Is the Bezos, Sánchez wedding about love or money? That's the wrong question.

USA Today7 hours ago

Spoiler alert: Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding seems to be the opposite of what happens in the new movie 'Materialists.'
This column contains spoilers for the movie "Materialists."
As Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and one of the richest people in the world, marries Lauren Sánchez in Venice, Italy, in late June at a purported cost of more than $20 million, I keep thinking about the old debate over marrying for love or money.
In Disney movies, fairy tales and romantic comedies like the newly released "Materialists," storytellers peddle a common plot: Desirable woman is faced with a poor suitor and a rich suitor. Oh no! Whom should she choose?
Since I divorced years ago, I've dated a lot. Even in our era of sexual equality, choosing between love or money still seems tricky. But is it really?
Bezos and Sánchez: 'Materialists' come to life − almost
It's hard to talk about the Bezos-Sánchez wedding without mentioning wealth. Bezos, 61, enjoys an estimated net worth of $263.8 billion. After he divorced MacKenzie Scott − they were married for 25 years − Bezos began publicly dating Sánchez in 2019.
The divorce settlement made Scott one of the wealthiest women in the world. This time around, Bezos, according to Fortune magazine, has insisted on an ironclad prenuptial agreement with Sánchez, 55.
I have no idea whether Sánchez, a former TV journalist who has released her first children's book, is marrying for love or money. And I hope all of the parties involved find and enjoy lifelong love.
After I saw "Materialists" on the eve of Bezos' glamorous nuptials, though, I pondered the dilemma portrayed in the movie − whether to pick the rich handsome guy or the less-well-to-do handsome guy.
Audiences have taken to social media to complain about the film's bizarre ending. As a mom of daughters, I didn't care for it, either.
Throughout the movie, New York City matchmaker Lucy (played by Dakota Johnson) vows to marry a wealthy, established "unicorn." Despite reconnecting with her angry, immature ex-boyfriend John (played by Chris Evans), whom she had dated for five years, she begins seeing Harry (played by Pedro Pascal), a potential client who falls in love with her.
It turns out that Harry is everything Lucy says she wants and everything John is not: wealthy, kind and intelligent. Harry isn't as wealthy as Bezos, but he owns an expensive penthouse in Manhattan and has a driver. He's that coveted unicorn.
Yet Lucy doesn't choose Harry, and she makes that decision in a traumatic moment. Lucy had set up a female client with a potential suitor who appeared perfect, but she later finds out that the client was sexually assaulted on the date Lucy arranged.
Lucy feels guilty and begins to question her clients' dating preferences, including those involving income.
I rolled my eyes when the film ended with Lucy returning to John, a 37-year-old wannabe actor who lives in a dilapidated apartment with roommates. John has little to offer her, but Lucy chooses him because he's poor and that seems to be noble.
The Bezos-Sánchez wedding, meanwhile, seems to be the opposite of "Materialists." He has enough money to make all of her dreams come true. Yet, she may still love him for who he is, not what he's worth.
Is it OK to marry for love and money?
I was surprised to see a modern rom-com try to flip the script on love and money, but fail spectacularly. The movie had such an opportunity to promote a teachable moment for men and women who are looking for love.
Like many women, Lucy longs for an equal partner who could provide financial security, even though she also works. She doesn't try to say she could do it on her own, which in this era of "girl power" feminism is brave. As a single mom, I've also experienced those feelings while dating.
A 2022 Life Happens survey found that financial security is one of the top three most attractive traits in a partner, along with a sense of humor and intelligence. Women, especially, desire the security that money can bring.
It's not about being a "gold digger."
I have learned while dating that a steady income suggests other positive characteristics about a person. Those include being disciplined, responsible and having a strong work ethic.
Like Lucy, I've been on dozens of first dates in recent years. I've met a lot of great men − good, hardworking and kind men like Harry do exist. When a woman finds someone like that, she must love herself enough to trust and love him.
Women can reject toxicity and choose someone who is emotionally healthy and good. That is the kind of empowering message that Hollywood should be offering women.

What to know about the next James Bond movie now that Denis Villeneuve will direct it

In the 50-plus years of James Bond, the wait between films has never gone longer than six years. The next entry, and first since Daniel Craig's dramatic exit, may test that — but things are speeding up. On Wednesday, Amazon MGM Studio announced that Denis Villeneuve will direct the 26th Bond movie, putting the franchise in the hands of one of the most respected big-budget filmmakers. Here's what to know about that decision, and where things stand for 007. From 'Dune' to Bond Villeneuve, the 57-year-old French Canadian director, edged out other filmmakers who were reportedly eyed for the gig, including Edward Berger ('Conclave') and Paul King ('Paddington 2'). Since emerging with 2010's 'Incendies,' Villeneuve has established himself as a steward of cinematic IP ('Blade Runner 2049,' 'Dune') and a specialist in dark, doom-laden spectacle ('Sicaro,' 'Arrival'). 'James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers,' said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. The culmination for Villeneuve has been the 'Dune' films. His first two entries have surpassed $1 billion in box office and gathered a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning seven. Villeneuve is expected to begin shooting the third 'Dune' film this summer, with a cast including Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Zendaya and Javier Bardem. 'I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory,' said Villeneuve. 'I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.' What's the timetable? Amazon, which bought MGM Studios in 2022 for $8.5 billion, hasn't set a release date yet or announced a screenwriter. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are shepherding the movie for the first time. In February, Amazon MGM Studios secured creative control of the franchise from Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, whose family has presided over Bond since the first film, 1962's 'Dr. No.' The most likely timing would be production starting in 2026 and the film being released sometime in 2027. Who's in the mix? No new 007 has been named, but that hasn't stopped rumors and conjecture from running rampant. It's pure speculation buts oddsmakers have a few expected contenders for the martini-sipping role. Those include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Aaron Pierre, Henry Cavill, James Norton and Jack Lowden. Expectations are that the new Bond will remain male and British, but producers have said nothing publicly to tip their hand. Whoever it is will have big shoes to fill. In his five-film, 15-year stretch in the tuxedo, Daniel Craig was widely seen as one of the best Bonds, including the high point of 'Skyfall' (2012) and the swan song of 'No Time to Die' (2021). New corporate overloads with something to prove Since Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli obtained the movie rights to Ian Fleming's books, James Bond has been a family business. That didn't change after Amazon bought MGM, but it did earlier this year when Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli agreed to let the studio take creative control. That handoff stoked concern from many Bond fans that 007 would be picked apart for spinoffs, series and the kind of intellectual property strip mining Hollywood has been known for in other franchises like 'Star Wars.' So far, though, Amazon MGM has made no announcement about any spinoffs, and is prioritizing the 26th Bond movie.

