10 years of Serendipity: The arts festival hosts a mini edition in Birmingham

Mint25-05-2025
At the Bradshaw Hall—Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, you can see black-and-white photographs of Ustad Zakir Hussain lining the exhibition space. These hail from Dayanita Singh's Zakir Hussain Maquette and form a tribute to the late maestro, who passed away last year. This show also looks at the artist's early engagement with the form of the book and the ways in which she extended it to a handmade maquette 1986 onwards. The exhibition features exquisite candid images of Hussain alongside enlarged pages of handwritten interviews. The Zakir Hussain Maquette is part of a micro edition being organised by the Serendipity Arts Festival in the city of Birmingham, UK, till 26 May. This showcase kickstarts the 10-year anniversary celebration of the interdisciplinary festival, which will unfold across ten cities globally in the course of the year.
At Birmingham, music seems to form the core of the micro edition with exhibitions, talks, performances and film screenings offering a nuanced understanding of different forms and styles such as the fado, Jazz from both India and Americas, folk music, ghazals and Hindi film music. Especially interesting is a showcase of Portuguese-Goan music by Zubin Balaporia and Nadia Rebelo, and Thumri in the Chamber, a reimagined presentation of the classical Indian vocal form. 'It invites audiences to experience thumri not only as a musical form, but as a cultural prism—one through which diverse artistic, historical, and social dimensions are refracted and revealed, offering a fresh and immersive perspective on one of Hindustani music's most cherished traditions,' states the curatorial note. This is being reflected through discussions and artistic interventions across the festival. There is also a pop-up library on the history of Indian instruments curated by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Hussain's genius is being celebrated not just through Singh's photographs but through film and interactions as well. According to Smriti Rajgarhia, director, Serendipity Arts Foundation and Festival, Remembering Zakir Hussain is a two-part tribute to the maestro. It includes a special screening of the film, The Speaking Hand, followed by a conversation between director Sumantra Ghosal and Dharmesh Rajput of Birmingham City University, which is the partner for the mini edition. The film traces the rise from the bylanes of Mumbai to global fame. The tribute also includes participatory workshops like the Art of Taal, presenting a confluence of drum and tabla, and Scoring to Picture that delves into the art of composing music for a film. Pop-up exhibitions around the history of Indian music instruments
One wonders about the choice of Birmingham to start the milestone celebrations for the festival. According to Rajgarhia, the city represented a confluence of vibrant communities, a dynamic public culture, and a thriving creative ecosystem. 'Birmingham is bustling with annual festivals of jazz, comedy, poetry, film, and literature. It is also home to a notable artistic legacy — from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Royal Shakespeare Company and iconic cultural venues like the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Symphony Hall, to the region's great galleries like the Barber Institute, the Ikon Gallery, and the New Art Gallery Walsall,' she elaborates. Further, the city has come into the pop culture spotlight with shows like Peaky Blinders. This ever-evolving creative landscape made it conducive to host the first mini edition of Serendipity Arts Festival there. She feels that Birmingham, with its large South Asian diasporic community, provides a blueprint for experimentation with the idea of taking the arts across borders.
For years now, the annual Serendipity Arts Festival, held across Panjim, has been rooted in the architecture and culture of the city. With every city having its own cultural fabric, how does the team plan to replicate that element going forward this year? 'Now that we kickstart with SAF's Mini Edition in Birmingham, we hope that the community here will respond to a living tapestry of art, music, and cultural narratives that bridge the East to the West,' says Rajgarhia. 'As in Goa, where we activate public spaces with our Festival, in Birmingham too we have iconic venues like the Symphony Hall and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to encourage the public's engagement with art.'

