Court records reveal that between October and December 2023, Patel participated in a fraudulent operation targeting elderly individuals. The perpetrators, operating from overseas call centres, falsely presented themselves as US treasury department officials. They deceived victims by either claiming there were arrest warrants that required payment for clearance or persuading them to hand over money and gold for safekeeping, US attorney office said in a statement.
In his role as a money mule, Patel travelled from New Jersey to collect money and gold from elderly victims across the eastern United States, including the Middle District of Florida. During the sentencing, one victim testified that the scam had forced him to sell his house due to inability to pay his mortgage, leaving him entirely dependent on Social Security benefits.
In December 2023, law enforcement officials apprehended Patel in Hillsborough County whilst under surveillance as he attempted to collect what he believed was a box of gold.
His total involvement in the scheme resulted in laundering $1,791,301. Patel pleaded guilty on December 23, 2024.
"Preying on vulnerable, unsuspecting elderly victims to rob them of their hard-earned money is despicable. Even worse, the defendant's co-conspirators posed as government agents to defraud victims of nearly $2 million, threatening them with arrest if they didn't follow their demands. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida for their diligent work," said US secret service special agent in charge Robert Engel of the Tampa field office.
The investigation was conducted jointly by the United States Secret Service, Pasco Sheriff's Office, and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, with Assistant United States Attorneys Jennifer . Peresie and Maria Guzman handling the prosecution.

Assam will stop issuing Aadhaar to adults, says Himanta, citing ‘saturation' and ‘Bangladeshis'
The Assam Cabinet on Thursday decided that it will stop issuing Aadhaar cards to adults in the state, except for members of the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and tea garden communities, who will be given a window of another year. This decision was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following the cabinet meeting in the afternoon. He said that this decision has been taken in light of the state achieving Aadhaar saturation and as a 'safeguard' against illegal immigrants accessing the document. Sarma said that Assam has 103% Aadhaar saturation, but that this is at 96% among the SC, ST and tea garden communities. 'We have taken this decision because, particularly in the last year, we are continuously apprehending Bangladeshis entering the country at the border. Yesterday, too, we pushed back seven of them. But we are not sure if we have been able to catch all of them. So we want to create a protection so that no one can enter Assam illegally and take an Aadhaar and live as Indian citizens. We want to completely close that door,' he said. He said this will become operational from October 1, and that members of SC, ST and tea garden communities will have an additional window for a year to apply for and receive Aadhaar cards. Once this window is closed, he said, Aadhaar cards will only be issued to people aged over 18 years in 'rarest of rare cases', and will only be issued by Deputy Commissioners after seeking reports from the district police and Foreigners' Tribunals. 'If someone is left behind for whatever reason even after one year, they will have to apply to the relevant DC, and the DC will consult all stakeholders, like the Superintendent of Police, Foreigners Tribunal and will be able to give it in the rarest of rare cases,' he said. Last month, following another cabinet meeting, Sarma had said that the cabinet was discussing a policy for new Aadhaar cards for adults in the state to be issued only by Deputy Commissioners. This, he said, was to prevent 'infiltrators' from availing the document. The existing process is that applications are made at Aadhaar centres, and a verification is done at the district level by ADCs or Circle Officers to check whether the applicant resides in the particular district.

Bombay HC allows Turkish firm Celebi to withdraw plea against revocation of security clearances
The Bombay High Court on Thursday allowed a subsidiary of Turkey-headquartered airport ground handling services major Celebi to withdraw its writ plea seeking suspension and annulment of the security clearance cancellation by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. The Bombay HC had earlier deferred the hearing, awaiting a verdict on an identical plea before the Delhi HC that had dismissed Celebi's plea last month. On July 7, the Delhi HC dismissed a writ petition by another Celebi subsidiary seeking suspension and annulment of the security clearance cancellation. The BCAS, amidst the backlash over Turkey's support for Pakistan in the India-Pakistan conflict, had, in May, revoked with immediate effect the security clearance of the Indian arm of Celebi, citing 'national security' reasons. The revocation led to airports in India, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, where the Celebi group operated, terminating their contracts with the group companies, prompting the subsidiaries to approach the courts. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) had terminated the contract of Celebi's subsidiary — Celebi Nas Airport Services India, which operated at the airport. The Bombay HC Division Bench of Justices Burgess P Colabawalla and Firdosh P Pooniwalla has heard the writ plea by Celebi Nas against the revocation of security clearances. On Thursday, senior advocate Chetan Kapadia for Celebi Nas sought the court's leave to withdraw the said petition 'without prejudice to its rights and contention in law,' which the court accepted. Meanwhile, a Single Judge Bench of Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan of Bombay HC had last month, referring to the Delhi HC verdict, vacated the interim protection granted to Celebi Nas, which had restrained the MIAL from taking a final decision on tenders to replace the company's subsidiary until further orders.

Bangladeshi intruders entered Meghalaya via damaged fencing: State panel report
A government-appointed panel confirmed on Thursday that the August 9 Bangladeshi intrusion in Meghalaya's South West Khasi Hills happened after border fencing collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Khonjoy village. Villagers pointed out the weak stretches at Maheshkhola through which intruders walked in. (Meghalaya Tourism site) Chief minister Conrad K Sangma and his deputy Prestone Tynsong had directed a three member team, Himalaya M. Shangpliang, government advisor; Marthon J. Sangma, Mendipathar MLA; and Kitborlang Nongrem, vice chairman of the Border Area Development Committee, to probe the incident. After visiting the Khonjoy B, Rongdangai, and Maheshkhola villages, the team said locals were living in fear of recurring cross-border threats. 'People told us that collapsed fencing has created easy entry points. Despite the presence of security forces, these gaps are putting lives at risk,' Marthon J Sangma said. Shangpliang added that women and children living in those areas remain vulnerable. 'Villagers clearly pointed out the weak stretches at Maheshkhola through which intruders walked in. This situation cannot be allowed to continue,' he said. 'We will place our findings before the chief minister and deputy CM without delay,' Shangpliang said. The team's visit followed petitions from border residents demanding urgent repairs and round-the-clock security presence. The August 9 attack took place in Khonjoy village under the Nongjri–Nonghyllam sector near the Bangladesh border. According to the South West Khasi Hills District (SWKH) police, a group of about nine Bangladeshi nationals — armed with weapons including a firearm — crossed into Indian territory illegally under the cover of darkness. The victim, Balsrang A Marak, was assaulted and stabbed, possibly for trying to block their movement. The gang fled soon after but did not immediately return to Bangladesh. According to Press Information Bureau (PIB) data, the total length of Indo-Bangladesh Border in Meghalaya is 443 km, out of which 367.155 km length of International border has been covered by fence.