Who Will Play Denis Villeneuve's James Bond? Here Are The Top Choices

Aaron Pierre in Rebel Ridge It was announced on Wednesday that directing legend Denis Villeneuve would be the first James Bond director under the new Amazon reign, diving into the lore of the legendary secret agent some time after his next Dune movie. Or his third Dune movie? Or one of the other projects he's supposedly working on? The timeline is a bit unclear here. Villeneuve is a surprising choice for the spot, albeit he has effectively never made a bad film, and any franchise would be lucky to have him. It is somewhat notable that fellow directing icon Christopher Nolan has repeatedly talked about doing a Bond movie, but it's now gone to Villeneuve here (not that Nolan isn't insanely busy). The reveal of Villeneuve as director did not come with an announcement about who would be cast as James Bond, post-Daniel Craig, with not even a sense of if he's doing a younger or older Bond. But we have had a decade of rumors about who would be taking up the role, and I thought I'd go through the choices that came up most often. I do not believe they'll be doing the once-pitched concept of a woman James Bond, so I'm not listing potential actresses for that idea here. Rather, the guys are: Idris Elba - It feels like the suave, storied actor has been the top theoretical choice since I was in high school, though even he says the moment may have passed, as the actor is 52 now and this would just be the beginning of his Bond career. But I'm not sure I buy that, as Daniel Craig is now 57 and no one was complaining about that. LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 16: Idris Elba attends the global premiere of Paramount+ series "Knuckles" ... Whitby/Getty Images for Paramount+) Henry Cavill - You are not going to find anyone else on this list that looks more like the quintessential Bond, interesting because Cavill also looked like the quintessential Superman. Cavill is wrapped up in some big projects however, like a giant Warhammer concept with Amazon he's passionate about. But he's expressed interest in the role. MADRID, SPAIN - DECEMBER 09: British actor Henry Cavill attends "The Witcher" season 2 premiere at ... More Kinepolis Cinema on December 9, 2021 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Juanfor Netflix) Aaron Taylor-Johnson - He's had back-to-back hits in the form of Nosferatu and now 28 Years Later (we'll ignore Kraven for the moment). He's recently been brought up as a possible choice for the part. I could see it. LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 14: Aaron Taylor-Johnson attends the 'Nocturnal Animals' Headline Gala ... The Gentleman and White Lotus actor is young and a rising star and I absolutely think he's got the right kind of look and charisma to reinvent the role yet again. (Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic) Taron Egerton - He's been rumored for Wolverine and now rumored for James Bond after his breakout role in The Kingsman, but more recently starring in one of the most popular Netflix movies in history, Carry-On. (Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/FilmMagic) Richard Madden - The ex-Game of Thrones star is another younger choice who looks the part, but his last turn in a big spy role in Amazon's Citadel did not go great. I don't think he's the one. LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 27: Richard Madden attends the "Eternals" UK Premiere at the BFI IMAX ... More Waterloo on October 27, 2021 in London, England. (Photo by Tim P. But I'm not even sure he'd want it? NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 01: Robert Pattinson attends "The Batman" World Premiere on March 01, ... More 2022 in New York City. (Photo by) Aaron Pierre - He's easily the most recent, prominent rumor about who's being considered for Bond. You just have to watch Rebel Ridge on Netflix to know he's got the charisma (and he is actualy English). He's currently the DCU's Green Lantern as well, landing that part a month after Rebel Ridge. This would be the ultimate rising star moment for him. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 03: Aaron Pierre attends the Los Angeles Special Screening of ... Sure, but these are the biggest names that have been considered over the years. Will Villeneuve go for any of them, or surprise us with an outside-the-box pick? Denis Villeneuve to direct the next 'James Bond' movie

Oscar-nominated Denis Villeneuve will direct the next "James Bond" film, Amazon's MGM Studios said on Wednesday, taking charge of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic spies and longest-running movie series. Villeneuve, the Canadian film director and writer, has earned critical acclaim for films such as "Sicario," "Dune," "Dune: Part Two," "Blade Runner 2049," and "Arrival". He was nominated for Best Director at the 2017 Oscars for sci-fi film "Arrival", which starred Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Dune", based on author Frank Herbert's highly acclaimed 1965 novel of the same name, at the 2022 Oscars. "I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility," Villeneuve said in a statement. The upcoming Bond movie will be the first under Amazon's MGM Studios, which took creative control of the film franchise under a new joint venture with longtime rights holders Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli earlier this year. The franchise is yet to name a new lead actor following Daniel Craig's departure after "No Time to Die" in 2021, which earned nearly $800 million in global box office collections. Inspired by Ian Fleming's novels, the Bond franchise has spanned over 60 years, grossing more than $7 billion at the global box office, making it one of the most successful ever. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the next Bond movie.
