It is feared that this will make Indonesian palm oil exports increasingly uncompetitive compared to Malaysia, especially for the U.S. market which is currently dominated by Indonesia," the group said.
Malaysia charges an export duty of between 3% and 10%, depending on the price of palm oil. For May, the duty has been set at 10%.
Sri Mulyani Indrawati said previously that Indonesia would adjust its crude palm oil export tax to reduce the burden on exporters from U.S. tariffs. The tax is separate to the levy.
Meanwhile, heightened tension between major palm oil buyers India and Pakistan has sparked concern about reduced demand, GAPKI said.
"There is no permanent ceasefire between India and Pakistan yet that had caused buyers from both nations to delay purchase of crude palm oil and its derivatives," the group added.
The finance ministry and coordinating ministry of economics did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

Philippines offers Indian nationals visa-free travel to boost tourism
MANILA, June 7 (Reuters) - The Philippines said on Saturday that Indian nationals will be allowed to enter the country without a visa for tourism purposes beginning June 8. The visa-free arrangement is aimed at boosting tourism arrivals from India, which rose 12% in 2024 to nearly 80,000, according to data from the Department of Tourism. Despite the growth, Indian arrivals to the Philippines remain a small portion of the over five million who travelled to Southeast Asia last year. Under the visa-free policy, Indian nationals can enter the Philippines without a visa for up to 14 days. Those holding valid visas or residence permits from the United States, Australia, Canada, Schengen countries, Singapore, or the United Kingdom can stay in the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days.

Indonesia expects to conclude free trade talks with EU by end of June
JAKARTA, June 7 (Reuters) - Indonesia said on Saturday that free trade negotiations with the European Union, which have been going on for nine years, are expected to finish by the end of June. Airlangga Hartarto, the chief economic minister for Southeast Asia's biggest economy, met with EU Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic in Brussels on Friday. "Indonesia and the European Union have agreed to conclude outstanding issues and we are ready to announce a conclusion of substantial negotiations by the end of June 2025," Airlangga Hartarto said in a statement. He did not disclose details about what agreements may have been reached. Representatives for the EU in Jakarta did not respond to a request for comment. The EU is Indonesia's fifth biggest trade partner, with total trade between the two reaching $30.1 billion last year. Indonesia had a $4.5 billion trade surplus, Airlangga said. Indonesia and the EU have previously disagreed on the EU's trade rules for products with potential links to deforestation which could affect Indonesian palm oil, as well as Jakarta's ban on exports of raw minerals. Indonesian officials have been motivated to accelerate talks on free trade agreements, keen to diversify the country's export destinations as they deal with U.S. tariff challenges. Seeking to end U.S. trade deficits worldwide, U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping "reciprocal" tariffs that have since been paused until July. Indonesia is facing a 32% tariff rate.