Kajol was once asked to remove clothes in front of everyone by her cousin brother, Ajay Devgn was also there, the film is... In Hindi films, intense family dramas are a common theme. From sibling rivalries to placing loved ones in distressing situations, the narratives are often build up to heighten the drama. Yet, these on-screen moments can be challenging especially when the actors involved share a close bond off-screen, making the performances more intense. One such moment occurred in 1995 in the action film Gundaraj , when Kajol and Mohnish Bahl portrayed characters entangled in a harrowing plot twist. How is Kajol related to Mohnish Bahl? Kajol, known for her captivating screen presence and versatile performances, comes from a renowned film family. Her mother, Tanuja, was a prolific actress, whereas her father, Shomu Mukherjee was a producer-director. Her cousin- Mohnish Bahl, often seen portraying impactful roles, is son of legendary actress Nutan and Rajneesh Bahl. Kajol's most challenging on-screen moment In 1995, action film Gundaraj released, in which Mohnish Bahl portrayed antagonist opposite Ajay Devgan and Kajol. The climax of the film featured a disturbing sequence in which Bahl's character, after holding Ajay Devgn's character hostage, forces Kajol's character to take off her clothes in public. While intended to intensify the dramatic tension, the scene was quite difficult for the actors, especially as Kajol and Mohnish are related off-screen. Despite such an intense scene, they both handled the moment with utmost professionalism, keeping personal relationship separate from artistic demands. Interestingly, Ajay Devgn who was playing lead in the film, later become Kajol's husband in 1999, further strengthening familial bond between the co-stars. Gundaraj marks the only film where, Kajol, Mohnish Bahl, and Ajay Devgan collaborated. After that, the trio didn't star in any further projects.

Mahavatar Narsimha Box Office Collection Day 19: Ashwin Kumar's movie inches closer to ₹180 crore domestically

Mahavatar Narsimha Box Office Collection Day 19: Animated mythological epic Mahavatar Narsimha, released on July 25, is all set to hit the ₹ 180 crore mark at the domestic box office. The Ashwin Kumar directorial, which saw a rather dud opening at the box office, has witnessed a spectacular growth in three weeks, setting new benchmarks for Indian animation. The Sandalwood film, portraying powerful tales of Lord Vishnu's third and fourth avatars, has emerged as the highest-grossing Indian animated movie. Hombale Films co-founder, Chaluve Gowda, in an interview with Hindustan Times, said, 'When we get this kind of reception, it proves that Indian films have an audience. And even for Disney movies, the artists are all Indians.' 'Yes, we had the resources. The technology was there, but someone just had to take that risk and prove that in India, Indian animation movies will also work,' he added. Mahavatar Narsimha was released in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam in 2D and 3D formats. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Mahavatar Narsimha hit a slowdown as it entered its third work week, from a 77.66% fall in earnings on Monday, to minting just ₹ 1.92 crore on Tuesday. However, Mahavatar Narsimha's 19-day total stands at an impressive ₹ 176.83 crore, which is very near to the ₹ 180 crore milestone. If the movie is able to maintain its momentum, it will likely reach the milestone by tomorrow, Wednesday. Notably, Mahavatar Narsimha's Tuesday earnings are only an early estimate. The number will be revised after taking the evening and night shows in account. Mahavatar Narsimha has also done wonders at the global box office. The Kannada movie did a worldwide business of ₹ 221.25 crore gross in 18 days, grossing ₹ 13.1 crore from the overseas market. Mahavatar Narsimha's India gross stands at ₹ 208.15 crore. Chaluve Gowda told LiveMint that the second instalment of the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe will likely be released by 2027. 'The next chapter will certainly come faster. Ashwin Kumar is already deep in development, and I can assure fans that Chapter Two will be coming within two years,' he said.

Pinkvilla Predicts: Opening day Hindi net box office collections for War 2, Coolie, Param Sundari, Baaghi 4, Jolly LLB 3 and more

The Hindi box office is set for an exhilarating lineup of films in 2025 that features high-octane action, romantic comedies, and gripping courtroom dramas. At Pinkvilla, we're analysing the buzz of the films and predicting the opening day India net Hindi collections for some of the most anticipated releases. Below, we analyze the opening day potential of War 2, Param Sundari, Coolie, Jolly LLB 3, Baaghi 4, Dhurandhar, and The Raja Saab, arranged in order of their release dates. The Day 1 India Net Hindi Prediction For Upcoming Indian Movies Is As Under 1. War 2: Rs 35.00 Crore to Rs 37.00 Crore (Release Date: August 14, 2025) War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is the sixth installment in the YRF Spy Universe and a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War. Starring Hrithik Roshan as Major Kabir, alongside Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, the film promises explosive action and a gripping narrative. The original War took a record start of over Rs 50 crore, but considering a non-holiday release, and a box office clash with Coolie, we predict a robust opening of Rs 35.00 crore to Rs 37.00 crore in Hindi. Hrithik's star power, Jr NTR's pan-India appeal, and YRF's premium format release should drive strong footfalls in urban centers. 2. Coolie: Rs 6.00 Crore to Rs 7.00 Crore (Release Date: August 14, 2025) Rajinikanth's Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is a Tamil action-drama with a Hindi dubbed version aiming to capture the superstar's North Indian fanbase. Featuring Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir and Upendra in supporting roles, the film is set for a high-profile clash with War 2. While Rajinikanth's star power is immense, his recent Hindi dubbed films like Jailer and Vettaiyan have not been able to make their presence amply felt. But things are very different for Coolie, which is showing some excellent advance booking signs. We predict a Hindi opening of Rs 6.00 crore to Rs 7.00 crore net. On an all-India level, Coolie has taken a very comfortable lead over its release rival. 3. Param Sundari: Rs 10.00 Crore to Rs 11.00 Crore (Release Date: August 29, 2025) Param Sundari is a romantic comedy directed by Tushar Jalota and produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films. It stars Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor. Set against Kerala's scenic backwaters, the film promises laughter, chaos, and a cross-cultural love story. With strong urban appeal and a potential hit music album, we predict an opening of Rs 10.00 crore to Rs 11.00 crore net. 4. Baaghi 4: Rs 8.00 Crore (Release Date: September 5, 2025) Tiger Shroff's Baaghi series continues with Baaghi 4, an action-packed entertainer produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The franchise used to have a loyal fanbase, but the same can't be said now. The mixed reception to the first teaser is slightly alarming but the movie still seems to have things going for it, to ensure Tiger Shroff's biggest solo opener post-pandemic. Pinkvilla predicts an opening day of Rs 8.00 crore net as things stand. 5. Jolly LLB 3: Rs 20.00 Crore to Rs 22.00 Crore (Release Date: September 19, 2025) The Jolly LLB franchise returns with Subhash Kapoor's third installment, featuring Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi in a hilarious courtroom showdown. Jolly LLB 2 opened at around Rs 12 crore in 2017, and based on the exceptional first promo, we expect Jolly LLB 3 to open at Rs 20.00 crore to Rs 22.00 crore net. Its blend of satire and relatability will drive footfalls across urban and single-screen theaters. 6. Dhurandhar: Rs 21.50 Crore to Rs 22.50 Crore (Release Date: December 5, 2025) Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh and Sanjay Dutt among many other loved actors, is a high octane espionage thriller. The movie clashes with The Raja Saab and Shahid Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj's untitled next. We estimate an opening of Rs 21.50 crore to Rs 22.50 crore net, making it the most preferred movie option of December 5. 7. The Raja Saab: Rs 10.00 Crore to Rs 12.00 Crore (Release Date: December 5, 2025) Prabhas ' The Raja Saab, directed by Maruthi, is a romantic-action-horror film with a Hindi dubbed version, banking on Prabhas' familiarity among Hindi movie audiences. Co-starring Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan and Sanjay Dutt, the film looks to take a modest Rs 10.00 crore to Rs 12.00 crore net start. It will most likely be the second most preferred Hindi movie option for the day it releases on. The Opening Day India Net Hindi Prediction For The Abovementioned Movies Is As Under Release dates (2025) Movies Day 1 Prediction: India Net August 14 War 2 Rs 35.00 crore to Rs 37.00 crore August 14 Coolie Rs 6 crore to Rs 7 crore August 29 Param Sundari Rs 10.00 to Rs 11.00 crore September 5 Baaghi 4 Rs 8.00 crore September 19 Jolly LLB 3 Rs 20.00 to Rs 22.00 crore December 5 The RajaSaab Rs 10.00 crore to Rs 12.00 crore December 5 Dhurandhar Rs 21.50 crore to Rs 22.50 crore Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more such stories.
